What was the best orienteering course of 2024? World Champs middle distance in Switzerland won in 2023, Pomeranian Sprint Cup won in 2022, WOC Long distance won in 2021, the Norwegian World Champs selection race long distance won in 2019, the World Cup Final Middle in Czech Republic won in 2018 and the World Champs middle distance in Estonia won in 2017.
Other winners are a spectacular sprint between boulders and old buildings in Portugal in 2013 and some great technical orienteering at Portugal O-Meeting in 2012. Who do you think should win in 2024?
The search for the orienteering course of the year is always fun and interesting – with many nice courses and maps surfacing! The rules are simple: Suggest a course from a competition or training in 2024, and state the reason why you think this course deserves to be “The course of the Year 2024″. The best among all the suggestions will be chosen – and there will be a voting process among the readers of “World of O” in order to name “The course of the Year 2024″. We will also identify the best course in each category: Sprint, Middle and Long.
And please state the reason for your suggestion – that’s where the fun & the passion for orienteering comes in! YOU are the one to decide who takes the prestigious top spot this year- first by submitting suggestions – and then by voting.
Suggestions are submitted as a comment to this post – including link to the map (this is important – I am doubly happy if the link goes to omaps.worldofo.com) with course in a quality which is good enough for the readers to understand the course and the challenges involved.
Please add information about location/date if that is not clear from the link provided. Also include which sponsor prize you are interested in (check them out!) if you win – please do check out the sponsor prizes and choose one, it is much nicer to win something you really want!
PS! Suggestions for Route to Christmas are also welcome; a combined suggestion doubly so!
More than 7000 Euro worth of prizes for YOU
Prizes from sponsors make it more fun to be in on the suggestions and voting. This year we again have some great sponsors and prizes – with a total value of more than 7000 Euro! We hope this means many good suggestions & a lot of interactivity from YOU! See all details about the sponsors & prizes below! Use the comments below, and submit either
- The course which in your opinion is the best course you run in 2024 yourself!
- The best course you set this year as a course-setter.
- The overall best course you have seen/heard about in 2024
Most course-setters surely have to make some compromises, so finding the perfect one is probably not possible. Still, it is interesting to see which is the best course you run or set in 2024!
Our sponsors have contributed a fantastic selection of prizes. These include entry packages for the 5 Days Madonna di Campiglio in Italy, 5+5 Days Sardinia, the 57th Kainuu Orienteering Week in Finland, and the MOC Camp in Italy. From Portugal, we have prizes for the ABOM 2025 and LIOM 2025, while Slovenia offers packages for the Lipica Open and the Easter 4 competition. There are also entries for the OOCup (Slovenia/Italy), the Sudety Cup in Poland, and the Vienna Orienteering Challenge in Austria. Special family-friendly prizes include the Kapa 3-Days event in Latvia. Additional offerings include a 3-year license for OCAD Orienteering Software and personal coaching sessions with the Confident Orienteering package.
Starting point
To provide you with a starting point, I’ve included the legs featured in Route to Christmas so far this year. Do any of these courses deserve a nomination for Orienteering Course of 2024?
Rules
The following rules are given for “The course of the Year 2024″.
- The course must have been run in competition or training in 2024
- Suggestions are submitted as a comment to this post – including link to the map (this is important!) with course in a quality which is good enough for the readers to understand the course and the challenges involved. Please add information about location/date if that is not clear from the link provided. Also include which sponsor prize you are interested in if you win (please do check out the sponsor prizes and choose one, it is much nicer to win something you really want!).
- You must give a reason for why you think this course deserves to be named “The course of the Year 2024″ (or why it is the best course you run/set this year). All reasons are valid. Examples can for example be “varied orienteering challenges”, “extremely technical orienteering”, “high fun-factor”, “fantastic map”, “spectacular orienteering”, “fantastic nature” – a combination of these – or a totally different reason. To get all the way to the top you should probably have a combination of reasons…
- The course may be any foot-orienteering discipline – e.g. a long distance, a middle distance, a sprint distance. It may also be a technical training course – like e.g. a corridor orienteering exercise.
- There will be a voting process among the readers of “World of O” in order to name “The course of the year 2024″. This is your second chance to win sponsor prizes!

