Fantasy World Cup: A Lot Of Final Changes!

Posted by Jan Kocbach, 29 Sep 2009@5:00

Helena Janssons disqualification due to running into a forbidden area at the Sprint race in the World Cup Final cost the leading team of manager Anders Skarholt and the Scary Team a lot of World Cup points – but so did it for a majority of the other top teams – including manager Kristoffer Fiane Pedersen and the Bushmen Team who has been fighting with Skarholt for the overall victory all the way. Thus Janssons disqualification did not have any impact on the overall results in the World of O Fantasy World Cup.

[Note! Results are still unofficial as they are not fully checked - please report any errors to jan@kocbach.net]

In the end the Bushmen Team proved to be the strongest: The Scary Team lost valuable points to the Bushmen team in both of the last competitions – and thus the Bushmen Team took the victory with a total of 5224.50 points ahead of the Dæhlie Team with 5137.20 points and the Scary Team with 5135.50 points.

Congratulations to the Bushmen Team for taking the victory in the first WoO Fantasy World Cup!

Tight World Cup Final coming up – Fantasy WC also

Posted by Jan Kocbach, 24 Sep 2009@8:00

wcl
Daniel Hubmann and Minna Kauppi are in the lead – but Kauppi is not starting. It is tight in the top ahead of the World Cup finals in Switzerland this year, so it looks like we are going to get a real fight for the win in both the mens and womens classes in this years overall World Cup. In the Fantasy World Cup it is also tight in the top – with at least all the top 10 teams having a chance to take the final victory in the 2009 Fantasy World Cup.

As the last years, the World Cup finals are organized at the Postfinance Sprint in Switzerland. This year the venue is in Zürich – and startlists will be available here.

World Cup Top 15 ahead of finals – Men

top15men
See full World Cup standings men here

In the mens class Daniel Hubmann has 380 points – a 15 points lead ahead of Thierry Gueorgiou. Thus the two big profiles in the orienteering world are again ready for a fight. The question is if the terrain is technical enough for Gueorgiou.

Peter Öberg – the man of the spring – with 304 points is also in the fight for the overall World Cup victory in the in the mens class, whereas it will be difficult for the others to fight for the overall victory.

The overall World Cup points are calculated as the 5 best points from the 7 first competitions added to the World Cup points from the two races in the finals. Note that the number of points are doubled in the last race, i.e. 200 points for the winner.

World Cup Top 15 ahead of finals – Women

top15women
See full World Cup standings women here

In the womens class, Minna Kauppi has the lead 20 points ahead of Marianne Andersen. Kauppi is however not starting due to a foot injury, and thus Andersen is the favorite ahead of the finals. Behind Andersen, Helena Jansson (55 points down from Andersen) and Simone Niggli (70 points dows for Andersen) are the rivals for the overall World Cup victory. Anne Margrethe Hausken with 202 points has probably only theoretical chances to take the overall World Cup victory, but with two victories she will be at 502 points…

Special rules for World Cup finals

The World Cup finals consists of two races.

  • Day one: Middle distance, individual interval start. There is no prior qualification. The 40 runners with the highest World Cup standings start last in reverse order (leader starts last) – the rest of field start earlier and their start order is determined by the reverse standing of the World Rankings as at the beginning of 1st September 2009. The start interval is 2 minutes.
  • Day two: Sprint, individual time trial. The competition consists of one Final only, with 40
competitors. These 40 competitors are the 40 highest placed competitors in the World Cup
Standings (5 out of first 7 plus score from competition 8) out of those entered for competition
    9. The start order is reverse World Cup current standings (leader starts last). The start
    interval is 1 minute.

Maps and GPS Tracking from Norwegian Champs Middle

Posted by Jan Kocbach, 12 Sep 2009@16:00

mistakes_nmmellom
Anne Margrethe Hausken and Damien Renard had spectacular mistakes running to the wrong controls – making it extra interesting for the viewers to follow the GPS tracking from todays Norwegian Champs middle distance. Both were very much in the fight for the medals when they did bit mistakes. In the end Marianne Andersen and Anders Skarholt took the gold medals after very good races – and excitement all the way to the finish. Replay the action – and see the challenges the runners met below.

Championships weekend: NM Middle, SM Middle, SPM …

Posted by Jan Kocbach, 12 Sep 2009@12:00

control7_newFrom 14:20 CET today live GPS tracking is offered from the Norwegian Champs Middle distance (first start is 13:00 CET for the elite). For the Swedish Champs Middle there is live speaker sound with Per Forsberg (start elite from 12:00 CET) and live results.

For the Swiss Champs Sprint (start elite from 17:45 CET) and the German Champs Relay (start 13:00 CET) there does not seem to be any live results, but results will probably be posted quite soon on the organizers webpages.

Tomorrow there is then Norwegian and Swedish Champs relay, Swiss Champs Long and Belgian Champs Long and more (see links below). There are probably more national championships going on this weekend as well – please post info and link as a comment below if you know about any – or if you know about live results / tracking of any of the above.

Webroute + GPS-track: Norwegian Champs Long

control7_new
[Updated with GPS tracking video] There were some interesting long legs in todays Norwegian Champs Long. Draw your choice first – and take a look at what the best did at the GPS Tracking afterwards. Above you see the most problematic control for the women in todays long distance – control number 7.

GPS Tracking video

The below video shows GPS tracking for a few selected legs in the mens race using the mass-start mode, i.e. you can see who is fastest on each route. It is especially interesting to see the leg to the 10th control where going right seems very fast until Wingstedt gets stuck in the last steep hill.
