Switzerland won the women’s relay and Norway the men’s after two very exciting races. The terrain offered very interesting orienteering were many top teams struggled both with mistakes on controls and routechoice misses.
In the women’s race Switzerland and Sweden ran head to head through the last leg, with two of the big women of orienteering the last years Tove Alexandersson and Judith Wyder battling it out for gold. Alexandersson seemed to have a physical edge in the tough uphill towards the end of the course, but Wyder still managed to run Switzerland in to victory after Alexandersson did small misses on two easy controls in a row at the very end.

On the third last Alexandersson did not see the control point and on the second last Alexander’s saw the control, but thought it was not her control and stood still for a moment. Enough time for Wyder to pass by and run into the finish celebrating a gold medal with her teammates Elena Roos and Julia Jakob. Russia finished in a safe bronze position ahead of Norway.

In the men’s race the battle for gold was even more exciting, with 8 teams in the battle for gold just a few controls before the finish. Norway decided ahead of Switzerland and France after Norway’s Magne Dæhli did an excellent route on the long leg towards the end of the course.

In the battle for silver Switzerland and France proved to be strongest in the tough uphill towards the end, and could battle it out for the medals. Austria finished in a strong 4th place. Latvia was in the lead on large parts of the last leg, but lost some time towards the end and finished down in 8th place. Gaute Hallan Steiwer ran an excellent first leg for Norway after coming in as reserve for a sick Olav Lundanes. Eskil Kinneberg, World Champion from the Middle on Tuesday, ran equally well on the second leg.

If I had a penny every time I heard relay runners before the race talk about ’doing my own thing’, ’keep focus on my own orienteering’ and yada-yada-yada…
Just to be executed by follow other runners backs in very stupid directions, with very sparse knowledge on their own whereabouts at the moment.
