EOC 2024 Relay: Analysis, Maps and Results

Norway’s men and Switzerland’s women won the European Orienteering Championships (EOC) relay in Hungary. Silver and bronze went to Sweden and Switzerland in the men’s class, while Norway and Sweden took the remaining medals in the women’s class.

After very technical orienteering on the middle distance and tricky routechoices on the long distance, the relay was less technical demanding, but still several of the top athletes made costly mistakes.

Men Splits analysis

Below a graphical illustration of the split times for all the common controls in the men’s class are given. The legend shows the initials of the athletes in each team ; here “EK..:” is Norway 1, “VS…” is Sweden 1, “DH…” is Switzerland 1, “ES…” is Finland 1 etc., and the 13 first controls are the first leg, the 13 next the second leg, and so and.

From the illustration it is clear that the relay was very close on the first leg, but then several teams – including Sweden 1 – had trouble between the 15th and 16th common control – which is between the 4th and 6th control (the 5th control was the tricky one). This is where Norway got a gap on the second lap – a gap that only Switzerland managed to close. However, Switzerland made a mistake at the end of the leg, making Norway go out alone in the lead – a job that Norway’s anchor Kasper Fosser handled to perfection. Women Splits analysis

As for the men, the teams where very close together after the first leg. Sweden got big problems on the second leg, though – and again it was the 5th control that gave Sweden and several other teams most trouble (although several also lost time on the first control). Another notable mistake was Hungary’s mistake at the very end of the first leg after a near perfect relay until then – probably Hungary lost a medal here.
