Both Norway and Sweden have had EOC selection races this weekend. The Swiss and Finnish team also joined in on the Norwegian EOC selection races which were held in WOC relevant terrain north of Trondheim.
Below you find GPS tracking and maps from the races. Quite spectacular races – especially the Norwegian test races seemed to give some big challenges for the runners.
See also an interesting discussion at Alternativet.nu about following at the Swedish EOC selection race long distance yesterday (Swedish text). Evidently one can observe from the GPS tracking that some runners have clearly broken the “12-second rule” (see also background info about the “12-second rule” here and here). There were strong complaints from Sweden when the IOF changed the rules about following ahead of this season – let us see if how this is followed up on national level.

Observations/Analysis of the results
Some observations based on the results in the EOC selection races – noting that the Norwegian EOC selection races were held in WOC relevant terrain:
- Swiss runners: Simone Niggli looks very strong. Two top performances in WOC relevant terrain this weekend – winning with more than 7(!) and 2 minutes! Daniel Hubmann also looks very strong. He has come back in the end of the race beating Anders Nordberg three times in a week now. Still Hubmann had 4 minutes up to todays surprise Hans Gunnar Omdal today. Marc Lauenstein did a good long distance, finishing in 6th spot. Matthias Merz had some problem with the orienteering, but had good speed. Note that the Swiss had a though training camp in their legs at these races.
- Norwegian men: Anders Nordberg is where he is supposed to be at this stage – and is still one of the big favourites in WOC in Trondheim this autumn. He was ahead of Hubmann towards the end of both races this weekend – there is still a lot of time to get that little extra ahead of the WOC in Trondheim. The Norwegian Hans Gunnar Omdal was the big surprise of the weekend (6th and victory with 4 minutes in the Norwegian EOC selection races)- coming back after being out of the top for several years. He probably won’t be among the big ones in the fast EOC terrain (if he runs there), but if he can keep this level this autumn he might be one of runners fighting for gold in the WOC long distance.
- Norwegian women: Anne Margrethe Hausken had the worst orienteering weekend in years, making big mistakes at several controls both days – not a single top 10 result. However, at splits she shows that the running shape is there, so this is probably one a distraction on her way to WOC. Marianne Andersen did not participate this weekend after too much training, and thus the 40 year old Hanne Sandstad was the best Norwegian in Sunday’s long distance. Sandstad said after the race that she will not run WOC, as she has been in the out-of-bounds areas for WOC. On Saturday’s middle distance Heidi Østlid Bagstevold was the best Norwegian runner in second spot – two minutes behind Niggli. Betty Ann Bjerkreim Nilsen did a good race in the sprint Thursday, but did some big mistakes Sunday.
- Swedish men: Emil Wingstedt had an impressive weekend – 1st spot in middle, 2nd spot in long and Swedish Champion sprint. Wingstedt lived in Trondheim for several years during his studies, and will definitely be among the favourites in WOC in Trondheim. Martin Johansson won the long distance during the Swedish EOC test races, but got injured during the middle distance. Anders Holmberg had a good weekend with one second and one third place. Peter Öberg is not in the same shape as last spring when he was close to unbeatable in Sweden – 4th in middle and sprint and 10th in long.
- Swedish women: Helena Jansson also had an impressive weekend – victory in long and sprint – 4th place in middle. Emma Claesson (Engstrand) is also back – two times second and one 4th place. Linnea Gustafsson with victory in middle/third spot in sprint and Annika Billstam with one second spot and one third spot also shows that she is where she is supposed to be.
- Finnish runners: Good races also by the Finnish runners in the Norwegian test races, but not quite up there among the Swiss and Norwegians. Mats Haldin (4th long), Tero Föhr (5th long, 8th middle) and Kim Fagerudd (5th middle) were the best among the men in the Norwegian EOC selection races. Among the women, Minna Kauppi showed that she had the speed of Simone Niggli, but Kauppi did some big mistakes and a 4th spot in the long distance nearly 8 minutes behind Simone Niggli was her best result this weekend. Instead Karoliina Sundberg (3rd middle) had the best Finnish result during the weekend. Updated information about the Finnish runners: Just as for the Swiss runners, the Finnish runners had some intense days the last days before attending the Norwegian EOC test races. There were Finnish EOC tests sprint and middle on Wednesday/Thursday, the team was selected May 13th, and then travel to Norway began for the team (Note! Mats Haldin did not run the Finnish selection races). Janne Salmi said in an interview on May 13th, – On Saturday the selected team will participate in the Norwegian EOC selection races middle distance. That is an excellent chance to see how they are compared to the other countries. […] On Sunday there is a long distance, but there the runners may decide the speed themselves as there have been many competitions and as there is a training camp coming.. - Also notable is that Czech Vendula Klechova managed a 4th spot in the middle distance in the Norwegian races.
