For those who were wondering about the large road on the first leg: it was out of bounds because it is a large highway that would not be safe to run along. Additionally, because the course is on a military base, all of the gates in the uncrossable fence along that road and the cemetery were locked, so the only feasible choices in competition stayed inside that fence. (The gates on the ski slope were open.)