Definitely EOC Men’s long distance – long distance to my mind is still the most classical type of orienteering, and this year’s most important long distance race was in EOC where you could compare all the best in the world. It had interesting tetrain and map, with lots of route choices, with long legs and short ones, with compass legs and map reading legs.
Map – https://omaps.worldofo.com/?id=358224
Prize: Kāpa 3-days
Thanks, Renars! First suggestion this year – and also a good one! I thought the long one back was maybe a bit too obvious, but quite a few went into the course-setters trap…
I’d like to suggest M21E stage 3 of this year’s Sudety Cup (https://www.livelox.com/Viewer/Sudety-Cup-2024-Etap-03/M21E?classId=809055&tab=player), extremely difficult (both physically and technically) but extremely fun downhill middle above an alpine resort near the Polish-Czech border. The chairlift to the start with amazing views was just a cherry on top…
Prize: ABOM
Thanks a lot, Vojtech! Looks quite tough!
As to me this year the winner could be the French selection races for EOC long distance.
It was very demanding course in rugged and diverse terrain and in combination of hot weather it was a big challenge for participants.
Map: https://omaps.worldofo.com/?id=357239
Prize: ABOM 2025
Thanks, Kamil – OOCup held in the same terrain the same day was definitely one of my highlight of the year as well!
NM Long Distance, near Trondheim what all orienteering courses should aspire to be:
https://omaps.worldofo.com/index.php?id=359166
OCAD please
Thanks a lot, Cha! I’ll check this one out for Route to Christmas as well!
For me Cansiglio OMeeting Day3 WRE MElite; one more great performance as a course planner for this young but so talented Italian course planner. Same map as WC 2021, different race concept and so various legs but, as always, same result: one more high level event! Swiss Team set there the selection races for EOC, great reward for this organization.
Middle Distance Race should be like this one!
MAP : https://www.livelox.com/Viewer/Cansiglio-Orienteering-Meeting-Stage-3/M21E?classId=797120&tab=player
Prize: all
Thanks a lot, this really looked like an interesting course!
I suggest World Cup 2 sprint in Genova Voltri! Fun courses and great venue! A mix between park and city, tricky and enjoyable orienteering :) https://www.tulospalvelu.fi/gps/2024genovaSprintM/
Price: ABOM
Thanks, Marti – I also had this one in my mind as one of my favourite sprints this year!
I suggest EOC Middle Final, super tricky middle distance race with both short and long legs.
https://events.loggator.com/EOC2024MFM
Prize: ABOM
Thanks, Samuele – another interesting course, which really challenged the runners!
I think that Woc sprint https://events.loggator.com/WOC2024SFM was so nice to watch! Many routchoices and tricky orienteering with unexpected twists in the city of Edimburg!
ABOM, thank you
Thanks, Roberta – this was yet another interesting course – excellent suggestion!
I suggest the World Cup Sprint in Voltri, Genova in Italy. Very cool area with all a sprint race should include: technical areas, tricky long legs, faster parts with fast decision making, and a good job by the course setter to open up area and make the runner’s preparation prior to the race necessary but not sufficient. Personally happy that there was a variation of environment (forest) and ground, but that’s a question of taste apparently ;)
I think the Men’s course is a bit better,
https://www.tulospalvelu.fi/gps/2024genovaSprintM/
https://www.tulospalvelu.fi/gps/2024genovaSprintW/
Thanks a lot, Lucas! Already suggested by Marti above, definitely a good choice! I share your taste there – at least compared to the World Cup sprint in Switzerland this was a lot more interesting.
Mine goes to Sprint Series opener in Earthquake Park , Anchorage.
1. Becasue Forest Sprints are a lot of fun (IOF should consider this discipline – and NightO – as part of the WC)
2. Because it was in Alaska = tricky glacial landforms
3. Because it was mapped by well known Swiss mappers Urs Steiner & Beat Imhof
Course: https://www.livelox.com/Viewer/Sprint-Series-Opener/Long?classId=823469&tab=player
Thanks, Manu – that terrain looks really cool! (and I’d also like to see more forest-sprints -)
I suggest this amazing long distance in the middle of wilderness from Lapland O Week (2.etap);
https://www.tulospalvelu.fi/gps/2024low2Valtiaat/
Nice mapping and course setting by Olli-Markus Taivainen. Need to mention that womens were also running the same course! I didn’t have big enough balls to execute the leg 17-18 straight but I enjoyed the whole adventure for sure and this one was my favourite course from season 2024.
Finnish Lapland is something every orienteer should experience!
Price: Kainuu Orienteering Week
Thanks, Arttu! Very cool terrain, I hadn’t seen this before!
