WOC 2019 Long Men: BIG GPS analysis

WOC2019M_04B_1200

Kasper Fosser (NOR) won his silver medal on the two long legs – winning both with nearly half a minute. Olav Lundanes (NOR) won his gold medal due to his fast finish – from the 11th control to the finish, the Norwegian 6 times WOC Gold medalist was 1:51 faster than anybody else, and 2:52 ahead of Fosser.

Read on for an analysis of the winners and losers of the men’s race at the World Orienteering Championships Long. See the “Maps and Results”-article for the full course and results – as a reminder here are top 10 in the finish:

1 Olav Lundanes Norway 1:30:09 5:25
2 Kasper Fosser Norway 1:31:48 +1:39 5:31
3 Daniel Hubmann Switzerland 1:33:07 +2:58 5:35
4 Matthias Kyburz Switzerland 1:33:10 +3:01 5:36
5 Ruslan Glibov Ukraine 1:33:24 +3:15 5:36
6 Magne Daehli Norway 1:35:37 +5:28 5:44
7 Vojtech Kral Czech Republic 1:36:03 +5:54 5:46
8 Albin Ridefelt Sweden 1:36:11 +6:02 5:47
9 Gernot Ymsen Austria 1:36:22 +6:13 5:47
10 Frederic Tranchand France 1:36:28 +6:19 5:48

When taking out the two long legs (3-4 and 10-11), Fosser would have been 4th:

1. Olav Lundanes Norway 55:35 (+0:00) Total:
90:09 (1)
2. Ruslan Glibov Ukraine 57:14 (+1:39) Total:
93:24 (5)
3. Daniel Hubmann Switzerland 57:58 (+2:23) Total:
93:07 (3)
4. Kasper Fosser Norway 58:44 (+3:09) Total:
91:48 (2)
5. Magne Daehli Norway 58:49 (+3:14) Total:
95:37 (6)

Thus it is clear that Ruslan Glebov was very close to repeating his WOC Long medal from 2018 – but the bad long leg to control 11 (lost 1:45 to Fosser) cost him a medal this time around. Below you will find an analysis of the most important legs, followed by a full set of analysis illustrations and split times leg-by-leg throughout the course.

Leg 3-4: Long leg

The first decisive leg in the race was the long leg from control 3 to 4:

WOC2019M_04C_1200

On leg 3-4 you could either run left of the forbidden area (bad!) or right (generally good). Left might seem tempting if you don’t look at the complete leg due to easy road running at the start of the leg, but if you move your focus further towards the 4th control you see that you have to climb more and run in rougher terrain than going right. Relatively few of the top runners took the wrong routechoices (going left or straight) – and the ones who did lost a lot of time. The top runner who did run left lost a lot of time: Magne Dæhli lost 2:20, Martin Hubmann and Leonid Novikov nearly 3 minutes – Tsvetkov even more. Note that the women’s leg was probably better balanced and a better leg, but still the men’s leg did separate the runners.

There are two main variants to the right which are both good: Either going far right on the road with around than 2.5 km road running like Fosser did (averaging 3:13 min/km on the road), which is the fastest, or to go a bit more straight through the terrain with less road running like Lundanes/Bergman did. You don’t lose much using the Bergman/Lundanes approach – actually Bergman has the second best leg time on this leg.

Here is an illustration with one color for each routechoice. Runners in green and purple take a wrong routechoice. Thus in the end this leg was not very decisive for the race, although we “lost” pre-race favourite Dæhli (who also lost time later in the course) and outsiders Martin Hubmann and Leonid Novikov from the medal battle.

Leg 8-9: Tricky control for Bergman and Kyburz

Quite a few runners lost  a lot of time at control 5, including Emil Svensk who was fighting for the lead in the competition up to this point but made a big mistake at control 5. The next tricky control for the top runners was control 9. This was the third control in detailed terrain (control 7, 8 and 9), and an area where we suspected somebody would do mistakes ahead of the race. It turned out that the two “unlucky” top runners losing time here were Matthias Kyburz and Gustav Bergman.

