Tranchand: About the Course of the Year 2017

–  The courses and terrain were demanding enough and offered decisive route-choices possibilities, Frederic Tranchand explains about his favourite orienteering course this year. 

Read on for a long interview with French star Frederic Tranchand – a runner who was back in the very top, claiming an individual WOC medal, several years after last time. This interview is part of the “Course of the Year 2017″ contest organized by World of O. Q: What was the best course you run in 2017 – and why?

There are several races that come to my mind, but I would say TIOMILA was really interesting. The courses and terrain were demanding enough and offered decisive route-choices possibilities. It made big differences during the race, especially by night, therefore the relay was thrilling to follow.

(Nevertheless, I didn’t have the hardest task of the team running daylight over-there )

Q: What was the most interesting orienteering terrain you run in in 2017 – and why?

SENJA near Tromsö in Norway!

(Well, I admit I was not orienteering there but just running through the terrain with a huge smile on my face all the way: Though it’s a kind of open land with amazing view over the sea and the mountains around, still with many small relief-details, cliffs and marshes surely interesting for technical orienteering as well, where you can run more than an hour without crossing any track.)

Q: Usually the courses in interesting terrains are the ones you remember. But can you remember a very good course you ran in “boring” terrain this year?

The WORLD-CUP Final Sprint-relay in Switzerland: I think they have used very well a small village area with basically only one main street and few cross streets that doesn’t look so interesting at first look. It was actually a kind maze with runners in many directions so we had to keep focus to reach our own controls well.

Q: What is the worst course you ran in 2017?

We never know all the constraints of the course-setters to organize a race, so I don’t like to complain too much about the course. However, the challenge is sometime clearly under the expectation, and one race that comes to my mind is the CISM (Military World Champs) relay in Brazil (well, it was in November 2016 so I considered it in 2017 ;)).

Q: What is the most interesting course you ran (or saw) in your own home country in 2017?

I admit that I haven’t been running so much in France this year: I picked one course from a camp in Fountainbleau just south of Paris. (Good place to train during the winter as snow free with many maps nearby.) But you can for sure find nicer courses in France as there are so many great orienteering terrains!

Q: Did you set any courses in 2017? If so, is it possible to share the best (in your opinion) with World of O’s readers?

This course is from the Jukola 2015 terrain in Paimio: My idea was to have a mass-start with several forking (also unfair 1st control) and other disturbing things, and that everyone should put a biodegradable-tape at the control if no-one as been there before (=no tape). It was supposed to be long, and at the end it was a bit very long!

(I think nobody made it all: It took 2:15 for me without a couple of controls. Because I forgot that all maps in the database are in 1/15 000 scale even if it’s written 1/10 000 on it, and I though my course-setting program was smart enough to recognize the scale :p…)

Q: What is the most interesting routechoice leg you remember from 2017? Did you take the right choice?

The 1^st long leg of the WOC Long-distance! It was a very decisive leg of one of the most important races of the season. After a long hesitation, I took the wrong route-choice and realized it (+ I didn’t execute it well! Affecting surely the rest of the race in a negative way).

Q: What is the race you look most forward to in 2018?

The races at WOC are the ones I will prepare the most for. But maybe the EOC long-distance will be a particular challenge I look forward to.

Q: What are your goals for next year – and do you plan to change your training and/or focus in order to reach your goals in 2018?

My goal for 2018 is to perform as well as possible at the main goals: WOC and EOC. My general training organization is not changing, but there are for sure a few changes in the focus, the training content and the analysis of it.
