Alexandersson “cheats” us for Middle-distance duel with Niggli

World Cup leader Tove Alexandersson has decided not to start Saturday’s middle distance World Cup race out of tactical reasons. Even  winning on Saturday will not increase her chances to win the overall World Cup, and therefore the Swedish star wants to start on Sunday with rested legs.

Of course it would have been fun to meet Simone even in the forest

With this decision, all the spectators in Switzerland and the TV-viewers will also loose one of the most interesting duels in Saturday’s World Cup race. Even if the race would not have been decisive, it would have been the last big fight between the queen of orienteering through the last decennium, Simone Niggli, and the runner which might very well take over after Niggli.

PS! Niggli does not have anything to gain in the overall World Cup by running Saturday’s middle distance either.

– I will have fast legs

– Of course it would have been fun to meet Simone even in the forest here in Switzerland before she retires, Tove Alexandersson says to orientering.se.

– But the total World Cup is very important for me, and I will give myself optimal conditions to run well on Sunday. Now I will have fast legs for that race. And I really look forward to that challenge.

Overall World Cup standing

Alexandersson has a big advantage with her 736 points and 51 point lead – Niggli will need some help to take the overall World Cup.

The following rules are important for the overall calculations:

  • In the competition 13 (World Cup Final) the runners finishing the race get double points. The winner gets 200 points down to 2 points for the 40th place.
  • Total is calculated as the sum of all scores from competitions 1 to 8 plus the best 2 scores from competitions 9 to 12 and the score from competition 13 (last race)
