Daniel Hubmann beat Thierry Gueorgiou with 22 seconds on the opening stage of NAOM 2014 – with that setting the stage for the 2014 season [Update with GPS!]. Anastasia Tikhonova won the women class ahead of Amelie Chataing. Most of the orienteering elite visits Portugal/Spain as part of their winter training between January and March – and NAOM is the first of the bigger races this season. Six hundred competitors from fourteen countries competed in Portugal today.

– I missed about fifteen seconds at the second control but after that it was a good race. I push hard all the time – sometimes it was much about running – but I had a good flow, good legs and it was a pleasure to run the course under this fantastic conditions.

– It’s good to get into the rhythm, after the winter break, and it’s also good to feel the pressure again and try to perform well, the winner in the men’s class – Hubmann – comments.

Update: Here is the deciding part of the race were Hubmann wins the race. Looks a lot like a direction mistake by Gueorgiou. Pace is shown using colors green (fast) to red (slow).

The women’s winner Tikhonova was second last year – and did a good run after a bad start.

– My feelings are not bad, but I did a lot of small mistakes on the second and third controls, Tikhonova comments.

– After that, I could run well and it was good. I liked the terrains and it’s very good to have this kind of competitions in the early season, demanding enough, giving you the possibility to run at a good speed”.
