Route to Christmas: Day 13 2022

Today’s leg in Route to Christmas 2022 is a real long distance forest leg again – this time from the men’s class in the Swedish Champs Long distance. Thanks a lot to Agnar Reolen and Georgi for the tip to consider this course! There were several interesting legs here, but I found leg 19 the most interesting and chose that for Route to Christmas.

The leg is as usually first provided without routes – you may take a look at it and think about how you would attack this leg (if the image is too small, you may click on it to get it larger):

Location

You find other maps from the area in omaps.worldofo.com here. See also latest additions in 3DRerun from this area in order to learn more about this terrain type.

Webroute

Next you can draw your own route using the ‘Webroute’ below. Think through how you would attack this leg, and draw the route you would have made. Some comments about why you would choose a certain route are always nice for the other readers.

Then you can take a look at how the runners have solved this leg below.

With the three fastest runners, Gustav Bergman, Emil Svensk and Simon Hector running fastest on the leg and taking approximately the same route, this seems like it is clearly the fastest route on the lag. However, looking more closely on the route times, it is evident that several routes were run around 1:10 to 1:30 slower than Bergman, but still only 20-40 seconds slower than Svensk and nearly at the same speed as Hector. Thus, even if Bergman’s route seems to be clearly the fastest the time loss on one of the other routes is not that large as long as you execute the leg in a good way. And if you use 30-40 seconds to decide on the route, or if you get uncertain on the way and start reading all the other alternatives instead of reading the map where you actually are, this may cost you more time than you gained by taking the fastest route ….

Route to Christmas series

The Route to Christmas series is a pre-Christmas tradition at World of O – giving the readers the opportunity to do one Route Choice Challenge each day from December 1st until December 24th. If you have got any good legs in GPSSeuranta, 3DRerun or Livelox from 2022-competitions, or old forgotten ones which are still interesting, please email me the link at Jan@Kocbach.net, and I’ll consider including it in Route to Christmas if it looks good. Route to Christmas will not be interesting if YOU don’t contribute.

Not all legs are taken for the interesting routechoice alternatives – some are also taken because the map is interesting – or because it is not straightforward to see what to do on a certain leg. Any comments are welcome – especially if you ran the event chosen for todays leg!

This was in general an excellent challenging course but one mistake was the lack of refreshment points. Personally, I was quite certain the route to the right was slower but still chose it solely for catching some sport drinks to survive the last part of the race (winning time was 15 mins above estimated).
