The cliffs are drawn where it is too steep and dangerous to pass, but the maps is very accurate so it is about navigating in between the cliffs and finding a good line in the terrain (crossing the gullies at a right place).
I think for most orienteers the right route by the paths is the safest solution but for some elite orienteers (who were able to execute the route well), the (slightly) left route was the fastest option.
