Route To O-Season 2020: Day 74

Slovenia is known for its tricky karst terrain – but in today’s leg in Route to O-Season we take a look at a very different Slovenian terrain. This terrain contains of steep slopes which invite to some nice routechoice challenges. Today’s leg is the 17th leg in the SEEOC (South East European Orienteering Championships) Long and Cerkno Cup 2018.

Thanks a lot to John Chandler for the tip about SEEOC 2018! The leg is as usually first provided without routes – you may take a look at it and think about how you would attack this leg (if the image is too small, you may click on it to get it larger):

Location

You find other maps from the area in omaps.worldofo.com here. See also latest additions in 3DRerun from this area in order to learn more about this terrain type.

Webroute

Next you can draw your own route using the ‘Webroute’ below. Think through how you would attack this leg, and draw the route you would have made. Some comments about why you would choose a certain route are always nice for the other readers.

Then you can take a look at how the runners have solved this leg below. As a runner it is not so tempting to lose altitude, so many runners tended to stay up in the slope instead of taking the faster route down to the right. The problem with staying in the slope is that there is no good path all the way, and you still have to do a lot of climbing. If you choose to go left there is even more climb. What do you think?

Density map

See below for a density map of some of the ones who have drawn their routes so far (available during the day when some readers have drawn their route).

Route Choice Challenges while waiting for the real action: With the upcoming orienteering season indefinitely on hold in large parts of the the world due to COVID-19, regular orienteering route choice challenges may be one way to make sure those orienteering skills don’t get completely rusty. I’ll try to keep these coming daily, but need help from all of you out there to keep them coming and to keep up a certain quality.

Tips on good route choice challenges – either from races/trainings (even cancelled ones) or theoretical ones with accompanying analysis – are very welcome (please e-mail to jan@kocbach.net).

Not all legs are taken for the interesting routechoice alternatives – some are also taken because the map is interesting – or because it is not straightforward to see what to do on a certain leg. Any comments are welcome – especially if you ran the event chosen for todays leg!

  1. “… in today’s leg in Route to Christmas …” ?

    Starting early this year?

Do the Oceania Long 2019 11-12 leg at Kangaroo crossing. (Just a suggestion).

Tim Robertson is simply faster than all the rest, but there is just 20 sec between the two BUL runners. This leg where the fastest route is the most direct but with a very heavy climb into the control you should also take a look at the running speed to the next control. Teodor Yordanov would have been very fresh and rested while Apostol who was 22 sec faster must have been tired by the time he punched.

This particular issue was one of the key findings in Eystein Weltzien’s Master thesis.

Compared with the total race, this leg was probably the best Teodor he ran since he was 22 min behind Tim R in the end. I.e. I believe that for almost all orienteers the best route would have been the one taken by Teodor!

Nice that your keeping this up! Still looking for more route-choice suggestions, the recent Trondheim Open event by Wing last Saturday in well-known Estenstadmarka had several interesting route-choice legs. E.g., legs 2 & 9, but also on the shorter legs to 7 & 11 several good runners lost significant time due to incorrect choices (in addition to bad leg execution). So in case new races are interesting check out https://www.livelox.com/Viewer/Trondheim-open-/H-17-?classId=278663
