Route to Christmas: Day 19 2022

In today’s edition of Route to Christmas 2022 we travel to Sweden to a night orienteering race organized just last week. The leg is from a night orienteering cup organized in the Göteborg area. Thanks a lot to Søren Ødum, one of the organizers, for the tip!

Note that this was a mass start, and there was some snow in the terrain, which made it a bit tougher than usual. The leg is forked, but please consider the leg from the middle one of the forked first controls. The leg was used both by the men and the women. Then you can take a look at how the runners have solved this leg below. The first two illustrations below show the men and the last one the women.

If you have the first of the first controls, you have the possibility to run on the small paths to the left – but unfortunately none of the men or women chose this option. We do think it is a good option, though. For both men and women going right is fastest and most easy to execute, which was also the idea from the course setter, especially if you had the central forking control. The ones who run straight are probably tempted by the path running on the middle part of the leg, but many of the ones running straight lose time both out of the control and into the control – and attacking the control is much more difficult when taking the direct route choice.

We had not expected the ones running to the right to run straight out to the road as Simon Imark does it [and which seems to be the fastest route]. Vi had thought that the most optimal would be to run more like August Mollen / Hanna Hanström.
