Who did the Orienteering Achievement of the Year 2016?

achiev2016_plakat

Suggest a nomination for the Orienteering Achievement of 2016 and win great prizes! Remember that we are not necessarily looking for the best orienteer/team of 2016 – but rather the best achievements. There is one class for men and one for women – juniors can also be suggested, the same goes for teams.

Among all really good nomination texts, we will draw one or two of the great sponsor prizes (prizes valued to more than 5000 Euro – more about the prizes below in the sponsor section). The number of prizes drawn will depend on the number of nomination suggestions being posted. Many suggestions = more prizes drawn. Good nomination text & story = high chance to win.

To get you started, see the nominees for 2015 along with their stories/nomination texts here:

Route To Christmas: Day 23 2023

Today’s leg in Route to Christmas 2023 is leg 19 from the French Championships long ...

  1. Anastasia Denisova 3rd place WOC Sprint

Anastasia participating for the first time at world champs shocked the world by taking first ever medal for Belarus at WOC . After a medals at junior level also bronze in sprint(EYOC 2011 and JWOC 2013) now came the time for her to take and her first medal at senior level and also had great results at other individual races 6th place at long and 8th at middle.
A very big improvement and great achievement for this young girl

    Prize:Danish Spring

  2. I nominate Natalia Gemperle (Vinogradova) for her amazing breakthrough and collecting 5 international medals at WOC and EOC IN 2016. Approaching WOC as not the main favorite, without a single camp in relevant terrains, she had been finally challenged in forest disciplinces only by Tove.A and the margin wasn’t that huge. Natalia managed to become both European and World champion with a strong Russian team in relays. I’d like to mention here especially her cool-headed execution in a last leg of exciting WOC relay.

  3. Emily Kemp at WOC and EOC.

This is an easy choice. :)

  4. Joey Hadorn, he took 3 gold and one silver medals from the JWOC, that’s a superb performance.

  5. Simona Aebersold – The Swiss girl just 18 years won three gold medals at the JWOC2016 in Scoul, Switzerland. A big performance, with a lot of relevaance in the swiss media and in the orienteering world. After Simone, we have a new Simona?

    Price: Scottish6Day

  6. Tim Robertson (NZ)

Halfway through the WOC Middle Distance 2015 he had a big fall and crawled out of the forest with a dislocated shoulder. He got surgery back in NZ in November (with the support from orienteers all over the world) and came back to Europe after a long recovery period. 5th in the WC Sprint in Poland (May) and 13th in the WOC Sprint final 2016. He ended the season with a 4th place in the Final World Cup in Switzerland.
That’s the story of patience, persistance and determination.

He is also known for being the first man winning two JWOC sprint gold medals in a row (and with the bronze in Czech Republic that makes 3 medals in a row).

  7. 100% Emily Kemp. She did the best that Canada has done in their ENTIRE history of orienteering. This year was monumental to us. Please vote for her!! Best EOC and WOC results ever for Canada. Before then we only have one result and the record was 10th over 30 years ago.

Emily all the way, Go Canada!!!!

  8. I would like to nominate Matthias Kyburz for finally taking the last step up also in forest competition at the big championships, winning gold at both WOC and EOC 2016 in the middle distance, despite being considered by many as a sprinter. Also, so dominant in the overall World Cup this year!

Aguiar da Beira “O” Meeting 2017 would be fantastic as a prize ;-)

  9. Maybe a bit an alternative suggestion: Jarkko Ryyppö, Joakim Svensk and Mats Troeng for making this map of almost whole Finland. Shows what is possible. Very interesting for people preparing for upcoming competitions or some who just want to run on an area never mapped before. So no excuses for no map close to you in Finland anymore! Maybe it will also help to find more areas wich should give a really nice “real” orienteering map from. So less time spend in finding nice terrains and more time to focus on mapping them.

    Interested in:
Scotisch 6-Days, ABOM 2017 or Lipica Open 2017.

  10. Thomas Curiger:
Gold at JWOC in Middle and Relay, Gold at JEC Sprint
Silver at JWOC Long and Sprint, Silver at JEC Relay

Great results by this young man at the most important races of the season. He was able to handle the pressure of taking part in his last JWOC in the home country. Stood a bit in the shadow of Hadorn at the start of JWOC week where he got two Silver medals, but was able to finished the week even better by winning both Middle and Relay Gold and stepping out of the shade. Great finish of the season by winning Medals again at JEC.

Prize: Either Scottish 6 Days or ABOM 2017

  11. Emily Kemp. A tale of dedication and talent rewarded. WOC 4th and 8th. EOC 4th and 7th. Great results for her, historic results for her country.

    Scottish Six Days please ;p

  12. MAJA ALM.
The best sprinter for last year’s also super strong in forest. Silver in WOC relay. 5 position on WOC middle distance.Medals from EOC.And others races.
    Brilliant domination in womans orienteering

  13. I nominated the best team :Russian women team. Anastasia Rudnaya, Svetlana Mironova, Natalia Gemperle. WOC gold and EOC bronze. It is fantastik result and first WOC women-relays gold for Russia.
    Prize: Fife +Fife Sicily

  14. Matthias Kyburz, for all his victories. He managed to keep a very high performance level during all the season, both middle distance and long distance. Hard to win both WOC and World Cup!

    Price: OO CUp

  15. Emily Kemp for her dedication and hard work. In this year she managed to achieve great goals even if not medals for her on EOC/WOC. 100% sure next year we’ll hear more about Emily.

    Price: Durmitor Orienteering Challenge

  16. I vote for Anastasia Denisova. She came out from a small nation without a really big Federation and orienteering movement.

  17. astasia Denisova 3rd place WOC Sprint

  18. Anastasia Denisova

It was ferst time Anastasia participating at world champs and her result was big surprize for everyon, she get first ever medal for Belarus at WOC

    Joye Hadorn
No words! He is very young and strong!

  19. Prize: Five+five

  20. I nominate Thierry Gueorgiou. He has leading the orienteering technique forward for 15 years. In 2016 he shared countless all his training with additional comments on Attackpoint / WorldofO. It is easy to write when you have success, but he also wrote detailed comments when he experienced disappointment. A lot to learn for interested readers.
    Price: Antalya or Danish Spring

  21. As many others, I would also like to nominate Joey Hadorn for his JWOC week with 4 medals, 3 of them gold. Running as good as he did 4 races in a row (middle qualification not counted) is impressive. We all knew that he was a good runner, but in those races he had really good technical performances. Really good mental strength to run so good so many races in a row. I felt like a background actor during that week!

Prize: Five + Five, Durmitor, Antalya
