EOC Long Final: Map and Results

Posted by Jan Kocbach, 18 May 2012@16:00

Extraordinary performance by Simone Niggli – and another great win by Olav Lundanes! No matter if middle distance and long distance – Niggli and Lundanes take the gold medals. Niggli had four(!) minutes down to Tatiana Riabkina in second – Lundanes victory margin was one minute down to Matthias Merz. Minna Kauppi and Valentin Novikov took the bronze medals.

The runners were met by a tough course – with many route choice alternatives. The time differences between the different alternatives were not the biggest – the important thing was again to run fast and stick to your plan.

Maps
Men: – I have improved technically since last year

Lundanes (Gold):
- Physically I had a very good winter training, and I also feel that I have improved technically since last year.
- It was a tough race today. In the beginning I felt good and was running fast. I started feeling tired half way through the race, and the last part was just a lot of fighting.
- The relay is a big goal for us on Sunday – but not more than the other races – We want to win them all.

Merz (Silver):
- Obviously this type of terrain is not too bad for us Swiss. For me personally I feel it was mainly my general experience, which brought results today. It took only a few days of training here to feel quite comfortable with the terrain. But the terrain is unusual for us because we do not have this type of terrain at home
- For the relay we always have a big goal for a medal. For obvious reasons (home ground this year)the world champ relay is the main relay event for us this year.
- We have a big team, and the selection will be tough, but I am sure that this fact will help pushing us to great results

Novikov (Bronze):
- I just decided that I should use full speed for this terrain and didn’t think too much about if it would be good enough for the whole race. Then I thought about it, and decided to continue with this high speed ;)
- The podium on the long is very important for me because the last few years I have not been so good in the long races in Champs. So this has given me a lot of confidence and from now on I also believe in myself on long distance

Women: – I could not have run many seconds faster

Niggli (Gold):
- Today I had an almost perfect race. It is not so often that I run this well in a championships race. It was physically and technically a very good race. I could not have run many seconds faster!
- Yes, I was more than 4 minutes faster today, but we are all just women that love orienteering. the diffence today was that I am in very good shape and also managed to have full confidence in my orienteering all the way.
- My goal for the week is to run four stable races. I have now two gold medals, and I am very happy.

Riabkina (Silver):
- The race today was better than yesterday. I tried to go fast all the way. I believe that I chose good route choices today. I took the controls in the detailed areas without any mistakes. This felt very good. At the end of the race it was very tough and I was very tired, but I fought all the way.
- I have to say that my favourite distance is middle, but I also looking forward to the relay

Kauppi (Bronze):
- I am really happy for my medal today, actually. Of course you feel slightly disappointed by being this far behind Simone, but still I am really happy to be here [on the podium] today.
- The middle was my main goal for EOC this year, but I am also looking forward to the relay on Sunday. We have a very strong track record in relay and will of course go for the gold

EOC Middle: Maps and Results

Simone Niggli (Switzerland) and Olav Lundanes (Norway) took clear victories in today’s middle distance at the European Championships in Skattugnbyn, Sweden. Lundanes won ahead of Valentin Novikov (Russia) and Carl Waaler Kaas (Norway) whereas Tatiana Riabkina (Russia) and Minna Kauppi (Finland) were closest to the Swiss star Niggli.

- I had a quite good feeling, but of course when it is stony you never feel like you are flying, Olav Lundanes said after his victory – more than 1 minute ahead of the Russian silver medalist. - There was a small routechoice were I lost some time – at least to Carl, except for that it was a very good race for me.

Special terrain

- For me the most special was about the terrain. I have never seen the same before. And it was sometimes very very hard to understand the map for me, Novikov commented his race. - With 10 days more with training it could have been better, but it was a very good race.

Carl Waaler Kaas finished 3rd – and was happy to make a good race on the Norwegian national day.

- It was a really good feeling to win this medal especially on our national day – it was also planned before the race, so it was very good that we could do as planned. We will celebrate tonight with a dinner, and maybe now we will have some dessert :)

More careful than last year

- I had a very good winter training after the birth of our twins – I took it a bit easier this time than after the birth of our first child, Simone Niggli told at the press conference after the race. – I am very happy and pleased that I am in this good shape at this moment.

Minna Kauppi has been ill for much at the winter – but was back in shape just ahead of the championships.

- I was quite nerveous before the race because in the time leading up to the race everything was not as I had wanted it to be. I was more nerveous than usually, and I was quite ready to fight for the medals, the Finnish runner commented after the race. - I did one mistake, but otherwise I was very satisfied.

Ryabkina has had a very good spring – and managed to continue this with a medal at the European Championships.

- I did a good race without any mistakes – just maybe some route choices which were not the best – but overall it was not so bad. So I am very satisfied with my race today.