At this point in the race Gustav Bergman was up in the medal battle,  in second place 17 second behind Fosser. Bergman’s mistake cost him 1:30 while Kyburz managed to keep the timeloss down to half a minute. For Kyburz this is one of the places where he lost the bronze medal to Daniel Hubmann (he was only 3 second away from bronze in the end), but he is still ahead of Hubmann at this point of the course. For Bergman this was were his victory chances disappeared – although he lost even more on the long leg to 11 (see further down).

Leg 10-11: Decisive long leg

There were no big time differences among the top runners to control 10, but the long leg to control 11 proved to be very decisive:

WOC2019M_11C_1200

There are three main alternatives here:

  • Alternative one is to run to the right out of the control (blue), and use the road as much as possible (route of Fosser who wins the leg with 27 seconds). Here you don’t have to take much climb – actually you run downhill on road/path much of the leg and can really set up high speed.
  • The second alternative is to run straight (red). Lundanes shows that it is possible to run a good time straight (3rd best leg time, loses 42 seconds to Fosser), but in reality this is probably more than a minute slower than Fosser’s route as Lundanes now has got up his speed, and you really have to know how to do the micro-routechoices right in this terrain to run well (see Lundanes vs Fosser comparison below). Other runners who run straight lose a lot of time. The second fastest time straight is Gustav Bergman’s – losing 3:17 to Fosser (and now really out of the battle). Tsvetkov and Novikov again take the wrong choice, running straight and losing 6 and 8 minutes.
  • The third main alternative is a route to the left (orange). This is again a slow route – longer than right and with lots of climb. None of the top runners choose this option.
  • There is also an alternative that mixes the first two alternatives (green) – starting out straight and then running out towards the road. This gives you some more climb and less road running. Daniel Hubmann runs this alternative and loses 1:19 to Fosser. It is probably somewhat slower than to the right, but not a very bad choices.
  • Glebov (purple) also mixes he first two alternatives, but waits longer until he runs out to the road. This is even slower than Hubmann’s alternative, and Glebov loses 1:45 and in practice the bronze medal (the Ukrainian is less than 20 seconds from bronze in the end).

Here are the routes of the top runners only compared:

leg_11_.png (5)_1600

And a comparison Fosser vs Lundanes:

leg_11_.png (6)_1600

At this point in the race Fosser has his biggest lead in the competition, 1:13 ahead of Lundanes. Lundanes has already started to run faster than Fosser, but with the poorer routechoice he loses time instead of gaining time. Matthias Kyburz also still has a clear bronze medal with more than 1 minute margin to Daniel Hubmann.

Leg 12-13: Kyburz loses time

Several runners lost time on leg 11-12, but leg 12-13 is even more important for the battle for the medals. Here Matthias Kyburz takes a crucial routechoice (around to the right) where he lost 35 seconds to Daniel Hubmann, putting Hubmann into the battle for bronze for real:

WOC2019M_13A_1200

Leg 13-14: Small TV-control miss by Fosser

Leg 14 is where Lundanes takes over the lead from Fosser. A small TV-control miss by Fosser, nearly not even visible on the GPS:

WOC2019M_14A_1200

Here Lundanes takes over the lead – a four second lead, and just extends it from here to the finish. Matthias Kyburz is still in 3rd with 13 seconds down to Daniel Hubmann. The standings after leg 14 and leg times for control 14:

Leg 15-16: Lundanes takes over for real

On the leg to control 16 Lundanes takes over the lead for real. Here Fosser takes the slower route straight, losing 35 seconds to Lundanes who runs around to the left.

WOC2019M_16B_1200

Leg 20: Hubmann decides the battle for bronze

Leg 20 is the last decisive leg on the course. Here Daniel Hubmann decides the battle for bronze. This is actually a routechoice leg where you can lose time by going right, but it is not the routechoice that is the problem for Kyburz – just some poorer micro routechoices where Hubmann steals the necessary seconds to get ahead.

You Wrote “Note that the women’s leg was probably better balanced and a better leg”. I do not agree that a route choice leg should be balanced. In my opinion there should be a difference between the different route choices. Finding the right route choice should give you an advantage. Or put the other way choosing a poor route choice should also lead to a loss of time.

I agree with BOM, both long legs from the first TV control is perfectly balanced. Upon close inspection it can be seen from the map that left is best for the women and right for the men. Still it can be difficult to see this in competition speed, several runners including many runners with medal aspirations before start chooses wrongly. Excellent job by the course setters!

