Course of the Year 2017: Submit your suggestions!

wocmiddlepart2017

What was the best orienteering course of 2017? The last stage of France 5 won in 2016, the World Champs long distance in Scotland won in 2015 and the World Champs middle distance in Italy won in 2014.

Before that we had two years with Portuguese winners: a spectacular sprint between boulders and old buildings in 2013 and some great technical orienteering at Portugal O-Meeting in 2012.

The search for the orienteering course of the year  is always fun and interesting – with many nice courses and maps surfacing! The rules are simple: Suggest a course from a competition or training in 2017, and state the reason why you think this course deserves to be “The course of the Year 2017″. The best among all the suggestions will be chosen – and there will be a voting process among the readers of “World of O” in order to name “The course of the year 2017″.

And please state the reason for your suggestion – that’s where the fun & the passion for orienteering comes in! YOU are the one to decide who takes the prestigious top spot this year- first by submitting suggestions – and then by voting. As part of the “Course of the Year 2017″ we have some great interviews from top runners where they talk about their favourite courses and maps from the last year. Stay tuned during the next days…

More than 4000 Euro worth of prizes for YOU

Prizes from sponsors make it more fun to be in on the suggestions and voting. This year we again have some great sponsors and prizes – with a total value of more than 4000 Euro! We hope this means many good suggestions & a lot of interactivity from YOU! See all details about the sponsors & prizes below! Use the comments below, and submit either

  1. The course which in your opinion is the best course you run in 2017 yourself!
  2. The best course you set this year as a course-setter.
  3. The overall best course you have seen/heard about in 2017

Most course-setters surely have to make some compromises, so finding the perfect one is probably not possible. Still, it is interesting to see which is the best course you run or set in 2017!

Starting point

To provide you with a starting point, I’ve picked out a few different candidates for you based on maps and courses I have seen in omaps.worldofo.com and comments on various webpages:

  • One course the comes to mind when looking back at 2017 is the World Orienteering Championships Middle distance in Estonia – this is the course which challenged the author of this article the most this year – many interesting legs and really tricky to find the way (without controls in the forest). The course had a nice combination of legs where you could increase the speed and legs where you had to be really careful, adapting your approach to the terrain and difficulties leg by leg. It was also nice because the combination of course and terrain was a bit of a surprise for many athletes.

wocmiddlepart2017

  • From middle distance in very technical terrain to a long distance where the course setter used forbidden areas (like artificial boundaries in sprint) to construct route choice challenges for the athletes; the Junior World Orienteering Championships Long distance (see course here). The way the course setter had to dig far down in his toolbox to make interesting challenges is one thing that makes this course stand out.

I am sure you have a lot of better suggestions than the one I gave above – this is just a starting point to see the wide variety of candidates there are out there. Submit your suggestions now!

Rules

The following rules are given for “The course of the Year 2017″.

  • The course must have been run in competition or training in 2017 (an exeption for courses in December 2016 as they were not covered in last year’s contest)
  • Suggestions are submitted as a comment to this postincluding link to the map with course in a quality which is good enough for the readers to understand the course and the challenges involved. Please add information about location/date if that is not clear from the link provided. Also include which sponsor prize you are interested in if you win.
  • You must give a reason for why you think this course deserves to be named “The course of the Year 2017″ (or why it is the best course you run/set this year). All reasons are valid. Examples can for example be “varied orienteering challenges”, “extremely technical orienteering”, “high fun-factor”, “fantastic map”, “spectacular orienteering”, “fantastic nature” – a combination of these – or a totally different reason. To get all the way to the top you should probably have a combination of reasons…
  • The course may be any foot-orienteering discipline – e.g. a long distance, a middle distance, a sprint distance. It may also be a technical training course – like e.g. a corridor orienteering exercise.
  • There will be a voting process among the readers of “World of O” in order to name “The course of the year 2017″. This is your second chance to win sponsor prizes!

Prizes from our Sponsors

Prizes from our Sponsors always makes it more fun! There will be a prize for the first one suggesting the course which ends up becoming “The course of the Year 2017″, and prizes drawn among the ones suggesting and voting. Route To Christmas: Day 23 2023

Today’s leg in Route to Christmas 2023 is leg 19 from the French Championships long ...

  1. Polish Championships long distance, 23/09/2017, Puszcza Darzlubska – very interesting course, both physically and technically. Difference of altitude not big, however, all together with the swamps and wetlands areas it was quite tiring. My subjective opinion is that this course was one of the most demanding courses this year!

  2. I suggest woc middle mens course! One of the most technical races last couple of years, and with a nice finish for the King of orienteering!
    http://www.tulospalvelu.fi/gps/2017wocMiddleM/?v=m3

    • Well, I see now that thoose races are pre nominated… Or? If not, i would like ocad 12 as sponsor price😉

      • @Obasen: You are first & in big luck if the WOC Middle is the course of the year – thanks for suggesting – and thanks for a good reason!