My suggestion: Hungarian Sprint Championships Final (WRE).
An extra challenging orienteering task on a relatively simple urban terrain due to opening of many closed courtyards and buildings. I was the EA and the NC of the event, so I can confirm, that it was a great job from the course setter (Máté Bereczki).
https://omaps.worldofo.com/?id=359758
Prize: ABOM
Thanks, Gabor, looks like a very interesting urban sprint.
I would like to suggest a course of Czech Cup long distance: https://www.tulospalvelu.fi/gps/20240908M21/
I found the forest very pleasant for orienteering and the organiser took advantage of this. I also took part in this competition and, although I ran a completely different route, in my opinion the routes of the other categories were also well done. And I must say that the maps were of very good quality
Price: Confident Orienteering & Personal coaching
Thanks a lot, looks like a tough one!
My suggection ORIENTEERING WORLD CUP 2024 final KUOPIO / FINLAND. Long distance.
Reasons: they were Classic Long distances. The route choices meant a lot for a successful performance.
Maps here:
https://www.tulospalvelu.fi/gps/2024wcfLongM/map
https://www.tulospalvelu.fi/gps/2024wcfLongW/map
Prize: OCAD, please.
Thanks a lot, definitely one of the interesting long distance races on to level this year!
My pick is the Finnish championship sprint in Tapiola, Espoo. First of all it had a excellent map where the cartographer had managed to simplify the top level of a mall with the lower city centre into a clear and readable entity. The course itself had great route choice legs where they used forbidden areas reasonably. There were very hectic parts before the decisive route choice legs so that it was crucial to read those legs beforehand. There was also few stairs that tested orienteers physical condition. In conclusion I think it was a great example of a course that demanded advanced map reading techniques so that the winners really were the best orienteers and not only runners.
Map link: https://www.tulospalvelu.fi/gps/2024smsprinttiM/
Prize: Kainuu orienteering week
Thanks, Aleksi! I’ll take a look at this one for Route to Christmas as well.
I chose the second stage of the Czech O-Tour, which took place in the Mirakulum amusement park. I didn’t run the elite category, but I find the course the most interesting.
https://www.livelox.com/Viewer/Kwak-Czech-O-Tour-2024-Mirakulum-E2-WRE/H21E?classId=728558&tab=player
Prize: Vienna O-challenge
Thanks Lucas, looks fun!
My suggestion is Austrian Sprint-Distance (WRE) in “Altlichtenwarth”. This sprint course in a very challenging area was just how a sprint should be like and surprised a lot of runners: tricky route choice already to the first control, a lot of decisions all the way long, so this course gave you never a second to be unfocused.
Map Link: https://www.livelox.com/Viewer/3-Austria-Cup-Sprint-WRE-OM-Senioren/H21-E-H-20E-H-18E-H21K-H21L-H35-?classId=758721&tab=player
Prize: VOC
Thanks, Chris, another one I’ve got to take a closer look at!
I would like to nominate the M21 NAOC Long Distance in Calabogie, Canada.
Because this was a brilliant course for the terrain available – a perfect mix of long and shorter legs. The three long route choice legs turned out to be very decisive for the results and I still can’t figure which route choices are the best. Interestingly enough the winner of M21, did not win a single split during the race, which shows that the course required a lot of focus and attention the entire way.
Map (course L11): http://orienteeringca.nationprotect.net/cgi-bin/reitti.pl?act=map&id=945
Prize: Vienna O-week
Thanks, Andreas, indeed looks like an interesting course in a great terrain.
Hi, I would like to nominate Vienna O-challenge stage 2 – it was held in the centre of the Vienna, and it was nice course. I am so glad, that organisers took us to this terrain – who could say I ran in the old centre of one of the most beautiful city in Europe? 🤗
https://martinhoset.com/Doma/show_map.php?user=martihos&map=101153 – I couldn’t find any better map, orgs don’t allow livelox for this stage…
Prize: Lipica
Thanks, Lukas. It doesn’t look that spectacular from the map, but I am sure the experience running there was great! We’ll see if somebody comes up with a better course image, for now I add Martin’s.
Hi, I wasn´t at home because of surgery, so I could not add better map, but finally I am home – so here is better quality:
http://www.mapy.rouman.eu/subdom/mapy/show_map.php?user=LuHo&map=1306
I would like to nominate 25mannamedeln H21 Elit for the Course of the Year, the best course I ran this year. It was a challenging course that provided intense orienteering from start to finish and required accuracy all the way! It contained three factors that I think a very good middle distance course should contain: variation of legs and terrain, areas with lower visibility, and route choice legs. Talking about the last one, check out control 20 for a look of how a short leg during a middle distance can provide a route choice where it at first might not be obvious what is the fastest.