    • It should definitely not be balanced in a way where the routes are equal in time, but in a way were it is not too clear at a quick glance which route is best. For the men’s leg I couldn’t see any other realistic alternatives than right on the road when seeing this leg the first time. I really had to work hard to draw another alternative than to the right on the road ahead of the competition. And in the competition less than 10% of the runners chose something else than to the right of the forbidden area.

For the women the spread was a lot larger, and still there were significant time differences. I think it was simply too easy to see the best alternative for the men – to the right on the road is the first place you look, to the left of the forbidden area is complex. I would have rather balanced the leg like for the women, where left (which is more difficult to see) is faster. Also the second long leg has better spread. But still some runners chose left on the men’s, so it was better than i feared when I first saw it.

    • I don’t agree with Bernt at all. A route choice is not simply a route choice, because e.g. it is a long leg. The fastest route on a good route choice should never be obvious, even after the course. Otherwise, in my opinion, e.g. this “long leg” would just be a “fake route choice”, meaning no route choice. There would be just one route, the – after you studied it in a calm environment – obviously fastest one.

Furthermore, in my eyes, it is absolutely forbidden, that a course planer makes long legs, where the difference in running time between different choices are not visible on the map. That means, after a thorough analysis, in a calm environment, it must be clear, why one route is faster than another one. If one route choice is much slower, e.g. because of runnability, without that beeing clear on the map, this is a bad long leg, or rather kind of a betrayal of the runner.

A perfect route choice is, in my eyes, a balanced one. Otherwise it is not a route “choice”, but simply a long leg. The idea of a real choice, must be a choice (sic!), and not simply to find the one and only fastest route (that would be absolutely obvious, if you only had enough time to look at it).

In a perfect world, balanced means, that the different routes are more or less equal, if a runner chooses the route according to his strenghts. Equal doesn’t mean obvious, so.
If there is e.g. a “classic” route choice with a big hill: 1. “right” route; longer, on the street. 2. “left” route; shorter, through the forest, and 3. the shortest route crossing the hill; then a fast “street runner” should be more or less be equally fast on route 1, as a “fast uphill runner” on route 3. (But not vice versa!).

In addition, a perfect route choice is not solved “at once”. Even after you, as a runner, took the “big” decision e.g. of “right-left-direct”, you should have further problems on your choice, force you to take further desicions after the “big” decision.

Anyway, I liked the classic WOC 19, and wished I had the endurance to run such courses.

IMHO, for a good route choice leg:
there should be a “best” route (i.e. not just a choice of running left or right around two sides of a square)
the “best” route should not be immediately obvious (there should be some mental challenge in evaluating the options)
the “best” route should not be the same for everyone (e.g. it might be better for a weaker navigator to take a safer, longer route on paths whereas a stronger navigator is better off going straight)
everything you need to make the decision as to what’s best for you should be on the map
and even once you’ve made your choice there should be some challenges in execution.

When I saw the Men’s course I didn’t think the leg to control 4 was that great: it seemed to me that the right hand route round the road was too obviously the best (2nd point above) and almost certainly the best for everyone (3rd point above) – the left route was horrible and Lundanes’s route saved less than 100m over Kyburz at the cost of a lot more terrain running … but a lot of very good orienteers got it wrong so i guess it was better than I thought!

Agree with several of the above that the best route choice to some extent depend on the runners and their individual strengths/weakness.

According to the course planners estimates Lundanes route choice would be best for the runners strong in Nordic terrain, while the stronger road runners would benefit form the right route choice. So probably several of the Swedish and Finnish runners lost time by taking the road.

We also expected that runners from the smaller nations would opt for the road/path route choices as much as possible. So looking at all runners when commenting on whether a route choic is balanced or not will probably skew the result quite a bit. One should probably disregard the first 30-40 runners.

Thanks for analysis! A small correction you forget that Emil Svensk was among the runners that did large mistakes to the fifth control!

    • Thanks, I updated that now. I thought about Svensk, but didn’t think about him as one of the top runners. But of course he was among the very best before the mistake, and could very well have gotten an excellent result without this start of the competition.
