January Classics: Day 22

– The classic championships course at the Nordic Championships at Åland in 1986 was a real classic, Jakob Ø writes in an e-mail. – As I recall the terrain, it was like a fairy tale in some areas and very tricky to read the terrain/contours in other parts, Jakob continues.

The Åland classic championships course in 1986 is a varied course with distinctly different terrain areas used – just as a real classic course should be. Above you see the most tricky part of the men’s course.

Jakob has a few more words to say about the terrain

– It was my first big championship – I was a junior with limited experience in tricky nordic terrains. […] The difficulties may be due to my limited experience, [but] there was a lot of mistakes made – also by good orienteers. A Danish senior elite runner never found the first control.