Map: https://www.livelox.com/Viewer/25mannamedeln/H21-Elit?classId=856532&tab=player
An honourable mention also goes to Swedish League #10 middle in Gyllbergen, in my eyes a very very fine example of a good middle distance course: https://www.saterbygdenkartor.se/show_map.php?user=Ossa&map=1473
Possible prize: ABOM, Ocad, 5+5 days
Thanks, Simon, great suggestions from you as every year! The fastest route to #20 would have been my choice, but definitely a nice, short routechoice legs.
Late to the party, so I see some of the most enjoyable races I’ve ran this year (NM Long, 25mannamedeln) is already taken)…
1st stage at O-Ringen could be a candidate, but I think the route choices of the longer legs were a bit too simple. The Swiss Long Distance Championship could’ve been a decent candidate as well, but a Long Distance Championship held on a shortened distance with a winning time of 65 minutes does not reach the top in this competition.
I therefore have to pick a course I didn’t run, and I’m picking the JWOC long distance. I think the course setter team did a great job with both courses, but I’m picking the Mens course ( https://tulospalvelu.fi/gps/20240703M/ ) Both course offered a great combination of demanding routechoices and tricky controls in more detailed areas, but the extra kilometers you get in the mens course gives space for a couple of additional route choice challenges. The only negative thing about this course is that the loop with control 8-9-10 is not aesthetically pleasing with the angles… :)
Honorable mentions to both the Finnish Championship Long Distance and Night. Both those courses and areas looked really cool and would’ve been great to run.
Prize: 5 days Madonna di Campiglio
Late to the party, but always excellent suggestions and a good memory! I also liked the JWOC long, already presented it in Route to Christmas as well.
As Ivar mentioned, several good ones already picked, but probably my favorite for this season is still Halden O-Meeting sprint: https://www.livelox.com/Viewer/Halden-O-Meeting-Sprint/H-21-WRE?classId=741083&tab=player
Emil Wingstedt as course-setter went with rather low number of controls for sprint, but it included few really nice long legs that you had to plan and execute really well. Every one of them had few options to choose from and it punished you a lot, if you took wrong one (p.s. route to Christmas suggestion).
Thanks a lot, Matija, an interesting one that I need to take a closer look at!
World Cup Sprint relay in Nervi/Genova, last June https://woc2026.com/wp-content/uploads/2024/09/World-Cup-Sprint-Relay-min-scaled.jpg
Fun course, decisive legs, big drama all legs long in a very nice scenario.
Prize: ABOM
Thanks, Franco – a very interesting relay – good course!
You know it yourself!
OO.cup always delivers. I particularly liked the Stage 4 on the l’Angoulot Map (M21 Elite).
OO.Cup please
https://www.livelox.com/Viewer/OOcup-2024-DAY-4/M21E?classId=801336&tab=player
Yes, also one of my favourites! Since I could only find the M21 Ultimate course in omaps (and I really love the ultimate courses), I decided to add that one – hope you don’t mind…
I sent in a suggestion back in October for this year’s Harry Lagert Finale race, I’m hoping to see the longest leg as a RtoC selection as well! https://www.livelox.com/Viewer/Harry-Lagerts-Nattcup-2024-Finale/Legendar?classId=867547&tab=player
Thanks, Terje! And yes, I have it on my list of candidates to RtC, definitely a good chance it will pop up there as well.
I spent some thousand hours on arranging Swedish Championships in Ultra long distance in Grövelsjön this year in August. It was a part of Swedish League. I was not the course planner, but I really want to see how this very wilderness course will be judged by you others.
There was a team of four persons in the course setting team: Per Forsgren, Robbin Kantarp, Emma Kantarp and Ole Jernström.
The very big map, 60 km2 in total, was done by as many as 13 different mappers! To avoid problems with different styles of mapping, the mappers got areas that differed in character. The area is almost pure wilderness, and most of the area is in a protected nature, and also where the sami people have their reindeers – we put very much energy in taking care of nature and fauna.
Anyway, the terrain is mostly extremly fast and with good visibility but alsom partly very steep, partly very stony. It was difficult to make difficult route choises, but we used the steep parts for that.
Since it was common starting method, groups of runners chosed not all possible route choises.
So enjoy, here it is!

