JWOC Sprint Men: Big GPS Analysis

The Junior World Orienteering Championships (JWOC) 2022 Sprint offered some very interesting routechoices, good GPS-tracking which made it interesting to make performance analysis – and tight battles for the medals. Read on to see how the men’s race was decided.

The race was won by Axel Elmblad (Sweden) ahead of Tobias Alstad (Norway) with three runners sharing the third place – Mikkel Holt (Norway), Basile Basset (France) and Ilian Angeli (Italy).

Elmblad’s winning margin was a clear 26 seconds in the end – after running with higher speed than his main competitors the last half of the course. The battle for the other medals was very close, however, with four runners within 2 seconds. As you can see from the below graphical split time illustration, none of the runners did perfect races – all making smaller or larger mistakes. This article shows split times and route choices leg by leg to highlight where the runners did good and/or bad choices, and thus where the race was decided.

Men: S-1

Alstad and Emblad lost significant time to the first control (14 seconds) – Alstad due to a slower routechoice (going to the right is clearly slower) while Emblad does a mistake into the control. According to this Tweet several of the medalists passed through a forbidden area towards the first control, including the gold and silver medalist, but this did not lead to any disqualifications. Note that although one of the medalists is in the lead (Angeli), the other medalists are far down on the intermediate results (24th and downwards).
