EOC 2024: All You Need To Know

oldmap

Challenging forest terrain, interesting routechoices and high temperatures await as European Orienteering Championships (EOC) start in Hungary on Friday with Middle Qualification. The championships continue with Middle Final on Saturday, Long on Sunday and finishes off with the Relay on Tuesday.

The world’s top orienteers return to the forest when the 2024 European Orienteering Championships (EOC) kick off in Hungary on Friday, August 16th – with nearly all top ranked athletes on the start (see list according to World Ranking at the bottom of the article). Coming just one month after the sprint-focused World Championships in Edinburgh, EOC 2024 will test athletes’ forest orienteering skills across challenging, hilly terrain in central Hungary. This forest-only EOC features three medal races over five days of competition. More than 300 athletes from 35 countries will battle for European titles in the Middle distance, Long distance, and Relay events. The championships also count as Round 3 of 4 of this year’s Orienteering World Cup – with the World Cup being decided in Finland in the end of September.

EOC 2024 is centered around the Vértes Mountains, about 80 kilometers west of Budapest. While compact geographically, the competition areas offer varied terrain types that will challenge competitors in different ways. The middle distance qualification on Friday takes place in moderately hilly terrain with many erosion features near Csákberény. Saturday’s middle final and Sunday’s long distance utilize more hilly terrain around Csókakő, with steep valleys up to 75 meters deep. Tuesday’s relay wraps up the championships on similar terrain near Várgesztes.

Across all the competition areas, athletes can expect a mix of open areas, semi-open terrain with bushes and thickets, and forested sections. Runnability is generally good but can be hampered by stony slopes and denser vegetation in places. A well-developed network of paths and forest roads adds route choice complexity.

With daytime highs forecast from 30-37°C – warmest at the start of the championships with some rain expected in the weekend –  the heat may present an additional challenge for competitors. The rocky, hilly terrain combined with warm temperatures should make for physically demanding races.

All four individual gold medalists from EOC 2022 in Estonia will be on the start line looking to defend their titles:

  • Venla Harju (FIN) – Long distance
  • Simona Aebersold (SUI) – Middle distance
  • Martin Regborn (SWE) – Long distance
  • Albin Ridefelt (SWE) – Middle distance

In the relays, Sweden’s women and Norway’s men enter as the reigning European champions.