Absolute great! For me clearly the best so far.
Thanks, Sven, a great one which I have already enjoyed, and which I also plan to include in Route to Christmas this year.
Hi
I would like to nominate Finnish championships long distance 2024. Most beautiful terrain where I run in 2024. Hidden gem in middle of nowhere
M21: https://www.tulospalvelu.fi/gps/2024smpitkaH/
W21: https://www.tulospalvelu.fi/gps/2024smpitkaD/
Prize: 5+5 days Sardinia
Thansk, Daniel, that’s a cool one that I had missed!
As a fan of night orienteering, I would like to nominate both Finnish and Estonian night-O champs.
One was won by Timo Sild and the other one was prepared by him.
Both terrains were very ‘white’ but the lack of reflectors at CPs led to a lot of huge mistakes.
The well balanced switching between easy and tricky legs made it assumingly challenging to maintain a steady rythm and it was easy to forget contact with the map in crucial sections.

Thanks, also a big fan!
Fantastically exciting terrain with challenging courses for the German long-distance championships. Even participated in an older class!

Thanks, I’ve looked at this before, definitely a nice one!
Hello
The Kyiv City Championship on October 13, 2024 🇺🇦
The former residence of the fugitive president Viktor Yanukovych.
It is now a national park.
I planned the course: https://www.livelox.com/Viewer/-13-10-2024/-21-?classId=860621&tab=player
Prize: Confident Orienteering & Personal coaching
Thanks 🙂
I am very late, but still I am here!
I clearly chose the MOV24 in Venezia. Maybe the best city orienteering of the world!
I chose the WE course of this year of day 2 (Long Distance in the City!) as I only found a map of this course online (on wordofomaps!).
I was there for the first time (same course M21L) and I will for sure return one day!
Where do you find long distance city orienteering nowadays???
Here, in Venice you can do it, everybody, not only the best of the word! Unique in the world I think.
We spent an absolute great weekend in this astonishing town with dozens of bridges to cross. Each more pitoresque than the other.

