In a real interval start event it would be even worse, since later starters would be pretty much certain to meet several competitors on the hike up to the start. :-(
They could have avoided this particular problem by marking a route to the start via the housing area, but with the selected map issue point, they obviously didn’t do so.

Move the control south-east to the stream junction and it makes the decision more difficult.