  3. I nominate the M-12 course from the 5. Day at the WOC 2017 spectator races. Not the M-21 course – but the M-12!!! An extremely challenging course with a number og controls shared with the M-21 course. My littlebrother did the course without using a compass – because he hasnt learnt hos to use it. He finished the course in 1.05 and it was won in 31 min. I think the terrain from the middle/ relay was supprisingly difficult and entertaining – and it gave a lot og people great orienteering experiences! – at least my littlebrother :)

  4. I suggest World Cup middle final in Switzerland. Quite a small map, but a very nice and challenging course and a great tv coverage, really nice and exiting to follow!
    Price: Latvian O week

  5. Arttu Syrjäläinen

Suomi-100 course by Atte Lahtinen http://mysport.fi/mysport/my-doma/show_map.php?user=atte.lahtinen&map=5273 this is just awesome!

  6. Egypt Orienteering Championships had special event this year. Although course was not technically too demanding, it was quite different from what we are used in Europe or other parts of the World. Spectacular views to the red see, white buildings in resort and sandy beeches made this course fantastic in terms of special nature, big fun, great environment and challenging course. This was first ever orienteering event held in Sharm El Sheikh and Sinai (Egypt) and it was also a World Ranking Event.

    Interested in OCAD 12

    • If needed I can send better resolution of the map for archive via e-mail.

    • Great, Damir. Always nice with orienteering courses from new places with new organizers and settings. Thanks for sharing!

    • I think you should withdraw the map from Egypt from the competition. The cartographers’ work as well as their plane tickets have not been paid yet but this map has been confiscated by EA, Damir Gobec. You do not have to encourage such attitudes

  7. I suggest the sprint course from PWT China stage 1 in Hongluo temple:
    part 1 http://p-w-t.org/download/china17/map1m1.jpg, part 2 http://p-w-t.org/download/china17/map1m2.jpg
Why? Because the course offered some interesting route choices (6-7, 7-8, 15-16), mixed with technical short legs within a temple and between a large amount of Arhat statues (video: https://www.instagram.com/p/Bao0egwhxtJ/), making it truly special challenge and experience. Additionally, the map was at 1:2500 scale, thus it was needed to pay extra attention when selecting the best routes. Also, the terrain was very steep. Altogether, a very different sprint to what we are used to in Europe.

Prize: I would prefer the MOC sprint camp.

    • Thanks for suggestion and very good text for the nomination – that’s when you can really understand why the course is something special.

  8. Italian Champs Long distance M ELITE – Foresta del Cansiglio. Part 1 & 2
    http://www.o-team.it/doma/show_map.php?user=alessio.tenani&map=355
    http://www.o-team.it/doma/show_map.php?user=alessio.tenani&map=356
Entire map with ME course: http://www.o-team.it/doma/show_map.php?user=alessio.tenani&map=357

A wonderful scenario and a very good course for this long distance, where every step was like in a fairy tale and the 95′ of the competition were really flying. Map change, long route choices, phi loop, tricky parts…all the ingredients for the perfect recipe of how a long distance should look like :)

    Prize: PIOM

  9. Jeroným Kamenický

I suggest H21A final course at Czech middle championship – challenging course with many changes in speed and difficulty
    https://www.tulospalvelu.fi/gps/private/201170611H/ or http://www.obpostupy.cz/scripts/reitti.cgi?act=map&id=1223&kieli=cz&touch=1 or http://osn-cz.eu/doma/show_map.php?user=Matej+Kamenicky&map=525
Interested in WOC 2019 spectator races

  10. For me one of the best courses is this years 10mila. Really tough terrain, especially at night and some nice courses with good forkings. Enjoyed it pretty much. Choose Leg2 but could have choosen any of the night legs.

    http://vagval.snattringesk.se/show_map.php?user=Simon+Hector&map=704

    • I enjoyed this one as well, color, but from the other side as responsible for GPS tracking in the online broadcast. Used quite some hours with these courses both before the event and on race day/night – some nice challenges here. Unfortunately didn’t get around to run there this time.

      • Nice reading the positive comments about this year´s 10MILA above as well as in the interview with Frederic Tranchand. Also fine to see that the terrain and courses where challenging also for you, even only in front of your computer.
In total we were four course setters that split the work to quite an even extent. Lennart set the youth relay, Mats the women´s and me and Ingemar the 10MILA relay. At the latter I had the privilege to set legs 4-8.
Together we shared the same vision – to give the competitors a challenge with varying orienteering from the starting point all the way until the last control. From my opinion we succeeded.
As always, big events require a lot of work and even if it ended up in more than I expected it was worth all hours I put into it. Looking back now, about half a year after the event, it still an ego-boost to think of the fact that it was on “my” legs the competition was settled and that orienteering ability and focus on the runner´s own course was a decisive factor for the winning team.
@ Jan – come back to me if you pass Gothenburg, I have some spare maps for you to use ;-). I recommend you not running there in late summer months though – long grass makes the terrain not only just challenging…

        • Thanks Anders – always nice to hear from the course setters from the large events. I know there has been a lot of hard work there …

  11. I suggest the 2nd day of Alpe Adria Orienteering Championships 2017 – middle distance:
    http://www.seeoc2018.si/images/news/aa2017_map.jpg

Additional analysis of the course is available here: http://www.seeoc2018.si/en/2018/news/6/how-to-orienteer-in-karst. Although the course is a middle distance with relatively short legs in difficult karst terrain, the routechoices were the ones to decide the winners. All in all – it was a perfect competition day in a really nice arena and many satisfied runners.