EOC Middle Qual: Maps and Results

Posted by Jan Kocbach, 14 May 2012@13:35

Valentin Novikov, Olav Lundanes, Johan Runesson, Minna Kauppi, Anne Margrethe Hausken Nordberg and Helena Jansson took the heat victories in EOC Middle Qualification which opened the Eurorpean Championships in the Falun area, Sweden, today. No big surprises, but as always some big names went out in the qualifications

Among the runner not making the cut were Swiss Martin Hubmann, French Vincent Coupat, Finnish Hannu Airila and British Graham Gristwood. Among the women Bettina Aebi (Switzerland) just got outside the Top 17.

Maps & GPS tracking

The courses look seemingly easy when looking at them at the map, but still there were lots of mistakes made – mostly direction mistakes as you can see in the GPS-tracking from the women. A combination of running speed and good direction were the key ingredients to get to the finals.

Results

17 from each heat went to the A-final – below reseults for all runners who got to the A-final are listed (Note some changes in official results compared to live results!).

10Mila Tips 2012: The winner is …

Posted by Jan Kocbach, 06 May 2012@16:00

tio0363
More than 230 people set up their tips in the 10Mila Tips 2012.  According to the preliminary unofficial results, Alexander Lubina won the 10Mila 2012 Tips with 784 points – 23 points ahead of Johan Runesson. Congratulations to the winners!

The key to Lubina’s (unofficial as of now) victory was very good knowledge of women orienteers. His women tips got him 457 points – after hitting correctly with the top 5 on the results: Halden on top, Tisaren in second,  Tampereen Pyrintö in 3rd, OK Linnè in 4th and Domnarvets in 5th were all correct. A small disappointment maybe that Göteborg-Majorna finished only 8th instead of 6th, but still not bad! In the men’s class Lubina got only 327 points – but still enough to take the overall victory in the 2012 10Mila Tips!

Here you find the unofficial results – please add a comment if you spot any errors.

10Mila GPS Tracking ready for analysis!

Posted by Jan Kocbach, 06 May 2012@16:00

tio0365

10 legs for the men and 5 legs for the men – all with GPS tracking on around 25-30 teams – means a lot of interesting material for analysis. Everything is ready for analysis both in GPSSeuranta and in 2DRerun (see below) now. You may even upload your own GPS-routes and compare with the top runners if you choose to use 2DRerun for your analysis

The above example is from the long leg on the long night – were you can see the different variants run (see in long leg 6-7 variants in 2DRerun here). As you can see, the left/direct variant of TuMe (also run by Boström some seconds slower) is the fastest variant. However, when comparing in detail Boström versus Troeng, you can see that the first part of Troeng’s routechoice is actually faster.

AutOanalysis: Houvila versus Wingstedt

The autOanalysis functionality in 2DRerun gives you a useful tool to look at the decisive moments in the relay. The example below is Halden versus Kalevan Rasti (open full analysis in 2DRerun) on the 6th leg – where the gap from Halden to Kalevan Rasti went from manageable 2 minutes to “impossible” 4+ minutes. On the autOanalysis you can easily see where Halden takes the two minutes. More than a minute is taken in the southernmost part where Halden’s Wingstedt takes better routechoices: Exploiting the paths/roads were possible and running straighter were there are no paths to exploit.

tio0367

Leg 10: Kristiansand versus Halden

Kristiansand’s Omdal went out on the last leg some seconds ahead of Halden’s Lundanes. In this autOanalysis you can see how the race developed between them. As you can see Lundanes in practice decided the race in the start by getting a gap to Omdal so that Omdal could not run in his back.

tio0370

Leg 5: Nurmonen’s mistake

Another decisive moment for Kalevan Rasti was the mistake of Nurmonen on the first control of the 5th leg (Halden versus Kalevan Rasti autOanalysis 5th leg). More than 2 minutes lost on the first control – and even if Nurmonen run better for the rest of the leg, still a lot of time lost.

tio0368

Leg 7: Another early mistake for Kalevan Rasti

The unforked leg 7 was were Kalevan Rasti with Prochazka had the opportunity to get closer to Halden again – to get within shooting range ahead of the 3 last legs. However, again Kalevan Rasti got a mistake on the early controls (see Halden versus Kalevan Rasti autOanalysis leg 7). More than a minute lost to the first three controls was enough to make it impossible to reduce the gap for the Czech runner.

Some further examples

Some examples from 2DRerun from the men’s relay:

Analysis of your own race

There is a lot of interesting GPS-data to analyze from 10Mila – the above are just some examples. For those of you running yourselves, using autOanalysis against the top runners is certainly going to be instructive in your analysis of your own race.  There are several screencasts available showing you how to use 2DRerun/3DRerun, but the quick variant is:

  1. Upload your GPS-route here (or directly from your Garmin watch) – note that you need to login to upload
  2. Choose the routes you want to compare here
  3. Click Open routes in 2DRerun, and you are ready to go

10Mila 2012: Victory for Halden

Posted by Jan Kocbach, 06 May 2012@8:40

Olav Lundanes decided 10Mila for Halden with an impressive performance at the last leg early this morning. Lundanes started the last leg 15 seconds behind Hans Gunnar Omdal, Kristiansand – but the World Champion on long distance from Trondheim in 2012 was simply stronger today, pulling away second by second.