I’d like to suggest the Italian Sprint Cup race in Comacchio. A thrilling sprint in the town also called “small Venice”, offering intense route choices through canals and bridges and demanding micro-navigation. The mix of long strategic legs and technical short legs created constant challenges for me

Hi!
My suggestion is main stage of Gdańsk City Race 2024. Long distance – not so very common in city version, but totally worth it! Course is full of interesting route choices and the views are simply taken out from postcards, as runners could see the most famous places along the run.
Here is Men Elite class, but look also into other courses: https://www.livelox.com/Viewer/Gdansk-City-Race-2024-E3/Elite-M?classId=828488&tab=player
Prize: Sudety Cup
Thanks, Dominika. Long city races can be a nice challenge.
I’d like to nominate the Arctic Orienteering Club’s Hatcher Pass Mountain-O course. This event was mapped, set, and organized by a family of three orienteers in the beautiful setting of the Talkeetna Mountains in Alaska. The topography didn’t allow for a huge range of route choices, but controls were placed in challenging and dramatic locations that pushed orienteers to use their brains and legs in equal measure. There were some interesting symbology decisions made on this brand new map to account for exceptionally steep topography and a lot of LiDAR mapped boulders. https://omaps.worldofo.com/?id=357620
Thanks, Dorn, this looks like spectacular terrain!
My suggestion is for Comacchio Sprint Italy Cup – Day 1.
An unexpected area in this “little Venice” with some nice route choices and changes of speed
https://www.livelox.com/Viewer/Coppa-Italia-Sprint-1-prova-Comacchio-Fattibello-FE-/ME?classId=727065&tab=player
Prize: ABOM
Thanks, Viola, looks like a nice area for sprint.
I’d like to nominate the course from the first day of the Alaska Orienteering Festival. The terrain was a wonderfully confusing mix of hills and depressions and the course consistently kept competitors on their toes with challenging navigation. Deciduous forest was punctuated by mossy clearings and distinct thickets. A definite ‘course of the year’!
Here’s a link to the map: https://www.livelox.com/Viewer/WIllow-Creek-Classics/Red?classId=810277
And, a post-event writeup from the club: https://oalaska.org/2024/08/alaska-orienteering-festival-results/
And, also a pre-event blog entry based on an early draft of the map: https://confident-orienteering.blogspot.com/2024/07/analysis-of-terrain-for-upcoming.html
Looks like a cool area, would have loved to run there, thanks for the nomination!
The two competitions that came to my mind was Swedish Champs in Ultralong (but already mentioned by Sven above) and the Swedish Champs in middle distance that I will throw a punch for here.
Organized by Nyköpings OK in a area not used for 50 years, and the terrain was fanstastic. Beautiful, fast and techinical coastal terrain.
And according to me, a really nice example on how a middle distance course should look like. Detailed map reading, a lot of direktion changes and still some route choices.
M21: https://www.livelox.com/Viewer/SM-medel-Swedish-League-9-final/H21-A-Final?classId=834768&tab=player

Thanks, Martin, looks like a very nice and interesting middle distance course.
I would like to nominate the H21A course from the second and final day of the 2024 Israel open championship, which was held at April 5th – 6th this year. The second day of the championship was a long distance course in Ben Shemen forest, located in the center of the country, about halfway between Tel Aviv and Jerusalem. The course is 11.6 kilometers long.
I chose to nominate this course due to the following reasons: It is a very diverse terrain, that is different then the forests that we are used to in Europe. It includes sections of fast Jerusalem pine forest that have great runnability, the more dense and slow Mediterranean cypress forest, and a semi open olive tree section.
The course Itself is as diverse as the terrain. As a long distance, the focus is of course on the long legs and route choices (you might find some legs that will fit for route to Christmas – like the 1st and 4th controls, and more) but there are also very technical short legs that punish those who are not 100% focused for the entirety of the race, even as you become more tired at the end of the course. In addition, the course planner did an excellent job taking advantage of all of the different types of terrain mentioned earlier, which make for a great boost for the fun factor of the orienteering, as well as a greater challenge for the orienteers who have to suit their speed and technics to the type of terrain that they are in at every part of the course.
H21A: http://3drerun.worldofo.com/2d/index.php?idmult%5B%5D=-17016577&idmult%5B%5D=-17016560&idmult%5B%5D=-17016561&idmult%5B%5D=-17016571&idmult%5B%5D=-17016572&idmult%5B%5D=-17016573&idmult%5B%5D=-17016574&idmult%5B%5D=-17016575&idmult%5B%5D=-17016576&idmult%5B%5D=-17016618
all prizes seem great, but my favorite is ABOM in Portugal. KOW in Finland and 5 days Madonna di Campiglio in Italy also look very nice.
Thanks a lot for the nomination, Tal – looks like a cool course in a very varied terrain!
WOC 2024 Knock out Semi-final is without a doubt course of the year in my opinion. Jon Cross & (Joe Hudd) planned an absolute corker. The mix of short and long legs with sustained difficulty and interesting legs, showed a very high level of sprint planning. The area was utilised to the full degree, with hard execution and route choice that was hard to analyse. Legs 2-3 & 5-6, had interesting and decisive route choices causing considerable drama, which was incredible to watch! Short but sweet!

