Thierry Gueorgiou wins exciting 10Mila for Kalevan Rasti!

– I had a very good flow, but I was still running too fast for my technique, Thierry Gueorgiou said about his opening speed on the last leg of the 10Mila relay 2013 – after leading Kalevan Rasti to victory in 10Mila 2013. – I had the best legs of the winter so far. It felt really easy to run fast.

Thierry Guergiou simply had another speed than Olav Lundanes and the others out there today (above you see the spot where Gueorgiou opened full speed and Lundanes gave up). Kalevan Rasti and Halden served the spectators a very nice fight all the way from the start.

The excitement started already towards the first controls where Kalevan Rasti’s Kiril Nikolov lost a few minutes. In the end Nikolov made around 10 minutes of mistakes on the first leg – but fast running limited the loss to 5 minutes to the lead. Luckily for Nikolov, Halden lost just as much time on this first leg, so it was not cruicial. And the third big favourite Kristiansand: Nearly 18 minutes time loss!!

The greatest performances:

  • Kratov’s long night in his black shirt- very impressive catchup – and getting the 11-man group away from all the other teams.
  • Gueorgiou’s impressive last leg – winning the relay and the last leg. Only 1 minute ahead of Matthias Kyburz though – also nice to see that Hubmann is back after his compass/GPS-watch problems with a 4th best place on the leg
  • Matthias Karlsson’s 5th leg – nearly deciding it for Halden – it looked like the decisive gap, but then Gueorgiou was sooo strong on the last leg. However, Kristiansand’s Jostein Andersen (partially in daylight) was still more than 3 minutes faster – winning the leg with 2 minutes.

Below the cruical part of the excitement from the LiveBlog is replayed leg by leg – enjoy! See all of the LiveBlog here (probably more details than you want:).

Interview Vegard Brun Saga, NTNUI:
– It went well. A small mistake on the second long leg. I was with Lidingö. We got a bit to the right, and there was complete chaos. But I fixed it – there was a long row of runners, and I caught up with them.
– I didn’t see so many mistakes. Maybe at the end when we turned – there were some runners who had gambled.
– It is flat, so it is easy to loose control.
– We have trained well, so I think we’ll be in Top 10 until leg 7-8 at least.
– We’ll try hard as long as possible – if everybody is focused we’ll do well.

Hans Petter Mathisen (took time to pull down his trousers in the run-in – a tradition the first NTNUI runner Vegard Brun Saga forgot in the excitement when coming first at the first leg)
– Only 8 legs left, so we’ll see.
– We want to have a gap after the long leg.
– Nobody wanted to follow me to the first control, so I thought that it was only old guys who could not keep the speed.
– We ran so slow that I didn’t think we were in the lead, but we obviously where.
– I think we can manage top 10 in the end. We have a good team – better than many think.

Sat May 04 2013 18:37:39 GMT-0400 (EDT)

Lidingö loosing its lead now … Bad compass work for Lidingö cost them around 4 minutes here. They actually went to the wrong gaffling (E), and had to relocate and go back. This lost the relay for Lidingö..
Sat May 04 2013 18:39:24 GMT-0400 (EDT)

Lauri Sild – first in on the 3rd leg:
– A lot of unconfidence, because night orienteering is not really my thing.
– I tried to get away several times – I even managed a few times – but then they caught me again. The same happened until the end.
– I like the forkings, so I was no option for the long leg.

Leg 4

17.9 km – 93 minutes hard core orienteering. Lots of GPS!
Out on the leg we have two groups – the Olle Boström group out in the lead and the Kratov-group around 3 minutes behind.
Sat May 04 2013 19:42:30 GMT-0400 (EDT)

We soon see that Kratov is the master of the night – picking second by second from the Boström group.
Now down to around 1:40 ….
Sat May 04 2013 19:54:26 GMT-0400 (EDT)

Nice camera action! Boström knows what he is doing…

Sat May 04 2013 20:17:24 GMT-0400 (EDT)

Sat May 04 2013 20:38:50 GMT-0400 (EDT)

Sat May 04 2013 20:39:03 GMT-0400 (EDT)

Järla going right along with SNO – the rest going left
Sat May 04 2013 20:40:25 GMT-0400 (EDT)

Bad choice by all runners?

– The Kratov-group goes down along the lake – a quite risky choice which luckily for Kratov went well.

– Boström doesn’t trust his own abilities, and just wants to get back to Kratov instead of finishing off his route up on the path.

Sat May 04 2013 20:45:35 GMT-0400 (EDT)

On the way to control 14 – still 11 teams up there in the lead
Sat May 04 2013 20:52:49 GMT-0400 (EDT)

Boström and Kratov dominated the long night leg – here Boström first at the prewarning
Sat May 04 2013 21:05:48 GMT-0400 (EDT)

Boström and Kratov – side by side – after the long night. The two winners of this leg.
Sat May 04 2013 21:10:21 GMT-0400 (EDT)

Interview Kratov:
– No problem that I start some minutes behind. I just went out there to do my job. Run without mistakes.
– I new already before the race that everybody would take my back. I took the black suit to try to keep them away, but it did not help much. But they did not disturb me much.
– The course was nice. Nice long legs and nice orienteering.
– Me or Olle did the orienteering. I took most of the orienteering – but Olle did a lot of the job as well.
– I could have easily been first into the finish if I wanted to, but I worked for the team and wanted to have Erik in second position.
– We don’t think that we can win 10Mila this year – we think that we can be among the best in 2-3 years. Now we will just as good as we can.
Sat May 04 2013 21:18:15 GMT-0400 (EDT)

Interview Olle Boström – first in after the long night leg at 10Mila 2013:
– I was not king of the night – Kratov was.
– The body felt quite good, but I didn’t really get full control on the orienteering
– I got stuck in a green area, and then Kratov came. He was very impressive
– It was not very fast, but very optimized. The few times when Kratov did some small mistakes, I helped
– I tried to do my own thing once because I had good legs, but I didn’t trust myself and fulfill the routechoice to the right
– It was a lot of fun – but Kratov was most impressive today.
– The goal is Top 5 – then we are happy. We’ll see if we can manage even better.

Leg 10

Out on the last leg, Olav Lundanes had a gap of 3 minutes to Thierry Gueorgiou. Gueorgiou started hard – but made many small mistakes. Thus the distance was stable for a long time, until it suddenly started to go down second by second after around 5 km of running….

Now down to 2:15 between Halden and KR

2:15 …. 2:13 ….. 2:11 …. 2:08 … going down, down, down..

Interview with Halden’s relay coach Tore Sandvik:
– I don’t envy Lundanes the job he has now
– I told him to go offensive. He knows what to do, so I did not have to tell him much.
– Everything can happen, but Olav has had problems this winter with sickness and infection, and is not back in top shape. So it will be a tough task.
– 10Mila is a big motivation factor for all of Halden – 10Mila is very important for the club

Interview Gueorgiou:
– It was not the best Lundanes, I could see it
– I had the best legs of the winter so far. It felt really easy to run fast
– On the way to the 2nd leg, I had no idea where I was. I felt that I lost the game. Then I said I had just to run it control by control as fast as I can. I had a very good flow, but I was still running too fast for my technique.
– It was going good, but I had no idea how big the gap was. I then saw Olav on the field, and I saw that there were many kilometers left, so I calmed down a bit so I could catch him.
– Normally Olav is in better shape, so it would normally be harder to catch him.
– We had very good team spirit. We said it yesterday ; it is us against the rest.
– Some had not perfect performance, but I think it was a perfect race all in all.
