Route to Christmas: Day 7 2025

Today’s leg in Route to Christmas 2025 is from the 7th race of the Swedish League in June – and this time we take a look at a tricky leg in the women’s class.

This is actually the first tip we received in Route to Christmas 2025 – back in the start of  June from Sindre Langaas. He also reported on a big mistake by Vilma von Krusenstierna on this leg – as you will see in the analysis section below she was not the only one missing this control.

This is the first leg in the course – so they head right out from the start into this challenging leg. The leg is as usually first provided without routes – you may take a look at it and think about how you would attack this leg (if the image is too small, you may click on it to get it larger):

Location

Webroute

Next you can draw your own route using the ‘Webroute’ below. Think through how you would attack this leg, and draw the route you would have made. Some comments about why you would choose a certain route are always nice for the other readers.

Then you can take a look at how the runners have solved this leg below. The routes are colored according to fastest split time on the leg, with the fastest routes in green and the slowest in red. As note above, there were quite a lot of mistakes being made here – with only a few runners being within a minute of the fastest split time. Basically there are two routes which are good: Either the fastest one which is to follow the slope and keeping just below the large cliffs, or the somewhat slower one to the left where you climb onto the hill and keep so far left that you don’t have to take so much extra climb when passing the valley halfway on the leg. As you can see further down, Tove Alexandersson went too far down in the slope and had to pass several slow areas, and also struggled towards the control. Going in-between these two main alternatives is simply too slow, giving too much climb – and also going too far down in the slope like Alexandersson.

Below the routes are colored according to variant to give a clearer view of the how many runners chose each variant. As you can see, even if the fastest route is run on one of the blue variants, the overall time difference between red and blue is not very large. It is also a bit tricky to find the good micro-routechoices – especially in the slope, but also on the variants to the left.

Here is an illustration of the route and pace of Tove Alexandersson compared to the fastest split on the leg by Alma Svennerud.

Below you can also see the approximate elevation profile of the three main alternatives.

And finally a more detailed pace analysis.

Route to Christmas series

The Route to Christmas series is a pre-Christmas tradition at World of O – giving the readers the opportunity to do one Route Choice Challenge each day from December 1st until December 24th. If you have got any good legs in GPSSeuranta, 3DRerun, Loggator or Livelox from 2025-competitions, or old forgotten ones which are still interesting, please email me the link at Jan@Kocbach.net, and I’ll consider including it in Route to Christmas if it looks good. Route to Christmas gets interesting due to YOUR contribute!

Not all legs are taken for the interesting routechoice alternatives – some are also taken because the map is interesting – or because it is not straightforward to see what to do on a certain leg. Any comments are welcome – especially if you ran the event chosen for todays leg!