    Prize: OCAD

    • Thanks, Klemen – nice with a middle distance course with decisive route choices – and karst terrain really is my favourite. Let’s see if I can manage to put in Slovenia on my calendar next year again – this year was the first time in 10-12 years that I didn’t visit Slovenia. I also appreciate seeing some analysis.

  12. MOC Championship 2nd stage. Paestum
Very interesting and unique labyrinth orienteering in historical place
    http://karten.guedels.ch/show_map.php?user=remoruch&map=1434
Prize: MOC Training Camp + MOC Championships

  13. http://www.tulospalvelu.fi/gps/20170924h/

Czech long distance champs, this time in epic area of steep and slippery slopes with old beech forest and many stones and boulders. During the race it was raining hard and there was fog in upper parts. At all, it was big challenge, very tough competition technically, physically and mentally too.

And little post-race GPS analysis (in czech): http://o-news.cz/rychle-nohy-v-raspenave-analyza-h21a/

    As a price, I would take Easter4.

    • Thanks Lada – some nice long legs and quite a few challenges. I’ll save this one for Route to Christmas!

    • Thanks a lot, Todor – a great suggestion. We’ll see this one again tomorrow in the interview with Emily Kemp. One of her favourites this season – and I can understand why…

    • I really appreciate seeing maps and courses from all over the world. Again two nice courses – this time from Bulgaria. I think I’ll have to choose one of them for the contest, and then I choose Day 1 – it looks like the course uses the terrain in a nice way, varying the challenges in different parts of the terrain.

  14. Terje Wiig Mathisen

There has been lots of good courses this year, my personal favorite was the county championship in Fet outside Oslo where we ran a nice course on a really good map of interesting terrain:

    https://tmsw.no/qr/show_map.php?user=terjem&map=1442

My alternative which was the second Tiomila night leg has already been suggested.

    • Thanks, Terje – always good to get some input from your side. I think I’d chosen 10Mila of your two alternatives, but the county champs also looks interesting.

  15. Norwegian Champs Long. Very difficult `classic` scandinavian terrain. Course with big routechoces. Strong start field in Men class. This competition for really forest runners.
    http://omaps.worldofo.com/?id=216739

    • Thanks, Artem – this was indeed a tough one. And a good preparation for WOC 2019 and World Cup in the Halden area next year…

  16. Not sure how you count Elena’s suggestion for WOC Long (just women course or both), but that was definitely one of the best races for me this year. It was really tough and terrain was really hard with low visibility, lots of route choices and definitely what WOC long should be. Maybe last part could be better, but I can understand needs of TV and spectators.
I have my map framed on the wall as one of the toughest races in my life.
    Here is men course: http://www.dxdeluxe.se/linnekartparmen/show_map.php?user=Osamoborac&map=5345

Also, already mentioned WOC middle distance was really nice, with nice contour details and low visibility, you had to be on your top for that race.
Similar goes for another nice race that Klemen mentioned few comments above, Alpe Adria middle.

But maybe a real gem was Easter4, 2nd (middle) and 3rd (long) day on same terrain. Real beauty of terrain and quite nice courses. Here is map from middle distance and on that day we had nice rainy conditions that added extra flavor to the race. http://www.dxdeluxe.se/linnekartparmen/show_map.php?user=Osamoborac&map=5270

    As a price, I’d like Latvia O-Week

    • Thank you, Matija. Yes, both the WOC races were great races. Thanks also for another Slovenian map and course – great orienteering in that karst terrain!

  17. Aguiar da Beira “O” Meeting 2017 had amazing races. Both middle and long courses are would be fair winners of this comeptition.
Great mapmaking style, very readable, and very technical and varied courses.
Both Middle and Long were won by Thierry Gueorgiou, with Olav Lundanes being second.

The head courses setter were Bruno Nazário (middle) and António Amador (Long).

    Men Elite middle map: https://events.loggator.com/9qYcsFunsTzoMJ2x
    Men Elite long map: https://events.loggator.com/Y-bU1OWZN3KFSX_I

Thierry twitted some nice words about ABOM2017 the long distance:

    https://twitter.com/tgueorgiou/status/838435519419801601

    Sponsors price: OCAD Orienteering 12

    • Both nice courses, Rafael. I think there is only room for one of these among the nominations – and from my point of view the long distance course was the most interesting one, maybe because there was room for more variation and varied challenges in this longer course.

    • Agree!
So let’s fight with the Long course :)

  18. 1. I did not made so many runs this year so the choices are limited but Jukola 2nd leg was in a way nice. (WOC spectator races at Vitipalu were also good, a bit too difficult to me…
    2. –
    3. Junior World Orienteering Championships Long distance

    • Thank you, Juhana. I ran the Jukola 1st leg, and for me that was definitely too much running without that much purpose on the longer legs, but I saw the second leg which had replaced some of the long legs with some nice and intriguing orienteering. JWOC Long is definitely interesting, yes, as I also mentioned in the article.

