World Cup Opener 2023 Relay: Maps and Results

map_relay_wc2023_opener_women_leg3

Sweden won both the men’s and women’s relay in very exciting races at the final day of the World Cup opening weekend of 2023 – with Sweden’s second team being the winner in the women’s class.

Both Kasper Fosser (Norway 1) and Tove Alexandersson (Sweden 1) had off days after very strong performances in the individual races, both losing so much time that their teams missed the medals. Instead Sweden 1’s Gustav Bergman and Sweden 2’s Lisa Risby took out their best and secured victories for Sweden.

Men’s relay – race development

See below for a graphical representation of the race development in the men’s race. Here leg 2 starts at control 15 and leg 3 at control 30, and the red line is Sweden 1 (Martin Regborn, Emil Svensk, Gustav Bergman). Bergman decided the race for Sweden 1 on the first part of the last leg – opening up a big gap on all the other teams which they never managed to close. Finland 1 (green) and Norway 2 (blue) were closest with last leg runners Miika Kirmula and Håvard Sandstad Eidsmo nearly catching up with Bergman towards the end.

Switzerland 1‘s Matthias Kyburz (purple line) lost a lot of time early on the last leg, but with a smashing finish nearly took a place in Top 3 for Switzerland. Sweden 2 (light blue) had a similar race developement on the last leg as Switzerland, but didn’t manage to keep up with Switzerland on the last controls. Norway 1‘s Kasper Fosser (light green) did not have his best day and run after two individual victories and ran Norway 1 in to 6th place.

Women’s relay – race development

See below for a graphical representation of the race development in the men’s race. Here leg 2 starts at control 15 and leg 3 at control 30, and the red line is the winner Sweden 2 with Karolin Ohlsson, Elin Månnson and Lisa Risby.  Three big mistakes are notable here: The big mistake of Sweden 1‘s Tove Alexandersson on the second leg (dark purple line), were Sweden 1 lost the relay. Also big mistakes by Finland 3 on the end of the second leg (black line) and Norway 2 on the last leg (light blue). After these mistakes, there were only three teams left in the battle for the Top 3 places, Sweden 2 (red), Switzerland 1 (green) and Norway 1 (blue). These are shown in more detail in another illustration below.

Norway 1’s Andrine Benjaminsen started the leg in the lead, then lost some time due to a longer forking, but all three were nearly together when running towards the arena passing 8 controls before the end. Here Benjaminsen ran to the wrong forking and lost nearly 40 seconds. She fought back, but in the end both Risby and Gemperle (Switzerland) were the strongest and best technical.
