I agree that going around to the left on the road should be approximately equal (at least) to Rudnaya’s route. Looking at the speed on the road for Rudnaya compared to Hirvonen, Rudnaya seems to be around 4:00 min/km elsewhere in the course while Hirvonen is around 4:45 min/km for the 4(!) km on road/big path on this leg. This corresponds to around 3 minutes difference, which is the difference between Rudnaya and Hirvonen on the leg. So similar times should at least be possible (but it is definitely boring :)

Thank you Jagge! That did at the very least confirm my prediction that female runners can run even further around on flat paths & roads than what the best men can do.

Terje, I believe left must ahve been was really good. I compared Rudnaja and Hirvonen with speed hadicap factor based on their pace elsewhere (but Rudnaja still winning course with 1 min) and left ended up being 1 minute faster.

Going all the way to the left was indeed very far, but do you have a better number for how much it cost? I.e. there were few runners taking that option and if none of them were strong runners it is hard to know for sure! How much did they lose on this leg compared to an average over the rest of the course?
It looks to be about 1.7 times longer than going straight, the difference is less compared with the fastest routes to the right?