  19. I suggest stage 4 from PWT in China.
    http://p-w-t.org/download/china17/map4m.jpg
As I first looked at the map I was overwhelmed from the number of options at some routechoices and this is really a unique map and terrain.

  20. Covalciuc Marina

    Luxembourg city race
Very interesting and challenging sprint distance

  21. I nominate the Norwegian ultralong distance championships http://www.tulospalvelu.fi/gps/20170820ultraH21/ . It looks like a really nice course with really challenging and varying orienteering in a really nice terrain.

    Price, Easter4

  22. My yearly non-European suggestion this year goes to the Long Distance WOC Team Trials for both Canada & the US, held in Minnesota, around two hours north of Minneapolis.

The M21 course is available here: http://docs.wixstatic.com/ugd/0bc8c4_55f189c2087a4d828d492158711c2d9c.pdf

The course-setting is fairly good, with a few interesting legs and definitely some nice variety with some interesting route choice legs, and some variety when comparing the south west part of the map with the rest. There are plenty of trails that occasionally make it difficult have every leg a special one.

What made it really memorable was the forest. See how the map is all white? That’s exactly what it was like. There was no area that wasn’t pristine white forest. Amazing white forest with a leafy forest floor, great visibility, pleasant runnability. Straight was often an option, but a potentially tricky one that could find you off course and hopelessly lost if you weren’t careful. And note: 2 meter contours, so lots of rather subtle detail, yet it never seemed ambiguous or unfair.

I did not expect to encounter this kind of terrain in North America and it could compete with any quality area in Scandinavia. Europeans might take this stuff for granted because it is basically everyone’s backyard, but its not always easy to find forests like this in North America.

  23. I know you have seen this one, but since it does not seem to have been submitted “formally” yet, I submit Western Canadian Championships Long: http://orienteering.ca/cgi-bin/reitti.pl?act=map&id=582&cID=9

  24. My choice is the sprint distance in Ukraine KyivOpen-2017 (01.10.2017).
This is probably the most technically difficult sprint in my practice. The distance was called “break brains”, because almost every leg was difficult and interesting. This made impossible to view few next legs and it mean challenge in each leg. On the leg, you did not immediately see the best option, or it was difficult to make a choice among the equivalent options. In such conditions it was important to keep a balance between attention to the details of the map, planning the course and speed – this is a sprint!) Add to this an absolutely new map and get a wonderful distance from the young planner Olena Pitirimova
    http://3drerun.worldofo.com/2d/index.php?idmult%5B%5D=-458464

And I very want taking part MOC Training Camp + MOC Championships

  25. NM Ultralång. It looks so brutal and tough that it should be course of the year! Proper long distance orienteering! http://www.tulospalvelu.fi/gps/20170820ultraH21/

  26. I would like to nominate the final race in Harry Lagerts nightcup, chasing start, the Legendar-course.
One of the most epic Challenges every year, 15+km in though Nordmarka terrain at night. This year from Sørkedalen to Sognsvann.
The course was challenging With long legs, and when you add to this a lot of rain the days up to the event, and fog during the race, it was a Legendary race.

Look at the course in Livelox http://omaps.worldofo.com/index.php?id=219374
(some snacks for a Route to Christmas as well!)

(if price, I would like the Bubo Cup)

    • Thank you, Eirik. Always nice courses on the long Harry Lagerts final – we’ve even featured it in Route to Christmas some times.

  27. My suggestion for this year is the Lorca-O-Meeting Sprint in Lorca in February.
I think it was one of the sprints I had the biggest difficulties in finding the right rythm technically and physically. There were many small route choices and combining that with really high navigation difficulties, the sprint becomes a big challenge. You never know when to try to push more and when to stop reading, because in sprints you always feel to have to run the whole way, and here you had this challenge from the first control until the finish. In addition to that, it was also though physically with several steep uphills also on stairs, which made you tired for taking decisions.

Prize: I would like OCAD 12

  28. Finnish champs middle distance H21. Very technical orienteering and demanding terrain to run. http://www.tulospalvelu.fi/gps/2017smkeskiH21/

Mykind of prize would be Bergen Sprint Camp, Bubo cup, Latvia o-week or Ocad

  29. I suggest the French South West nationale
    Map link: http://www.matrace.fr/gadget/cgi/reitti.cgi?act=map&id=936&kieli=fr&touch=1
    Route 3 or 4
The terrain was very hard to run with stony ground, interesting long route choices where you could loose quite lot of times and controls in technical challenging areas with no visibility.
The best race I run this year.

  30. My choice for the best course of this year is SAXBO 2017 in Lückendorf. Map here: http://o-news.cz/wp-content/uploads/2017/04/SAXBO_H21E.jpg
As always terrains around Oybin offer very specific experience. Giant rocks, steep slopes and spectacular views from the tourist viewpoints if you run over them. I always had to stop for a few seconds to enjoy it.
Another specialty of this place is “floor” running. There are narrow stripes of ground between 2 high rocks so you have only one option which way to go. This year had also one interesting highlight. It was already spring but suddenly in the middle of the race started a heavy snowfall so you couldn’t see more than 20 meters ahead of you.
Plus a delicious warm Bratwurst in the race arena made it even more enjoyable.
In case of winning I’d be interested in Easter4 or Wawel cup.

