[First woman starts 10:56, last woman 13:16, first man 13:12, last man 15:46 (all times CET, local time one hour later) #WOC2018].  Tove Alexandersson is again the main favourite in the women’s race – the men’s race is more open with 10-15 runners who can win on a good day.

Read on for a preview of the favourites for WOC 2018 Middle, but first an introduction to the Middle distance.

Key information about WOC 2018 Middle

oldmiddle

The forest races at the World Orienteering championships 2018 start with the Middle distance Tuesday August 7th and continue with Relay Thursday and Long Saturday. The terrain for all of the forest races is relatively green and partly with reduced visibility. The middle distance is expected to be hilly, but with flat parts close to the river – see part of the old map above.

Men: Lundanes and the Swiss favourites – many potential winners

The WOC Middle is an open race in the men’s class with 6 different winners the last 6 years – Thierry Gueorgiou (2017), Matthias Kyburz (2016), Daniel Hubmann (2015), Olav Lundanes (2014), Leonid Novikov (2013) and Edgars Bertuks (2012). All 6 winners are present at the WOC 2018 Middle, but only five of them are on the start since last year’s winner Thierry Gueorgiou is now coach for the Swedish team. Below are the Top 10 from last years WOC and this years EOC. Of these all are on the start except Johan Runesson, Valentin Novikov, Jonas Egger and Gueorgiou.

Olav Lundanes (Norway) has dominated the WOC Long distance, but has only won the WOC Middle distance once, back in 2014 in Italy. Lundanes’ big goal is to take “the double”, winning both the Long and Middle in the same WOC. This year Lundanes has prepared well for both Long and Middle, and definitely has the chance to reach his goal, although he is a bigger favourite on the Long than on the Middle. He performed very well on the test races in Latvia, and was close to the Swiss on their homeground at EOC in Switzerland this May.

The two Swiss runners Daniel Hubmann and Matthias Kyburz are probably the biggest rivals for Lundanes. Hubmann won the WOC Middle back in 2015, and took Bronze in 2016. Kyburz won the WOC Middle in 2016 and won the EOC Middle earlier this year. The terrain in the Middle should fit the Swiss runners well – green terrain with limited visibility and runnability requires some of the same skills which are needed in typical Swiss terrain. This opens up for Hubmann and Kyburz, but also for the two other Swiss, Fabian Hertner who took silver at WOC Middle last year and Florian Howald who took silver at EOC Middle this year.

The two Swiss runners Daniel Hubmann and Matthias Kyburz are probably the biggest rivals for Lundanes.

Two of the Swedes on start deserve to be mentioned among the Gold favourites: Gustav Bergman and Albin Ridefelt. Bergman runs incredible middle distance races when he is in shape, but has not managed to get a top result at WOC yet. Ridefelt can also be a magician on the middle distance at his best days. Also count in Magne Dæhli (Norway) among the favourites, he has four Top 10 results from WOC Middle.

Two other interesting runners are the Ukrainians Oleksandr Kratov and Ruslan Glibov. Kratov took bronze at WOC last year and although he has not shown top results so far this year, Kratov has shown that he can peak his shape and get out everything at WOC. The terrain is maybe not technical enough for Kratov, but it will be interesting to see what he can manage here. Glibov was 5th at EOC Middle, and the Latvian terrain should suit the Ukrainian even better. Can WOC 2018 Middle become the big breakthrough for Ruslan Glibov?

Can WOC 2018 Middle become the big breakthrough for Ruslan Glibov?

Finally Leonid Novikov (Russia) is a man to look out for. Novikov took silver at WOC 2017 Long and won the WOC Middle back in 2013. The terrain should again suit Novikov well, and if the Russian is in shape, he could be a bit threat to the other runners.

leonidnovikov_WOC2017Long 2_1200

Other outsiders: Lucas Basset (France) – the terrain might not be technical enough, but the medalist from WOC 2015 Middle is still going strong; the Sild brothers (Estonia)- can they take another step up from the Estonia WOC last year?; Eskil Kinneberg (Norway) – can run on medal-level on his best days. Edgars Bertuks has had injury trouble and is probably not strong enough for a medal at WOC, even if it is on homeground.

WoO’s tip:

1. Olav Lundanes
2. Matthias Kyburz
3. Daniel Hubmann

Main outsiders:  Gustav Bergman, Fabian Hertner, Ruslan Glibov, Oleksandr Kratov.

Women: Alexandersson goes for three in a row!

WOC Middle for women has had Swedish winners the last four years – first two wins by Annika Billstam (now retired), then two wins by Tove Alexandersson. Tove Alexandersson.  Below are the Top 10 from last years WOC and this years EOC. Of these several runners are not on the start; Venla Harju, Simona Aebersold, Emily Kemp, Svetlana Mironova, Nadiya Volynska, Sofia Haajanen,

Tove Alexandersson (Sweden) has won both the Long and Middle distance at the World Orienteering Championships two years in a row – in very different terrain types. Alexandersson is the big favourite for the Middle distance this year as well. If Alexandersson is in normal shape and makes a good race, nobody is able to beat her – that is nice to know in order to use enough time for the orienteering.

Russia’s Natalia Gemperle took Bronze at WOC Middle in 2016, but managed only a 7th place last year in Tallin. Gemperle has increased her level and stability the last seasons, and could be ready for her first individual WOC Gold medal if Alexandersson does not have a perfect day.

Norway’s Marianne Andersen is a very interesting start. After struggling for years with injuries she came back to top level with a silver medal at WOC Middle last year in Estonia. Andersen has also showed excellent shape this year – including a win at the test races organized in Latvia.

Marika Teini (Finland) took a surprise win at the European Championships Middle earlier this year, and must thus be counted among the absolute medal favourites. Tatyana Riabkina (Russia) is back on track this year with a 4th place at EOC in Switzerland. The Lativan terrain could fit her even better.  Also note that Helena Bergman (Sweden), the WOC middle distance winner from back in 2012, is on the startline.
