World Cup Opening 2025 Idre: All You Need To Know

idre

The 2025 Orienteering World Cup season starts off in Swedish Idre Fjäll on Wednesday June 18th with a shortened long distance Qualification race. The action continues with three TV-broadcast forest races from Thursday to Sunday: Long Thursday, Middle Saturday and Relay Sunday.

Idre Fjäll offered great races with tricky orienteering when the orienteering World Cup visited the interesting mountain terrain in 2021 – expect similar challenges this time around! At the 2021 World Cup, the variation between high-speed open terrain and terrain with denser forest (and quite hidden controls) which required very careful orienteering proved to be very challenging for the athletes. After the middle distance in Idre, World of O’s analysis concluded that we probably hadn’t seen a race with that many mistakes from top runners and so many changes in the top since the epic WOC relay in France back in 2011.

A total of 309 athletes from 29 countries are entered, including reigning World Cup overall champions Simona Aebersold (SUI) and Kasper Fosser (NOR). This will be the last real test ahead of the season highlight in Finland in a few week’s time, the World Orienteering Championship (WOC) in Kuopio – and also the first big test of the season.

The top 20 in each of the three qualification heats on Wednesday advance to the finals. In addition, the 10 best from Thursday’s long-distance B-final also qualify for the middle-distance A-final. As all nations can enter up to 9 runners, we will see a very strong starting field.

Terrain and old maps of race area

Idre Fjäll offers classic Scandinavian mountain-forest: mature pine, heathery ground, scattered boulders and detailed contour features, broken by bare-rock ridges and small marshes. Paths are scarce – accurate compass and careful map reading are key. Old maps from the 2021 World Cup give the best feel for what awaits – see the full World of O analysis from the 2021 World Cup races Middle, Long and Relay.

The intro from  the 2021  Middle distance tells a lot:

Tricky orienteering with lots of mistakes from the top ranked runners led to a very interesting middle distance World Cup race in Idre Fjäll this rainy Saturday. We got surprise victories in both the women’s and men’s race – with junior Hanna Lundberg (Sweden) winning the women’s race from start number one and Joey Hadorn (Switzerland) winning the men’s race.

See one of the key legs below – here Gustav Bergman lost nearly 3 minutes.

See below for the battle in the women’s last leg on the Relay.

The blog post from RF-coach on how to master the terrain in Idre is also a good read ahead of the World Cup openers. Likewise, the Ivarnational Orienteering Podcast that has a (brief) preview of the World Cup opener towards the end of this week’s podcast (starting from 95 minutes out – you can enjoy an in-depth analysis of the Jukola relay before that).
