WOC test race Long Switzerland: Maps, Results & Quick Analysis

WOC 2023 Testrace Long, MEN 2 A_2500

The test races for the World Orienteering Championships (WOC) in Flims Laax in Switzerland concluded with a long distance race in hilly terrain with many route choice options on Tuesday.

As for the middle distance races, the start field was divided into two classes for men and two classes for women based on nationality.  The victories went to Matthias Kyburz (Switzerland) and Kasper Fosser (Norway) in the men’s class, with Tove Alexandersson (Sweden) and Marie Olaussen (Norway) being fastest in the two women’s classes.

Here are split time analysis graphs of the top runners in each of the four classes:

Leg analysis: Selected legs & classes

Below are some of the interesting legs in the competition. Note that only the part of the start field which has the same “forking” is shown for the men’s class, as this is the way the GPS-data is set up in Livelox.

Men 2 B, control 1 – 2: One example of a routechoice leg in the slope where it was clearly faster to run straight than to use the path above or below. Note that in the other part of the class, a quite good time was set by running to the left (up), although still quite a bit slower than the best time straight.

Men 2 B control 5: This was the really long (and decisive) leg of the day. Going too far up or down lost you a lot of time here, but there were several micro route choice options in the variants going more straight. Execution was key for a good time on this leg.

Below you see the routes of Liland and Fosser – Liland’s route is probably the best on this leg. The path up and down midway on the leg seems to be better than Fosser’s choice (around 20 seconds faster).

Women 1 control 5: The women had a similar long leg – with a similar best solution. Here is the leg for Women 1:
