Today’s leg in Route to Christmas 2021 is a women’s leg from the Finnish Long distance championships. Another real routechoice leg – and this time with many runners losing time on a slower routechoice. Can you spot the fastest route?

Then you can take a look at how the runners have solved this leg below. As you can see, the left option seems to be clearly slower (although partly also because most of the top runners take the route to the right). The reason for left being slower can be seen in the figures further down (and also probably directly from the map) : There is less running in slow terrain and more running on road and path to the right, making it slower to take the left option. It is kind of tempting to run left due to the road on the middle of the leg having a very nice angle, but it takes too much time to get to this nice piece of road…