    • Just love those sand stones. Been at Saxbo a few times, and it can offer some really nice courses and terrain!

  31. My choice for the best course of this year is long distance on Russian championship 2017 in Krasnoarmeysk (17.09.2017). I think this map is the most difficult map in over the Russia. On this dictance i couldn’t run because nodody couldn’ run and navigate simultaneously. In addition at that time the heat prevented one from thinking about your distance.
    This distance: http://viewer.o-gps-center.ru/viewer/event/2833/

    • Really a great terrain – and the course also looks nice. Reminds me a bit of the Canadian Champs 2017 which Emily Kemp suggested – some of the same characteristics..

  32. – i’m not really a fan of orienteering in towns, but here i like it
    – Andalucia O-Meeting

  33. I’d like to suggest the stage 1 of OOcup 2017. A really nice middle distance course – a rough terrain, combination of “easy” and hard legs, it was very interesting.

Please reserve for me Latvian O week :-)

  34. Hi, i would like to suggest the Portugal O Meeting WRE Stage 3. https://events.loggator.com/qdBH1DXlrnfu46GT

In my opinion this course was very varied, with a mix of short and long legs, and easier or very difficult legs, putting the athletes through diferent challenges all the way to the finish.

I would like the Latvia O-week 2018 prize

  35. Carolina Delgado

I would like to suggest the Long Distance world cup race in Switzerland. https://www.tulospalvelu.fi/gps/20170929_WCF-L_M/
I didn´t run this competition but I followed and even stoped at home in front of my computer had a lot of trouble deciding what to do in some route choices… That was definitely a great challenge and a very good job from the course setter in my opinion! :)

I would like the MOC prize.

  36. Hi
i would suggest this race, stage one of O’Cerdanya 2017, in France near Font-Romeu
A really nice terrain in altitude, very physicall
    i didn’t run this race in M21E here:http://3drerun.worldofo.com/2d/index.php?idmult%5B%5D=-441791&idmult%5B%5D=-441979&idmult%5B%5D=-441792&idmult%5B%5D=-441809&idmult%5B%5D=-442557

, but in M35. Here’s my map and my track: http://doma.pop24.fr/show_map.php?user=Greg&map=415

i woud take the package for MOC 15th-25th february 2018

  37. Best fun all year was the third day of Wawel Cup in Poland.

    Depressions galore in glorious forest.

    http://app2.trackcourse.com/view/wawel-cup-36-e3-m18

    Ocad prize!

  38. I suggest WOC middle men cors.
There was the gear shifter very important.
    Prize ocad

  39. Last weekend this year’s MOV was organized. After five years, there was a classic long daytime race in the streets of Venice: https://image.ibb.co/goJe3R/SKM_C754e08052411340.jpg
I’d like to suggest it because of the amazing urban orienteering experience and the most complex and difficult-to-solve route choices you can’t find and set anywhere else in the world.

  40. Etapa III. of czech “Nice Holidays” in Sand stones area. Huge rocky towers in 1:7 500 scale – tricky labyrinth. One never knew how to reach a control. The reality probably more shocking than a map, see the picture.

    My course of W21 Elite:

    The most favourite MOC prize.

    • Thanks, Alena – wanted to go there this year, but didn’t manage to get it to fit in. Truly great orienteering!

  41. I suggest the Finnish sprint champs M21 A-final course: http://helsinginsuunnistajat.fi/harveli/cgi-bin/reitti.cgi?act=map&id=140#
I think it was a very good course because of the many different routechoises in an exciting sprint area
    Prize: andalcudia o meeting

    • Thanks, nice with another sprint suggestion – not that many of them. Course also loks nice & interesting!

  42. The Australian Middle Distance Championships M21E course at Hill End was rated excellent by all the respondents in our course setting survey. Aussie Czech orienteer Ondrej Pavlu said “This was one of the best middles I have ever run – very challenging terrain and an excellent course setting. I especially liked the technical start and finish. It surprised a lot of runners and many mistakes have been made… Nice to stretch the legs on the long leg too.” Not to mention the superb map, lovely weather and lots of kangaroos!

  43. Of courses I’ve run this year, my favourite was the WMOC sprint qualifier in New Zealand – lots of challenging route choices and plenty of intense detail to read, particularly in the second half. Always enjoy trying to solve the ‘you can’t get there from here’ sprint route choice problems…

    M45 part 1: http://archive.orienteering.org.nz/events/wmoc2017/sprint-qual/WMOC2017-Map-Sprint-Qual-A4-M45-1-Side-1.pdf
    M45 part 2: http://archive.orienteering.org.nz/events/wmoc2017/sprint-qual/WMOC2017-Map-Sprint-Qual-A4-M45-1-Side-2.pdf

(And I’ll back Andrew Lumsden’s comment – the Australian Middle Distance Championships course was the best one I ran in Australia this year).

