Road to WOC: Japan (with maps)

Posted by Jan Kocbach, 27 Jul 2010@5:00

The terrain from the Japan WOC selection races – held in Japan in April – does not at all look like the terrain the Japanese runners will meet in Trondheim in August. It is, however, not easy to find terrain in Japan which has much resemblance with the Trondheim marshes… Still, the runners met interesting orienteering technical challenges, and a fair team selection was held.

Thanks a lot to Koji Kashimada (chairman of the Japan Orienteering Federation) and Shunta Miyagishima (O-news.net) for information about the Japanese road to WOC.

Maps from selection races

Three selection races were held over two weekends in April in Japan:

A comment by the course planner from www.o-news.net:

- I was impressed by the winning time for the ME course. I expected around 72 minutes. It was good to see a young runner (Teragauchi) beating all the favourites. The main feature of both the ME and WE courses was the long leg. On the day before the race kyoukaiinkai leader Kashimada-san test ran the course. He was worried that wide route to the right was too obvious ( we both agreed this was probably the fastest route) and most runners would choose that way. But actually many runners went straight and (especially the women) and Yagishita’s time shows that the straight route was not necessarily slower.
Selection Criteria

The chairman of the Japan Orienteering Federation, Koji Kashimada, explains the following about the rules for the WOC selection for Japan:

  • We choose the fastest runner in each races automatically.
  • We choose second fastest runner in each races, if his time is within +7% of fastest runner, and already in national team.
  • A few more runners were selected by Foot-O committee recommendation

- We had training almost every weekend from April to July. Especially we had concentrate on technical training in Fuji area, where famous intricate volcano formed terrain.

Road to WOC: Russia (with maps)

Posted by Jan Kocbach, 21 Jul 2010@5:00

The Russian WOC selection process is quite different from what you see in many of the other top orienteering countries in the world. The selection races were held in Priozersk near Sankt-Petersburg July 2nd-July 6th a few weeks ago (see map from the long distance above), but 3 of 6 men were selected already ahead of the selection races. Thanks a lot to Mikhail Vinogradov for providing me with the information.

The Russian National team members have only had one training camp in Trondheim – in the beginning of May 2010. Several athletes from the Russian National team were in a training camp in Trondheim from May 2nd until May 8th (Tsvetkov Dima, Novikov Leonid, Novikov Valya, Khramov Andrey, Sitdikova Alia, Nuberg Ira, Vinogradova Julya Novikova Julya and Vinogradova Galya).

- Unfortunately the Russians athletes had only one training camp in Norway because there are no financing from the government for such training camps. This training camp was financing mostly by Scandinavian clubs or from personal incomes, Mikhail Vinogradov explains.

Still, the Russians count to the favorites in most disciplines in Trondheim – especially among the men where Andrey Khramov has now taken a gold medal in each of the last 5 World Championships. Can he take his 6th in a row? Also, Valentin Novikov is the middle distance champion from Bulgaria earlier this year. It would be a surprise if Russia would leave Trondheim without medals – but can they manage a Gold medal?

Maps from the selection races

The selection races consisted of one sprint, one long distance and one middle distance – all eld in Priozersk near Sankt-Petersburg July 2nd-July 6th (Russia Cup competition). Although there are many marshes in the terrain, it is quite different from what the athletes will meet in Trondheim this August. Here are the maps from the selection races:

The sprint was a forest sprint only without qualification race, because in the last moment the local authorities said that they were not allowed to organize a city sprint in the museum area.

Selection criteria and selections

These are the principles of selection of athletes to the World Championships 2010:

  1. Only 6 women and 6 men would be included to WOC team.
  2. Andrey Khramov is a current WOC-champion in sprint. He was included to WOC team without selection.
  3. Athletes from 1-6 places in EOC-2010 in individual races would be included to WOC team (in fact, Valentin Novikov – middle distance EOC-champion and Alexey Bortnik 5 place in middle distance).
  4. Winners and silver medal winners from Russian selection races would be included next (See below).
  5. One athlete may be included to WOC team on decision from Russian Orienteering Federation – without selection.
  6. The rest of the athletes would be included to the WOC delegation if there sum of points from the two best selection races would be the maximum. The calculation formula is: Points from one race = (2 – Time of athlete/Time of winner).

Road to WOC: Czech Republic (with maps)

Posted by Jan Kocbach, 16 Jul 2010@5:00

The Czech trainer Radek Novotny has gotten impressive results out of his team the last years – can they continue the same way in the Nordic terrain in Trondheim? The Czech Team had their selection races in parallel with the Nordic Orienteering Tour – skipping the NORT altogether in order to prepare as well as possible for the World Orienteering Champs in August this year.

Devoted people do their best preparations

Czech Republic has outsiders in nearly all disciplines in the World Championships this year – although the Nordic terrain does not fit the Czech runners as well as terrain in which the last international championships have been held. Dana Brozkova has won a gold medal in the World Champs the two last years – on home ground in 2008 on the long distance and last year in Hungary on the middle distance. In 2008 the Czech Team also took two more medals – the silver medal of Michal Smola and the bronze medal of Radka Brozkova on the middle distance.

