Route to Christmas: Day 16 2020

Today’s leg in Route to Christmas 2020 is leg 18 in the Leg course from Polish Championships Long at Nodate.

Thanks a lot to Wojciech Dwojak for the tip and some background info and analysis of the leg. Dwojak was advisor for the event, while Bartlomiej Mazan was course setter. From the very beginning the intention was to have a very long leg in the second part of course, which would be a crucial one for the final results. The course was meant to have short, middle distance spirit legs just before control 18, which led to an unprepared route choice for control 19 and some stressful decisions, which not always are the best one.

The leg is as usually first provided without routes – you may take a look at it and think about how you would attack this leg (if the image is too small, you may click on it to get it larger):

Webroute

Next you can draw your own route using the ‘Webroute’ below. Think through how you would attack this leg, and draw the route you would have made. Some comments about why you would choose a certain route are always nice for the other readers.

Then you can take a look at how the runners have solved this leg below. Here are Dwojak’s thoughts about the leg:

Due to 8[ quite narrow map, we knew that there will be mostly two options, left and right, and that we need to weigh the localization of the controls properly, so that both options would be chosen [in the competition]. In the end, from 4 best runners at the finish, two of them chose left and two right and it was interesting to follow how they implement their route choices.

Looking further at the times for each variant, it looks like left and right are approximately equal in time when well executed. There are however several runners who take a non-optimal first part of the option to the right, losing some time here. Also, one runner runs straight and gets some nice training but loses significant time…

Route to Christmas series

The Route to Christmas series is a pre-Christmas tradition at World of O – giving the readers the opportunity to do one Route Choice Challenge each day from December 1st until December 24th. If you have got any good legs in GPSSeuranta or 3DRerun from 2020-competitions, or old forgotten ones which are still interesting, please email me the link at Jan@Kocbach.net, and I’ll consider including it in Route to Christmas if it looks good. Route to Christmas will not be interesting if YOU don’t contribute.

Not all legs are taken for the interesting routechoice alternatives – some are also taken because the map is interesting – or because it is not straightforward to see what to do on a certain leg. Any comments are welcome – especially if you ran the event chosen for todays leg!

Did any fast runners take the full detour to the right that starts going south, i.e. can you compare the time to the spot where they meet up again? This option is hard to discover but it avoids pretty much all climb!