  44. 1. My suggestion for the “Course of the year 2017″ will be Mens Sprint Final in the 1st WC round at Lohja. http://omaps.worldofo.com/?id=208200
I ran the course for training and few splits in front of the cameraman. It was challenging sprint for me to find the fastest routechoises even though I wasn’t running on the limit. I’m not a sprinter type, but I really liked the quality of the map and this technical course.
    2. –
    3. Best course I’ve seen this year will be Finnish Champs Middle distance Mens A-Final http://www.tulospalvelu.fi/gps/2017smkeskiH21/
I ran B-final and the terrain was same. It’s both fysically and technically demanding terrain, so some day I definitely going to run A-final course also.

    Prize: Andalucia O-Meeting 2018

    • Thanks a lot Tomi for both suggestions! Both have been mentioned earlier, but that just proves that those are very good choices!

  45. CEO 2017 Long Distance in Pinar Canencia map, class M35 (Spanish Championships 16.4.2017), course setter Per Emion.
    Link to Onedrive (PDF-file): ( https://1drv.ms/b/s!AuUf2ie5TFMBgU3GC-WuqDVbEzSB )

This course was definitely the best of 70 courses I ran this year. Very joyful orienteering from start to finish. The fun actually started already from CC, because it was over 300m climb to Start. But the view from starting area to the north was overwhelming.
Course itself included lots of route choice, because of slopes, contours, paths and some very detailed rocky areas with dense green vegetation. Another challenge was also the scale 1:15000, but it was OK for me.
Runnability was mostly excellent. And it is not everyday business to run 20 minutes downhill on a single leg, like I did on leg 7. (though it was a bad route choice from me)

Good competitions all together, well organized races and wonderful weather every day, thanks!

    Prize: Ocad or Andalucia.

  46. I would like to suggest the courses for WMOC Long Qual 2 (Temu Road) – maps at http://wmoc2017.com/results/#mapslongq2
Challenging contour orienteering virtually throughout – I was certainly not up to it, but I even heard some very experienced runners comment that it was impossible to read what was up and down on that map! Mine was W50:

Would love to go back there some day…
    Cheers,
    Kirsten.

  47. Thomas Steinthal

I know the rules only state foot-o-courses, but still I would like to point out the ME middle distance at this years World Champs in MTBO in Lithuania for it’s many challenging route choices that awarded the smart and fast thinking and decided the winner in the end. Furthermore, the competitions was held in heavy rain and muddy conditions which turned the whole area into a real battlefield.
    http://www.mtbo.lt/wmtboc-2017/#day1

    • Thanks for the suggestion, Thomas. At least you got some of us to click the link and look at the map, but I still won’t include it in the competition due to some issues with that earlier years.

  48. Andreas H Boesen

My favourites have been The Finnish and Canadian Sprint Champs M21. The finnish for serving a very demanding course in a difficult area, without being too difficult. You were able to find a flow, but still had a hard time on the routechoices. The canadian champs were so unexpected. From satellite it didn’t look very interesting, but the courseplanner did such a great job, and created maybe the best sprint possible for the area.

But since they are already suggested, I will pick another sprint course: “The Easter Sprint” M21 in Vöru, Estonia. It was a WRE event early in the season, but a good test for the forthcoming World Champs. The routechoices does not seem very demanding, but often it turned out to be important on the way to find the narrow gaps and choose the straightest possible route. The course had the start, finish and spectator passage all in a small arena, which definately added some intense running feeling to a small competition. For my own race, I was really challenged in the end by the fences, which comes out quite clear on the map, but in reality you can see straight through them.
I could only find one map of it in two parts:

  50. TMO Bedero 3.6.17, regional event in Italy close to the Swiss border. Category HAL.
A very nice course with a mix of interesting routechoices and technical slope orienteering in very relevant terrain for next years EOC.

  51. Hi,
I would like to nominate M21E course from Czech Cup near Opava. I personally run M21A but we have almost the same course (without one loop), so I can say, that it was really challenging to hold the direction in this green area. Many competitors said before the race that it will be boring, but after they run this race many of them change their mind (including me :)

    Link to map:
    https://goo.gl/7L9s85 (2DRerun)

If I win some prize I prefer OCAD or Wawel Cup or Bubo Cup, thank you :)

  52. I nominate Dunas da Tocha middle distance training from o-portugal sand dunes training package for 2017. Very demanding course in detailed terrain with low visibility. These kind of challenges are not exclusive to copetitions and that is why I chose a training instead.

    http://omaps.worldofo.com/?id=199030

    Prize: Ocad

  53. For me, the best orienteering experience of the year was Tatry Orienteering in Slovakia. The terrain is at the foot of the Tatry Mountains, almost totally flat. The area for day 3 is flooded after the snow melts in the mountains, so it was basically a wet, deep marsh with some scattered dry spots and low visibility. Most areas were extremely vague and it was very difficult to relocate after a mistake. Only 10 % of the M21E field managed the course under 10 min/km.

    Map: http://www.adam-chromy.cz/map-archive/show_map.php?user=chra&map=604

    Prize: Latvia O-Week

    • Thanks, Aron – this actually looks like a very interesting course & terrain combo. But the conditions doesn’t sound that nice – we’ve got enough wet marshes on my end of the world ….

