WOC Long: Grouping analysis using GPS data

With a GPS on all runners, it is now possible to analyze how the runners interact in the forest – also inbetween the controls. The World Champs in Trondheim is the last(?) WOC Long distance with 2 minute start interval (that is, at least for a while, due to an IOF rule change which now dictates 3 minutes start intervals on WOC Long distance).

The 2 minute start interval brought some groups as expected – as you can see in the analysis below. However, probably due to the many long legs and many routechoice options, no big trains of runners formed. Also, the medals do not seem to have been influenced by grouping at this years WOC.

The analysis is made based on the following assumptions:

  • Contact between two runners is defined by the two runners being within a radius of 50 meters based on the GPS data
  • Runner A heading in direction 0 degrees is defined to be in front of runner B if runner B is in the sector defined by 135 degrees to 225 degrees. Correspondingly, runner A heading in direction 0 degrees is defined to be behind runner B if runner B is in the sector 315 degrees to 45 degrees. If runner B is outside these sectors, it is defined as contact, but none of the runners is in front.
  • In addition to calculating if a runner is behind/in front, the average distance between the runners is calculated. This can indicate if a runner is simply following behind as closely as possible (short distance), or doing separate choices (longer distance).
  • Note that there is some GPS inaccuracy, and therefore these numbers can not be fully trusted. However, they give a clear indication, and can be further analyzed by replaying the GPS tracks for selected runners.
  • The grouping analysis is made using the analysis tool 3DRerun (which is currently in closed beta – access may be granted if you send a request to jan@kocbach.net). The analysis is quite experimental, and the results must therefore be used with care.

Below, histograms are shown for the men and women categories. In addition, full tables are shown at the bottom of the article.

Histogram: Grouping at WOC 2010 Long distance – Men

grouping_men

From the histogram above you can see which runners have been mostly in contact with other runners during the race (orange = contact, red = behind, blue = in front). Not surprisingly, Daniel Hubmann has been most in contact with other runners (83 minutes of his race) – being one of the top runners with a very early starting time. He has mostly been in front (70 minutes), but also been behind or in contact for some time. The average distance is as low as 7 meters for all of the 83 minutes – which means Hubmann has never had peace in his long distance race. Other runners who have been in front for large parts of the race are Nordberg (54 minutes first) and Millegård (37 minutes first).

Looking in the other direction, we have Tambasov (60 minutes behind with an average distance of 7 meters) and Fraser (57 minutes behind with an average distance of 9 meters). Next on the list are Forne and Khramov – but these four runners are the only ones which have been behind for more than 35 minutes according to the GPS data analysis.

Note that it is not forbidden to follow another runner according to my interpretation of the IOF rules, but it is rather the responsibility of the course setter and the organizers to avoid following in order to keep the nature of the sport of orienteering.

Histogram: Grouping at WOC 2010 Long distance – Women
grouping_women

Above you see a similar histogram for the womens class. In the womens class we also have four women who have been behind for more than 35 minutes. Geypen on top with nearly 60 minutes and an average distance of 11 meters, then Dodin with 43 minutes, Novikova with 40 minutes and Prince with 36 minutes.

Looking at who has been most in front, we have Andersen on top with 45 minutes – and Alm on the next place with 36 minutes in front. There has generally been more grouping in the womens class than in the mens class, but there are not many clear followers except the four highlighted above.

Jansson, Fasting and Niggli have been nearly alone throughout all of the course according to the GPS data analysis.

Summary table: Grouping at WOC 2010 Long distance – Men

The complete table of calculated data for all runners is shown below. Looking at who has been lonely in the forest – Merz might be one of them – having been inside of a radius of 50 meters compared to other runners for only about 6 minutes…

  1. About following: Why is it that so many people think that breaking §1.2 in the current rules is OK whilst breaking §26.2 in the old ones wasn’t?

§26.10 (previously §26.11) does not limit its scope to section 26, does it?

  2. Just an idea:
It is not so easy to directly disqualify currently a runner for following but why not try to give some penalties. E.g. in formula 1 they have a commission (where are also former drivers) who are giving penalties for breaking of the rules, e.g. moving a driver some positions back on the starting grid, drive through penalty or even moving somebody backwards in the result list. This is also used in cycling – for unfair behaviour in the final finish.
In fotbal for red card or 3 yellows there is stop in next game.
Why not to have something similar in orienteering.
For example for yesterday there is clear evidence of following for Tambasov and Fraser. I can imagine giving to this two runners a 10mins penalty after the race and moving them so backwards in results. I think this might be working and giving a clear signal to everybody what is ok and what is not.

  3. Impressing, how crowded the forests are these days. It is easy to meet up to 8 competitors. Would be nice I you could somehow highlight the ´big ones´ (t.ex. >20min) that one does not loose the overview.

  4. According to your summary table, i have been running behind Mihailovs(Mihailovs (LAT) (Contact: 02:38/Behind: 01:33/Ahead: 00:11). 03 Duncan (GBR) (Contact: 17:34/Behind: 03:36/Ahead: 11:24).)

I saw Mihailovs for not more then 15-20sek. And the statistics with Duncan is not so right. So I guess you can not make such statistics based only on GPS tracking.
But I agree with you that 3min start interval will show a different result.