- I tried to run up in the back of Omdal as fast as possible – I caught him already at the road right after the start, Olav Lundanes said after his race.

- Then I got a chance to get away direct to the 1st control when he [Omdal] took to the right, and I could get a gap direct, Lundanes continued.

- I did not run so well the first two controls, but then it went very well. But it was a tricky course – I had to concentrate all the way. I did two small mistakes, but the rest of the race was very good.

Thierry Gueorgiou, Kalevan Rasti, started the last leg in third spot 5 minutes behind Lundanes, but Lundanes never made mistakes big enough for Gueorgiou to have the chance to get closer.

Reset after “Långa”

As often is the case, the race was restarted for the top teams after the 4th leg – “Långa natten”. Olle Boström did a fantastic performance on this monsterleg just like last year – coming back at the front of a 12 men big field containing all the three big favourites Halden, Kristiansand and Kalevan Rasti.

1 Olle Boström Järla Orientering 1 308:19 0:00

11 Jan Mrázek Stora Tuna OK 1 308:55 0:36
12 Fredrik Eliasson Halden SK 2 309:00 0:41

5th leg: Changes in the top

As often is the case, the 5th leg made for some bigger changes in the field. Halden’s Marcus Millegård does a good race and comes back in 2nd spot only 13 seconds behind Denseln. Kristiansand and Kalevan Rasti are left with a gap of around 1:40.

1 Erik Ivarsson Sandberg OK Denseln 1 363:51 0:00
2 Marcus Millegård Halden SK 1 364:04 0:13
3 Martin Härberg Järla Orientering 1 365:14 1:23
4 Andreas Höye Göteborg-Majorna OK 1 365:23 1:32
5 Asgeir Bakken Rognstad NTNUI 1 365:24 1:33
6 Antti Nurmonen Kalevan Rasti 1 365:27 1:36
7 Mats Dahlén Kristiansand OK 1 365:31 1:40
8 Tomas Stenström OK Linné 1 365:45 1:54
9 Hans Olof Amblie IFK Lidingös Skid o OK 1 365:45 1:54

6th leg: Kalevan Rasti looses the chance for victory

Kalevan Rasti never got closer than after the 5th leg. Jarkko Huovila lost more than 2 minutes – finishing the 6th leg at 3:49 behind. Halden increases the distance down to Kristiansand – now being at 1:57.

1 Emil Wingstedt Halden SK 1 414:21 0:00
2 Baptiste Rollier Kristiansand OK 1 416:18 1:57
3 Jarkko Huovila Kalevan Rasti 1 418:10 3:49

7th leg: Kristiansand getting closer with young Hubmann

On the 7th leg the young Hubmann-brother Martin makes contact for Kristiansand again. Running faster than Halden’s Mattias Karlsson in the end, Hubmann takes Kristiansand to a 1:12 gap after a best leg time by Hubmann. Prochazka for Kalevan Rasti looses another half minute – the gap now going up to 4:26.

1 Mattias Karlsson Halden SK 1 449:47 0:00
2 Martin Hubmann Kristiansand OK 1 450:59 1:12
3 Jan Prochazka Kalevan Rasti 1 454:13 4:26

8th leg: Holger Hott takes Kristiansand up in the top again

On the 8th leg Holger Hott took Kristiansand all the way into the absolute top again, finishing 5 seconds behind Halden after a best leg time by Hott – the second in a row by Kristiansand. Philippe Adamski (Kalevan Rasti) looses another minute – now this starts looking hopeless for Kalevan Rasti with top national team runners in both the Norwegian teams in the last two legs.

1 Magne Dæhli Halden SK 1 517:33 0:00
2 Holger Hott Kristiansand OK 1 517:38 0:05
3 Mats Troeng OK Linné 1 523:00 5:27
4 Philippe Adamski Kalevan Rasti 1 523:00 5:27

9th leg: Hubmann takes Kristiansand into the lead

On the 9th leg Daniel Hubmann takes Kristiansand all the way into the lead – 15 seconds ahead of Halden. Hubmann would usually have taken the last leg for Kristiansand, but due to injury problems he run the 9th leg. Fabian Hertner has decided the relay for Kalevan Rasti on the 9th leg earlier – but the Swiss is not in his best shape and lost some seconds to the lead instead of deciding the relay this year.

1 Danie Hubmann Kristiansand OK 1 560:22 0:00
2 Søren Bobach Halden SK 1 560:37 0:15
3 Fabian Hertner Kalevan Rasti 1 565:59 5:37

10th leg: Lundanes decides

Lundanes (Halden) caught Omdal (Kristiansand) direct after the start – and managed to get a gap already to the first control. The gap increased steadily all the way until the end – in the end finishing at 3:30. Even some small mistakes did not make it possible for Omdal to get closer.