I’d like to nominate the long distance courses of the Spring Spartacus Cup (also CEYOC) from April.
Strong international field, as many chose this competition as part of their EOC preparation. A pretty technical terrain, with challenging courses, offering some great routechoice options (course setter: David Peregi):

I’d like to nominate OOCup 2024 Day 1 held in Grande Montagne France, a very interesting terrain with several paths not easy to find because of difficult visibility and a hilly terrain it was a great and demanding high concentration in navigation.
Prize: Ocad
Thanks, Boris! Already suggested by Andreas Kemp further up, definitely looks like a great course!

Hi, I would like to nominate Lipica open 2024 Day 2 which was held on the southern slopes of the Kokos mountain, interesting terrain with a high variation of steepness and lot of green sections that demanded physical and mental skills for orienteers.

Great suggestion – I’ve been singling this one out for Route to Christmas as well – some really nice long legs here!
Hi. I would like to suggest the Norgescup final (Norwegian cup) (masstart) in Kongsberg in september, the H21-course. Maybe not the most interesting terrain, but I think the curse-setter was able to get the best out of it. The forking system is really god, which I think should be used as an example to other mass-start competitions.
https://events.loggator.com/2024-09-22FellesH21
Price:Oocup
Thanks, Halvor, I hadn’t seen this before. The forking system looks fun for the runners, but probably would not be perfect for TV/spectators (and there might be some extra randomness introduced with such loops), but fun!
I would like to nominate two courses that I believe deserve to be included in the voting for “Course of the Year 2024″. Both races were held in February as part of the Maximus O Meeting and were World Ranking Events (WRE):
– Long Distance: https://events.loggator.com/MOM24-LongMSE
– Middle Distance: https://events.loggator.com/MOM24-MiddleMSE
These courses stood out for their high quality, technical challenge, and exceptional terrain. #TheBestChooseMaximus
Thanks, Raul, I’ve looked at both the last days for Route to Christmas – very interesting courses indeed!
The long distance at the 2024 North American Orienteering Championships was outstanding: http://orienteeringca.nationprotect.net/cgi-bin/reitti.pl?act=map&id=945
The longest course, L11, offered a great mix of really technical orienteering in the beginning, followed by hugely decisive route choice legs, and a section at the end where the fittest runners could gain a lot of time by pushing hard through the physical terrain. Truly a test of long distance orienteering.
– Boris
Thanks, Boris! Already suggested by Andreas Kemp further up – definitely a very good suggestion!
Coast and Islands 2024 provided another great example of fantastic orienteering in unmapped territory. All very low key, but great fun and superbly organised.
2024 on the West Coast of Scotland was superb, especially the long day on rough and tough terrain, most of which was untouched by human hand.

World Cup 2 – sprint Genoa. Great and challenging course, fun to watch and demanding for the athletes :-). Prize: Ocad https://orienteering.sport/wp-content/uploads/2024/06/wc_2024_2_sprint_men.png
Thanks, Kjetil – definitely a nice one – already suggested!
Hi, this year I’m suggesting indoor sprint which I attended last Saturday.