  5. “36 Nordberg (NOR) 60:43 53:49

Please, explane who is that possble that Norberg was in contact with Millegord. They did not meet in the forest. Something wrong with your statistic

  6. Very nice analyse. Maybe, could be batter to show us only really important data and to leave all data out which are below predefined time interval (bacuse of bad signal, etc). I think that it is important also to decide when you could app. say “someone starts following“. If two runners are together by the GPS signal, let say less than 3min than you could leave all this not very imporatant data out. If you look at splits, runners (also in general) need this time to finish max. two legs. So, if the runner is caught at the middle of the leg he will not change his route choice just because he was caught. He probably already made also plan for the next leg. It is more likely that after that point you could say that runner is really started to follow.

Idea: We could give bonus for best three times on some legs which are difficult or with most route choices. To give credit for good o-technique and maybe also stimulate followers to think and choose their own route choice.

  7. Please include data for Hertner & Fraser, you will then see that Fraser was alone for only 3 controls on the whole course…

  8. @Jens
Millegård and Nordberg met in the butterfly and ran half a loop together (Fraser and Ushkvarok were there as well), so I think the figures are correct…

  9. Sorry for late answers, this was my day off:)

@AH: Based on reading the rules, I think that the runner has responsibility for not following, but still I can’t see how you can disqualify a runner for following with the current rules. Thus, from a fairness perspective against the other competitors, I think following is bad – and the runners should avoid following (and cooperating) based on fairness.

@Peter: I am not sure we should use this kind of analysis to disqualify runners or give them penalties. We should rather highlight the fairness issue and work on making it unacceptable from a fairness perspective to follow/cooperate in large parts of the course, publish this kind of analysis regularly in all big races, and keeping the start interval and spreading methods on a level which makes grouping less important for the final result. Also, do remember that these analyses are not guaranteed to be free of errors – that is still difficult with the GPS technology.

@Outerspace: The graphs are there to highlight the big ones. You can read off based on startnumber (left to right, a few are missing but you spot it quite easily)

@Kiril: According to the GPS Replay, you were behind (within radius of 50 meters) Mihailovs at the end of the butterfly – for more than a minute. Regarding Duncan, I can see from the GPS that you are in contact (within significantly less than 50 meters) for all of the last loop (around 18 minutes) – you being in front most of the time, but Duncan being in front at times. From where the two of you run in the forest, it is quite obvious that there was real contact hre. You were also in contact in some other part of the course, but most of the counted time is from this part. It is not always easy to see who is behind you. As far as I can see, the data is correct.

@Jens: See ME’s answer. They were together in part of the butterfly.

@SK: There is, unfortunately, no information in the system about when there is bad GPS data. Also, rather than making a full analysis and pinpointing “the bad guys”, I wanted to give you all information I have in order to make you up your own opinions. Being together for 10-15 minutes I see as no problem from a fairness perspective – it usually takes some time to make different routes. Only the big ones are a problem in my opinion – and luckily we did not have many of those in this years WOC Long distance.

@Advocate: Including Hertner gives an added grouping time of 11:29 for Fraser, and an additional time behind of 6:34. They were together for so short time that it would (in my opinion) have been difficult to do much differently for Fraser

  10. People need to stop whining about following. Bashing athletes won’t accomplish anything. Longer start intervals will. How about the advantage of later starters over the earlier ones? Should these runners pick different approach to a control as to avoid tracks left by earlier runners? Following someone, even a good orienteer, still involves risk and is not a guarantee.

  11. Definitely there should have been 3 minute intervals – Tambasov would not have met Hubmann and Fraser would not have met Nordberg at no. 8. Tambasov and Fraser would have had to do the long leg by themselves, and probably would have chosen path routes, not the riskier, but faster straight routes taken by Hubmann and Nordberg. If IOF reintroduced the 3 minute interval for this year, why didn’t they enforce it? Will Norway OF be penalised by IOF for not following the rules?

Re Fairness – is it fair when you have someone breathing down your neck for 60 minutes in a race? Your concentration skills must be so much higher than for someone who is running alone, and there is a definite risk that your mind will start to think about this follower and you will make a mistake. I have great admiration for the concentration powers of Hubmann and Nordberg – they should be given a bonus of 1 minute off their time for every 10 minutes they were being followed!

  12. @Sergei: In my opinion, it is firstly a responsibility of the organizers (i.e. longer start intervals, good spreading method, good courses with respect to spreading, etc.), but secondly also a responsibility of the athletes not to “follow blindly” and getting an advantage over other runners in that way. You can say that it still involves risk and is no guarantee, but I don’t think it is fair against other runners if you have had a large advantage by following. However, as we found in a questionnaire, there is a different culture between runners from different countries regarding what is considered fair in this respect, and the reasoning above is my own personal opinion on the matter, probably colored by the culture in Norway about fairness.

@Simmo: IOF reintroduced 3 minute startinterval, but the organizers were allowed to keep the planned 2 minute startinterval as it was too short notice regarding their agreements/planning with TV etc.

  13. <a href="http://www.arua.ch/packfigures/WOC10-LongFinalMen.htm" title="PackFigures WOC 10 Long Final Men

Here is my analysis: What we can see here is, that the expected positive effect of a separation method gets inverted by the circumstance, that the method is often related with a row of short controls in difficult terrain. We know that such a thing alters the chance of group formation with its lack of route choices and a altered probability of making mistakes. Additionally the small start intervall elevates the chance that groups build here after small mistakes provoked here.
