Route to Christmas: Day 13 2020

Today’s leg in Route to Christmas is the first urban sprint leg in this years’ edition. The chosen leg is from the Budapest KO sprint champs.

Thanks a lot to Máté Maródi for suggestion, analysis and illustration!

This was the final of the Budapest KO sprint. The map is by Teodóra Borhegyi and Tamás Magyar, while the course is a joint work by Márton Scultéty and myself (Máté Maródi). The recommended leg is leg number 8, the longest of this course.

This is one of those labyrinthic legs that some love and some hate – it may be tricky to even find the viable routes in high speed in a KO sprint. For Route to Christmas it should be a very nice leg to consider, at least! Here is Marodi’s introduction to the leg:

While the terrain looks simple, there were a couple of things to consider:
– some parts of the area are steep (the contour interval is 5m!)
– there are stairs on some of the routes (either down or up)
– it was a KO sprint, so individual route choices might be overridden by tactical considerations.

The leg is as usually first provided without routes – you may take a look at it and think about how you would attack this leg (if the image is too small, you may click on it to get it larger):

Location

You find other maps from the area in omaps.worldofo.com here. See also latest additions in 3DRerun from this area in order to learn more about this terrain type.

Webroute

Next you can draw your own route using the ‘Webroute’ below. Think through how you would attack this leg, and draw the route you would have made. Some comments about why you would choose a certain route are always nice for the other readers.

Then you can take a look at the analysis illustration provided by Marodi – see below the illustration for his analysis.

Looking at the results it seems that the fastest variant is D, purple. I’m not aware of any top runners choosing B, though. There are multiple reasons for D being the fastest:

  • very easy execution
  • no sharp 180 degree turns (as for the variants going to the left)
  • one can avoid climbing the long stairs and can use the ramps instead

The advantage is not large (5 seconds at most compared to A, the other widely chosen variant), but during a KO sprint event this could turn out to be decisive. See below for the complete course:

Route to Christmas series

The Route to Christmas series is a pre-Christmas tradition at World of O – giving the readers the opportunity to do one Route Choice Challenge each day from December 1st until December 24th. If you have got any good legs in GPSSeuranta or 3DRerun from 2020-competitions, or old forgotten ones which are still interesting, please email me the link at Jan@Kocbach.net, and I’ll consider including it in Route to Christmas if it looks good. Route to Christmas will not be interesting if YOU don’t contribute.

Not all legs are taken for the interesting routechoice alternatives – some are also taken because the map is interesting – or because it is not straightforward to see what to do on a certain leg. Any comments are welcome – especially if you ran the event chosen for todays leg!