Category DE https://www.livelox.com/Viewer/Zimni-hradubicka-liga-Indoor-sprint-Zazijte-knihovnu-jinak/DE?classId=883248
It was quick, it was really FUN, it was something different, and because I’m a librarian it was quite heartwarming.
We can have forest courses all the time, but courses like these they’re one in a decade opportunity. It was for the 40th anniversary of OK Slavia Hradec Králové
Studijní a vědecká knihovna Hradec Králové Hradec Králové Česká Republika 7.12.2024
If I had to choose a price it would be OO cup 5 days :)
My suggestion for the Course of the Year 2024 is the Middle Distance World Ranking Event at the Veluwe2Days:
https://www.livelox.com/Viewer/Veluwe2Days-Day-1-Kootwijkerzand/M21E?classId=869062&tab=player
This international event was organised by the Dutch Orienteering Federation. The course was in a remarkable sand dune area surrounded by mixed forests and small relief.
Preferred price: OOcup.
Thanks, Werner, looks fun!
Thanks, Marie!
Hi, this is not a classic orienteering course, but it would be interesting for many orienteers too. The Original Mountain Marathon will take place every year in the UK. There are pair of competitors and they use map, compas as in classic orinteering. It’s 2-day event, next year will be at Lake District.
This year Elite courses:
Day 1: https://theomm.com/wp-content/uploads/2024/11/E1-Optimum-scaled.jpg
Day 2: https://theomm.com/wp-content/uploads/2024/11/E2-Optimum-scaled.jpg
Original Mountain Marathon website: https://theomm.com/
If this will be of interest I choose the 5-days Madonna di Campiglio.
I always try to suggest a course or at least an event that I ran myself.
So it is the 3rd Stage of this years POM. Very intense orienteering right from the beginning. Almost at the border of what is still possible to read and to run in the terrain. Especially the start area felt like one of the more extrem terrains to do orienteering in. Nevertheless it was fun and most had a story or two to tell once they did reach the finish.

Hi Jan,
this year we organised an amazing sprint in the biggest kids outdoor area in Czechia, in Mirakulum. It was also WRE with an elite runners (Glonek Jakub, Michiels Yannick, Casanova Riccardo, …)
You can find it at Livelox: https://www.livelox.com/Viewer/Kwak-Czech-O-Tour-2024-Mirakulum-E2-WRE/H21E?classId=728558&tab=player
prize: Sudety cup
Thank you!
Thanks, Jan, good to see you commenting here! Course looked like great fun, already suggested by Lucas W above!
End of September, night orienteering in empty, gentle slopes with some ant hills in Northern Finland. Challenging enough, but still doable if you know what to do. The only goal is to pass the qualification for the next day’s final, where there were 3 qualifying heats, so no big mistakes are allowed. My suggestion for the course of the year is the Finnish Championship night orienteering qualification. You can get a feel for the terrain from the old headcam video of the late champion orienteer Pasi Ikonen from 10 years ago: https://youtu.be/CkE4yMRnI-Y

Oh no, I completely missed this this year. Anyway, out of competition, I am still going to share my course of the year, as every year.
It was the second stage of Rumcajsovi míle summer 3 day event in the Czech paradise aka sandstone heaven. It was a forrest sprint on a highly detailed map which showed every rock, every boulder in perfect detail. In some places it was like a labyrinth. Yet as a sprint it was fast and one must’ve had everything under control to not get lost. Superb fun. Plus couple of controls were placed in caves. Like you literally had to go down into darkness.
Course here: https://www.livelox.com/Viewer/Rumcajsovy-mile-2024-E2/H21A?classId=818088&tab=player
@Matej: You got lucky, took this in while tidying up – looks like a great race & course!
Hello O-friends! I will try to be original. I paid attention to the distance of the Russian Championship for men’s elite in Slyudorudnik. My opinion, it is a very interesting and diverse distance. Particularly impressive is the way from 5 to 6 CP, where you can find 5-7 options. I understand that this choice does not correspond to the political situation, but I believe that only sport will save this world…

Hi, I think the greatest route of this year is finnish night championship, its look realy amazing and hard and I really want to try this route sometime. https://omaps.worldofo.com/?id=360160