  54. Five+Five Days of Sicily 2017 – week41
    Five Days of Sicily 2017 – week44
Course: Cretto di Burri (Old Gibellina) of Gibellina

Unique labyrinth orienteering in the old town of Gibellina after earthquake of 1968. Gibellina has since been rebuilt, about 20 km from the city’s original location.
The Cretto di Burri, also known as “The Great Cretto”, is a landscape artwork which undertaken by Alberto Burri in 1984.

  55. My choice for the best course of 2017 is the regional sprint championships in Graz, Austria. Even though the terrain and the map was well-known in advance by most of the runners, the course setter did a great job of using the terrain, offering a lot of route-choices, where the fastest choices weren’t easy to spot. Furthermore, the mix of terrain was highly interesting and made the sprint go fast very quick. Luckily, some strong athletes like Robert Merl, Tim Robertson and Gernot Kerschbaumer were present and used this this sprint to prepare for the Austrian National Championships one week later and for the World Cup Final.
    Map (Gernot Kerschbaumer): http://www.pan-kristianstad.nu/doma/show_map.php?user=Gernot&map=1041

  56. MOC Tour Italy 2017 – final stage
    Course: Savelli

I think it was interesting because you have to find the right technical and physical rhythm. Specially in a 1:2.500 map is not so easy. There were small route choice and a really high navigation difficulties.

    Prize: Easter4 2018. March 30th – April 2nd 2018

    Course Map M21: https://www.dropbox.com/s/nbo6pque32cv01v/prel%20courses.Bana%201rev.pdf?dl=0

  57. I would like to nominate ISF Long distance in Bosco della Ficuzza (Sicity-Italy). It was quite different from what we are used to in the other parts of Italy: thanks to its special scenario it was a beautiful experience on a different terrain. Some areas were completely white forest with super visibility and runnability was mostly excellent. On the other hand the vegetation was thicker, typical of the Mediterranean forests, which affected the speed.
It also has an interesting course, both physically and technically even though it was created for school championship.

    COURSE: http://www.trent-o.org/doma/show_map.php?user=stefano.raus&map=446

    PRIZE: Andalucia O-Meeting 2018 + Training package. February 26th – March 4th

    MOC Training Camp + MOC Championships, Catalunya. February 18th – 25th 2018

  58. My nomination is the second stage of Stockholm Indoor Cup 2017 in Fredrika Bremergymnasiet, Sweden.

The competition is unique with very tricky INDOOR orienteering and demanding for the runners. With over 1000 people in total this competition have become a real classic competition for Stockholmers and swedes. This year the competition even included a maze at the end of the course.

    Map – part 1:http://www.stockholmindoorcup.se/wp-content/uploads/2017/02/Banla%CC%88ggningEtapp2InnanKartbyte.Bana-1.jpg

    • Thank you – these indoor orienteering competitions are really interesting – and this course looks like it has a lot of challenges!

  59. I would like to nominate Men’s course at Viken Indoor Stage 2 in Sandviken the 19th of November 2017. This wasn’t a regular orienteering course but I think it did it even more intresting. In this competition the runners faced extremely technical orienteering and problem-solving on a high level, in a terrain that is totally new to the sport. Just making it to control 1 is a big challenge. Even the physical aspect comes in as the winners had a time of oven 44 minutes and I can promise that it was a spectacular event with a high fun-factor. After the race we got many good comments about the course and event!

    prize: Latvia O-week 2018. August 3rd – 12th 2018

The Belarussian Long Distance Championships M21E course. Difficult `classic` belarussian terrain. Course with big and interesting routechoces.I think this map is one of the most difficult map in over the Belarus.

  61. I would like to suggest POM day 1, middle distance:
    http://omaps.worldofo.com/index.php?id=200078
It was a very good course with a lot of both fast running and tricky orienteering. Some places needed very carefully orienteering to awoid the green areas. But most of all because the great decision to have the finish away from the arena to have a great course a possible. In this terrain it made a big difference and gave us more great orienteering. This is a thing the coursesetter can influence, and it was in my opinion a good decicion in a event like this.
It also didn’t have to many controls compare to whats “normal” on many middle distances in Portugal.

Prize: MOC Training Camp + MOC Championships

    • Thanks a lot for the suggestion, Olav. Also very good reasoning why this was a good course!

  62. My suggestions are:
    1) Moldavian National Orienteering Championship “Startul Primaverii” 2017, Middle distance – M21E
Nice course with a lot of control points. You must to be fully concentrated during all the course.

A combination of short and long legs with several decisive route choices.

    3) WOC in Estonia, Middle Men Distance

    Thank you!

    • Thanks, Vladimir. Nice to see some courses from Moldova. I decided to include the first of this as a nomination.

  63. Ida Marie Næss Bjørgul

I would like to suggest a sprint course in Monte Sant’Angelo from MOC camp. It is porobably one of the most difficult sprint courses i have run i 2017. It was a tough challange that required high consentration all the way. Even with slow speed it was a real challenge.

The map can be found in Martin Regborns map archive: http://hagabykartarkiv.se/show_map.php?user=martinregborn&map=1188

Prize: MOC camp and MOC championchip

  64. http://rg.mtfsz.hu/cgi-bin/reitti.cgi?act=map&id=915&kieli=
    Choose class/course > F18E
It was the Hungarian Long Distance Championship. I ran the F18E course. In my opinion the course was very well set, with a nice long leg. There was some tricky part with little route choices. Nice terrarin with good course. Similar to JWOC 2018.
I would like to win Latvia O-Week 2018.