- Obviously, here it will be a bit more difficult for us to attack the podium than in central Europe, but when devoted people do their best in the preparation, there is always a chance, says Novotny.

- We focus on our performances, we´ll see in the finish how high we can get, Novotny continues.

Both the Czech men and women have been close to the medals in the relays in the last international championships – the women team being in the lead at the start of the last leg at the European Champs in Bulgaria this year, and the mens team being part of the “relay incident” in Hungary along with Norway, France and Sweden last year. Is the relay the best medal chance for Czech Republic in Trondheim? The training of the Czech team seems to be geared towards having high speed and concentration at the end of the trainings – often including a short technical course to be run at high speed at the end of the trainings – making them well prepared to fight for the medals in the end of a relay in Trondheim…

Short interview Radek Novotny

Below you find a short interview with Radek Novotny.

- How was the selection for WOC done?
- Brozkova, Jurenikova, Smola, Dlabaja and Prochazka were pre-selected for some of the WOC races. However, they had to fight for the selection at other distances together with the other interested athletes at the selection races, which were held in Trondheim between 22nd and 25th of june. After these races, the team was set-up – the selection was based mainly on the selection races results. (The winners of middle and long were granted a place.) The runners were not selected to the team, but directly to particular distances.

- How has the road towards WOC been for the Czech Team?
- After having ignored Norway for many years, we came back for the WC in Oslo in june 2009. From there we went for a training camp to Trondheim to taste the terrains and disclose the most challenging features for us continentals. Then yet one week for the core runners in the autumn 2009 as well as some theoretical exercises during a winter time. Spring training camp, unfortunately moved to Halden because of snow. Then our selection races in Trondheim, and now we are at Gjenvollhytta again for a week of our final camp. There is one exception in our team – Vendula´s become a half Norwegian, so that we, after all, had a certain connection to norwegian orienteering from the very beginning.

- How is the current training camp is doing?
- We try to run as many model situations as possible, keeping a good speed at the same time as we´re trying not to get completely burned from the rough, power sucking terrains. To create a more competitive environment for this relatively small group of WOC runners we agreed on three common sessions with the danish team as well as we´ve invited also further czech runners selected for the World University Orienteering Champs to take part at the camp. Yesterday we had a relay simulation session with about 17 men and 17 women, which was nice (and effective indeed). Moreover, we stay at the hut in in the middle of the marches, getting more accustomed with Norwegian woods with every breath… ;)

- Your favourites to win gold medals in sprint, middle, long and relay for men/women?
- Honestly, I don´t have any favourites, as I already almost don´t remember the winners of all distances last year… Fortunately, there is plenty of very skilled and devoted canoons in o-world, so that the competition is definitely going to be exciting and we are granted ingenious runs from the gold medal winners. Some golds for Norway would be nice as it always helps the atmosphere of the champs, am I right, Petter?

Preparations in Sogndal

Many non-Scandinavian runners have spent a lot of time training in Norwegian terrain – one of them is Francois Gonon (France) who has lived in Trondheim for the last half year, and who has spent a lot of time training in WOC relevant terrain. He arrived in Sogndal (the venue of Fjord-o Nordvestgaloppen) already Sunday, and has been training 4-5 trainings in the area already. Helen Palmer of the GB team has also been doing some nice trainings in Sogndal already according to her Twitter page. Anne Margrethe Hausken and Anders Nordberg are using the first two days of Fjord-o Nordvestgaloppen as part of their preparations.

This week there are also other runners preparing for WOC in Norway: The Czech team is in Trondheim along with several other teams doing their last preparations.

JWOC Relay: Live from 10:00 CET

We are now ready for the last event in this years Junior World Championships in Denmark – the relay. The start is 10:00 CET for the women and 11:00 CET for the men. The internet coverage should be good in the relay area, and we therefore expect to have intermediate times from the forest for the relay.

The relay area is very hilly – with completely different orienteering challenges compared to the other races in JWOC. Due to the hilly nature of the terrain, the organizers have been allowed to deviate from the 4% climb rule for the relay. The relay course will be in an area which is unique to all of Denmark – with very hilly parts with open vegetation.

There are three legs in each relay – the mens first two legs are between 7.4 and 7.7 km – the last leg is 5.4-5.6 km. The womens first two legs are between 5.1 and 5.4 km – the last leg between 3.1 and 3.2 km.

Live reports

The LiveBlog below will be live during the JWOC Relay. Tweets with hashtag #jwoc or #jwoc2010 will be shown directly in the LiveBlog. There is no live speaker sound or GPS tracking at JWOC. We expect live results and intermediate times to be linked from this JWOC page about one hour ahead of the first start.

I expect to get the map with course after the last start (the map will be scanned and then sent to me – so expect some delay) – this will be posted in the LiveBlog as soon as I receive it.

