Route to Christmas: Day 23 2016

Today we move from the forest into the city in Route to Christmas – for the first time in 2016. The leg is from the 5th event in Swedish League, organized at May 5th. Thanks to Fredrik Ahnlén for the tip.

The leg is as usually first provided without routes – you may take a look at it and think about how you would attack this leg (if the image is too small, you may click on it to get it larger). Try to make your choice quickly, you wouldn’t have many seconds for planning in a sprint event. The leg came for the runners in the end of the race when they were tired, after a more fast running section to a arena passages and then lots of short tricky legs where the runners never had a chance to lose their focus or to read the long leg beforehand.

Location

Webroute

Next you can draw your own route using the ‘Webroute’ below. Think through how you would attack this leg, and draw the route you would have made. Some comments about why you would choose a certain route are always nice for the other readers.

Then you can take a look at how the runners have solved this leg below. Split times shown below are the actual split times from the official split times from the event. As you can see, Jonas Leandersson is clearly fastest on the leg.

And with only shown:

Ahnlen was one of the course setters on this event, and has the following comment:

I was one of the course setters and we tried really hard to present an, for Sweden, unusually tricky sprint. We used quite a lot of fences and opened up passages through buildings and closed other passages. We also used quite much fences just to slow down route choices, without completely closing the passages. This in combination with an already complex city structure gave lots of possibilities for tricky legs.

As expected the leg was the decisive one for the final results where Jonas Leandersson got a gap to Gustav Bergman after a better route choice. The most interesting how ever is that no runner actually took the best route choice! This would have been to go far right, north-northeast around controls 18/19 out to the canal and then joining Jonas Leanderssons route choice. But it is just a matter of a few seconds.
Note that looking at all routes except for Leandersson’s route, it may very well look like the straight variant shouldn’t be as much slower as seen by comparing Leandersson’s and the others’ routes.

Route to Christmas series

The Route to Christmas series at World of O has been very popular the last years – giving the readers the opportunity to do one Route Choice Challenge each day from December 1st until December 24th. If you have got any good legs in RouteGadget, GPSSeuranta or 3DRerun from 2016-competitions – or old forgotten ones which are still interesting – please email me the link at Jan@Kocbach.net, and I’ll include it in Route to Christmas if it looks good. Route to Christmas will not be interesting if YOU don’t contribute.

Not all legs are taken for the interesting routechoice alternatives – some are also taken because the map is interesting – or because it is not straightforward to see what to do on a certain leg. Any comments are welcome – especially if you ran the event chosen for todays leg!
