Swedens’s women and Norway’s men took clear victories in the relay that finished off the World Orienteering Championships 2025 in Kuopio, Finland.
The battle for silver and bronze was a lot closer, with Norway beating Switzerland in a tight battle on the last leg in the women’s leg, while the Swiss men took silver, with Finland taking the bronze after a very tight battle with Sweden and France.
Women: Sweden dominant again
Sweden’s women were the big favourites after being dominant as a team in the individual races, and with three strong races by Hanna Lundberg, Sanna Fast and Tove Alexandersson, last leg runner Tove Alexandersson could run Sweden in to a clear victory. Norway’s Pia Young Vik opened very strongly on the first leg – even ahead of Sweden after the first leg – and built up quite a big lead over the Swiss women. After two legs the gap from Norway’s last leg runner Andrine Benjaminsen to Switzerland’s Simona Aebersold was nearly two minutes – and even if Aebersold got the gap down to around 30 seconds before the last arena passing, it was not enough to challenge Norway for the silver medal.
Aebersold also did a technical mistake at the arena passage – throwing away the map instead of turning it – that cost her around 45 seconds, but even without this mistake it would probably not have been possible to catch Benjaminsen.
Czechia finished 4th ahead of Finland and Denmark.
Men: Norway’s first since 2018
In the men’s class, Norway were the biggest favourites with both the gold medalist from the long and middle distance in the team, but with 7 years since the last Norwegian gold medal, and very strong Swedish and Swiss teams, the men’s relay was a lot more open than the women’s relay. All favorite teams were close together after the first leg, and also the first part of the second leg did not see big gaps between the top teams, but then on the long leg after the arena passage at the second leg big gaps started opening up due to different route choices among the top teams (see key routechoices for the leg at the top of the page). Norway’s Eirik Langedal Breivik took the best route choice here, and manage to open up a gap of more than 30 seconds to Switzerland – with Sweden more than 90 seconds behind. Norway never gave away this lead again, and Kasper Fosser on the last leg increased the lead to around 90 seconds to Switzerland througout the leg.
The battle for bronze was a lot more exciting, though. Sweden’s Max Peter Bejmer seemed to be on his way to a relatively clear bronze medal in a battle with Finland’s Miika Kirmula, but Bejmer then did a big mistake at the 15th control, and even took the wrong control and got disqualified. Kirmula also did a big mistake, though, and let France’s Lucas Basset into the battle for the bronze medal. They ran together to the second last control, but Kirmula was stronger towards the end and could celebrate Finland’s first and only medal in the championships on home ground.
France finished 4th ahead of Estonia in 5th and Denmark in 6th.