If you are on a mobile phone, you can access the LiveBlog here.

JWOC Middle Final: Live from 11:00 CET

Posted by Jan Kocbach, 09 Jul 2010@5:00

jwocmaps2
Get ready for the last individual discipline of this Junior World Orienteering Championships in Denmark – the middle distance with the A-finals starting from 11:00 CET. Expect a lot of short legs with tricky orienteering as in the qualification – and probably also at least one longer leg with some routechoice challenges. If the challenges are similar to the qualification, it will be important to keep the concentration on top in the tricky parts – and the speed on top in the easier parts.

The first start in the mens class in the A-final is at 11:00 CET – whereas the three heat winners – Gaute Hallan Steiwer, Matthias Kyburz and Rasmus Thrane Hansen start in the end of the startfield between 12:56 and 13:00. The first start in the womens class is at 11:01 CET – here we find the heat winners Anastasia Trubkina, Emma Klingenberg and Sarina Jenzer at the end of the startlist between 12:55 and 12:59. The B- and C-finals start already from 09:00 CET.

Live reports

The LiveBlog below will be live during the JWOC Middle Final. Tweets with hashtag #jwoc or #jwoc2010 will be shown directly in the LiveBlog. There is no live speaker sound or GPS tracking at JWOC. “Live results” from the finish line will be linked from this JWOC page about one hour ahead of the first start – that means there will be no intermediate times from the forest. However, we hope to get reports directly from the finish area in the LiveBlog from Christian Bobach like we had on the Long distance.

I expect to get the map with course after the last start (the map will be scanned and then sent to me – so expect some delay) – this will be posted in the LiveBlog as soon as I receive it.

JWOC Middle Qual: Live from 10:00 CET

Posted by Jan Kocbach, 08 Jul 2010@5:00

jwocmaps2
The middle distance is the only JWOC discipline which has a qualification race – with more than 150 men on the start line there will be a fight to get to the finals. The first start is at 10:00 CET – and with 3 heats and 158 runners the last starter heads into the forest in the mens class at 11:44 CET. The women start at 10:01 CET – with the last heading out into the forest at 11:23 CET.

With course lengths of about 3.1-3.2 km for the women and 3.7-3.8 km for the men, expect the runners going to the final to be ready around 11:50 for the women and 12:15 for the men. We have Tove Alexandersson as the last starter among the women and Marius Thrane Ødum as the last starter among the men – so nothing is decided before the last starter is in the finish.

Again we have got quite flat courses – total of 95-105 meters height difference for the women and 125-130 meters for the men. 20 runners from each of the three heats go to the A-final. For the men there is both B- and C-final – runner places 21-40 go to the B-final – the rest to the C-final. All women outside the top 20 go to the B-final.

Update 09:20: There will be no live results today either – but the organizers will try to upload finish line times at regular intervals. We will be keeping the LiveBlog open in hopes that there will be some information coming out of Denmark during the race.

I have been promised map with course after the last start (the map will be scanned and then sent to me – so expect some delay) – this will be posted in the LiveBlog as soon as I receive it. Update: Maps are now posted to the LiveBlog!

Victories went to Pavel Kubat (Czech Republic) and Ida Bobach (Denmark) in today’s JWOC Long distance in Denmark. Sweden took silver medals in both categories – Johan Runesson among the men and Therese Klintberg among the women.

The race development was very exciting – especially in the mens class were first Olle Boström (SWE) had an 8 minute lead in the finish for a long time, then Matthias Kyburz took over the lead with nearly two minutes. Johan Runesson came in to a new lead position towards the end of the race, and then finally Pavel Kubat took the gold medal at a very late start number. Update: “Live results” will only be finish-times, and they will be updated approximately every 5 minutes. There will be reports from Christian Bobach from the arena directly in the LiveBlog. The start goes from 09:00 to 14:10 – and the men have a course of 11.3 km – so prepare for a long day in front of the computer if you plan to follow all of the JWOC long distance race today. The first starter is Dan Wolf of Czech Republic among the men – and Tytti Kirvesmies (FIN) among the women – whereas Guy Sabo (ISR) and Piibe Tammemäe (EST) are to be found in the other end of the startlist.

The LiveBlog below will be live during the JWOC Long. Tweets with hashtag #jwoc or #jwoc2010 will be shown directly in the LiveBlog. In addition, Christian Bobach contribute to the LiveBlog directly from the arena through his mobile phone. In addition to the LiveBlog, you can follow JWOC long through “live results” which will be updated every 5 minutes with best finish times on the JWOC page. There is no live speaker sound or GPS tracking at JWOC. Note that the start has been delayed with 40 minutes.

I have been promised map with course after the last start (Update 08:50: I just received a message that maps will be available only when all runners have passed the arena at around 15:00 CET – now 15:40 CET due to start being late by 40 minutes) – this will be posted in the LiveBlog as soon as I receive it.

If you are on a mobile phone, you can access the LiveBlog here.