  65. For me the best course I ran this year was the long distance at Eksili in Turkey. The thing I liked the most is that the terrain is very various and you never get bored. The course was challenging with some interesting route choices.
    Map: http://www.oryantiring.org.tr/rg/rg2/#25&course=1
Prize: MOC or Andalucia O meeting

    • Thanks, this looks like a nice course. Unfortunately I could not get the course image out of RG2, and I could not find the course anywhere else, so I did not mange to add it to the courses to be voted for, the suggestion coming in quite late…

  66. https://www.tulospalvelu.fi/gps/2017jukol1/

My suggestion is the first leg of Jukola relay. Jukola is such a big scale competition that there´s always some compromises in the courses from various reasons, but generally it was very well planned. It was excellent idea from course setters to put one very long leg without forking on first leg, leaving some difficult forest areas untouched for second leg runners in the darkest hours of short summer night.

    Prize: OCAD 12

    • Thanks, Anssi! Jukola has already been suggested, although another leg. Running the first leg myself, I think the second leg runners got more interesting challenges than the first leg runners, but that’s just personal opinion :)

  67. Hi,

My nomination is an indoor event. Sitting by a table, the minimum time to find a decent route is probably at least five minutes. In the terrain and under stress, even more for most of us. Really challenging and pushing the spatial skills to the limit.
    http://omaps.worldofo.com/index.php?id=198302

    • Thanks, Jørgen! The Stockholm indoor cup has already been suggested – very nice concept!

  68. I suggest Lipica Open Long distance in Veliki dol in Slovenia. The race was very tough and technical: in this typical karst terrain, with many rocks and stone walls, it was always difficult to make the right and fastest routechoices.

    COURSE: http://www.lipicaopen.com/2017/03/15/lipica-open-2017-is-over-see-you-in-2018/#jp-carousel-766
    PRIZE: Andalucia O-Meeting 2018 + Training package. February 26th – March 4th

  69. I would like to suggest stage 3 at O-ringen, a shortened long distance in really wild terrain with many cliffs in Värmland close to Norway. The terrain was tough with soft ground but nice visibility! The route choice legs were really difficult and very decisive, so a good choice and a good execution was very important. This was how a long distance should be, with difficult route choices and also challenging to find the controls directly. I ran H20E but would like to nominate the H21E-course because it looks even more varied than our course with some different, flatter terrain in the beginning.

    Map: http://sno.nu/doma/show_map.php?user=IvarLundanes&map=1995

As an extra I would like to give a plus to the course setter of Aprilskämtet, a middle distance in what would look as rather boring close to town-terrain with lots of fields and tracks, but the course setter made the best out of it and created a course with some route choice challenges and difficult control points. A real challenge to optimise your race on such a course!
    Map: http://vagval.snattringesk.se/show_map.php?user=Simon+Hector&map=673

  70. All courses from the high level events were already nominated, so maybe there is a time for some more funny suggestions. Some sandstone terrains can have two different levels. You can stay on top, easily run on the rocks and jump over the passages (how it is usually mapped), but you can also go down to the passages and discover a very different world of cold air, darkness, spiders and caves. This map was specially mapped to display this “lower level”, how the passages looks like if you are down there. In September we organized there “Claustroph-O”. Very ultimate course with winning time more than 17 minutes per kilometer and with every control hidden in dark “cave”. I ran just like a pre-runner and participated in organization, but still it was a great fun! Map: http://tur.cz/maps/map_images/490.blank.jpg

    • Thanks, Dann – just love these kind of terrains – and it looks like the course setter was really creative here!

It’s too late, but I’ll give it a try anyway.

I would like to nominate H21 stage 1 middle distance from Midnattsolgaloppen this year. A varied course, with several different terrain types which challenges the runner to adjust the running speed several times during the race.

  72. Relays seems to be underrepresent… So, Finnish Championship in Relays. For example, H21 (men)
Wide variations in routechoices and forking worked.

I would like to nominate this years Mini KM as the course of the year. It was a forest sprint in a tricky forest with a lot of route choices.

I’ll suggest 10mila 4th leg “Långa natten”. Very tough start – a steep hill to the starting point. From there a bit over 4 km to the 1. control without any tracks or paths in a rather undulating terrain. Varied orienteering on the next part of the course, and still interesting and difficult orienteering after arena passage (at approx. 2/3 of the course).

    • Thanks, Christian. 10Mila has already been suggested, so I think there is not room for more than one leg from 10Mila…

  76. I think you should withdraw the map from Egypt from the competition. The cartographers’ work as well as their plane tickets have not been paid yet but this map has been confiscated by EA, Damir Gobec. You do not have to encourage such attitudes

  77. I think Norwegian Championship Long 2017 seems to be very nice course and terrain. There is confusing and challenging long legs and a very well concentration and physical condition is needed to win the race. I liked leg 7-8 too much; it has different alternatives and is complicated.
