The sprint relay and the knock out sprint are certainly more entertaining for spectators. The coverage of the relay on Swiss TV yesterday was quite entertaining, with many cameras, cameramen and drones.

I agree with you Tom. For me, the essence of orienteering is to navigate in wild nature. And it is understandable that many of the top orienteer avoid these quite boring urban races (preferring trail running for example). Respect to them. Unfortunately, the IOF bad decisions have consequences on the national calendars as well, with more and more races in the sprint format, travelling for hours for a 15 minute race in a city.

Another aspect I don’t get is why IOF bans our Russian orienteer friends and not the athletes from other countries whose governments don’t behave better than Russia’s.

All this is sad for our great sport.

This is, of course, just my personal opinion, but World Cup competitions used to be far more interesting and exciting. Now, with the focus shifting mainly to sprint events, they have simply become boring. In its attempt to make orienteering an Olympic sport by emphasizing urban sprints, the IOF is ruining the sport we love!
