Today’s leg in Route to Christmas is a monsterleg from a night orienteering race in Halden, Norway – the third race of the Halden Day Night Cup in the 2016/2017 winter season.
The leg is as usually first provided without routes – you may take a look at it and think about how you would attack this leg (if the image is too small, you may click on it to get it larger). This was part of a long course going over two maps, so saving part of your energy could be a good idea.

Webroute
Next you can draw your own route using the ‘Webroute’ below. Think through how you would attack this leg, and draw the route you would have made. Some comments about why you would choose a certain route are always nice for the other readers.
Then you can take a look at how the runners have solved this leg below. This illustration is complex to understand, so below we will divide the leg into two parts to give more insight into the leg. Still, from the first illustration one can see that going around to the right is clearly the best option.
But first a look at an alternative route ran by nobody (drawn by Halden coach Eva Jurenikova). The route to the left could be the fastest one, according to Jurenikova. It is however s
First a look at the first part of the leg. Here it is clearly faster to go to the right on the road:
For the second part of the leg, the road is also the fastest option.

Route to Christmas series
The Route to Christmas series at World of O has been very popular the last years – giving the readers the opportunity to do one Route Choice Challenge each day from December 1st until December 24th. If you have got any good legs in RouteGadget, GPSSeuranta or 3DRerun from 2016-competitions – or old forgotten ones which are still interesting – please email me the link at Jan@Kocbach.net, and I’ll include it in Route to Christmas if it looks good. Route to Christmas will not be interesting if YOU don’t contribute.
Not all legs are taken for the interesting routechoice alternatives – some are also taken because the map is interesting – or because it is not straightforward to see what to do on a certain leg. Any comments are welcome – especially if you ran the event chosen for todays leg!
Subliminal message on the density map?!?!? Route to Xmas day 19
Somebody always has to ruin the fun. So no more density maps this year :(
When the results of the lottery will be published?
Hope to get it done tonight and posted tomorrow. Internet has been poor in Italy where I have been the last days, sorry!
Almost the same leg was used in Norwegian Ultralong championship 1997 (the control at the start of the leg was a little bit further NE). Bjørnar Valstad had the fastest split on the left route choice.
