WOC Middle Analysis: Why did Hubmann take the title?

woc2015middlesecondlast2b

[Updated with comment from Gueorgiou] Extremely tight: Four runners were only one control from beating the winner Daniel Hubmann – Lucas Basset, Olle Boström, Fabian Hertner and Thierry Gueorgiou. Magne Dæhlie had a slow start, but ran faster than Hubmann from the 2nd control to the finish.

In this race a 30 second time loss was a big mistake – none of the medalists lost more than 17 seconds to the best split time on any leg. Gold medalist Daniel Hubmann did a very even race – only winning 2 of 26  legs. Silver medalist Lucas Basset  also did a very even race – being within 13 seconds of the best split time on every single leg; this was best of all starters. Thierry Gueorgiou on the other hand had two controls were he lost more than 20 seconds to the best split time – one of them even as much as 50 seconds (see above). That was far too much to win this tight middle distance race.

See the full analysis of the race below the results & map sections. See also this article about the second last control.

Analysis: Decision points

Thierry Gueorgiou control 18 and 24

At control 17 there was double France in the lead – Thierry Gueorgiou was in the lead 16 seconds ahead of Lucas Basset. Then Gueorgiou made a small routechoice mistake, not going far enough around the green area on quite green leg. On control 18 Gueorgiou had lost 23 seconds to the best split – and his lead to Lucas Basset. There was still double France in the top, though.

Update 11/8/2015: Gueorgiou has written a comment about this control on his blog:  It is simply impossible from the map (at least for me) to know which route will be the fastest beforehand.

control18

This mistake would not necessarily have cost Gueorgiou the victory, though, although the gold might have been difficult even without his mistake on the second last control. Here Gueorgiou went into the green through a hole in the fence, and searched for 49 seconds before finding the control. In the end Thierry Gueorgiou was 46 seconds from the Gold medal. This was the same mistake that cost Emma Johansson the victory in the women’s class.

Update 11/8/2015: Gueorgiou has written a comment about this control on his blog:  In my opinion, the map around the penultimate control was not up to the quality which is required at a WOC. I, of course, went there after my race to check the area and was not pleased with what I saw. Well, the fact is that it is not the first time it happens at our major championship, and we can´t even all agree on what is a good enough map. It is also worth mentioning that the map has always been the same for everyone and it is an important skill to manage to keep the risk as low as possible whatever the circumstances.

Lucas Basset control 12

Lucas Basset has his biggest timeloss to control 12 – a total time loss of 13 seconds – 10 seconds to Hubmann. Not much to talk about, but still enough to get him the gold medal with only 3 seconds up there.

Olle Boström control 5

Olle Boström was only 13 seconds from gold in the end, and after the finish his biggest concern was the 10 seconds lost at the last control. However, his performance on the long leg from 4-5 cost him even more time – 26 seconds. The reason for the time loss seems to be that he does not run directly down to the path out of the control, but instead keeps running on the hill parallel with the path. A lost opportunity for beating Hubmann…

longlegbostro

Fabian Hertner control 9

Fabian Hertner lost 38 seconds to the best split time to control 9 – in the end the Swiss was 36 seconds from Gold. Enough to ruin another medal chance for Hertner. The mistake was a typical inaccurate direction and loss of concentration. Nothing special, but still something Hertner will think about in the future.

hertner2

Magne Dæhlie control 1 and 2

Magne Dæhlie – infamous as a slow starter – lost in total 31 seconds at the two first controls – most of this to the first control were he takes a route more to the left than the others, probably due to a slight direction mistake. In the end Dæhlie is 26 seconds behind Gold – this slow start definitely cost him a medal, and he would also have been in the fight for the gold medal with a better start.

Analysis: Route choices

There was only one real routechoice leg – the rest of the course was mostly about going straight, fast and accurate (enough). The routechoice leg was the long leg to control 5. The fastest route here (for the men) was to go slight left, exploiting the paths you could while still not running to far. Running far around on the left of right loses you half a minute or more.

There is also the routechoice leg to control 18 – although short it was important for the competition as Gueorgiou lost time here. Here it is clearly faster to go out to the right.

Analysis: Race development

splitsbr-midd

Fabian Hertner took the lead at the first control and stayed in front until control 2. The race lead then changed between Thierry Gueorgiou (leading at the 3rd control), Fabian Hertner (leading from the 4th to 8th control, losing 38 seconds at the 9th control and falling down to 5th place), Daniel Hubmann (leading at the 9th control, losing 11 seconds and the lead at the 10th), Lucas Basset (leading from the 10th to 11th control, losing 13 seconds and the lead at the 12th), Daniel Hubmann (leading at the 12th control, losing 17 seconds and the lead at the 13th), Lucas Basset (leading at the 13th control), Daniel Hubmann (leading at the 14th control), Lucas Basset (leading at the 15th control, losing 13 seconds and the lead at the 16th), Thierry Gueorgiou (leading from the 16th to 17th control, losing 23 seconds and the lead at the 18th) and Lucas Basset (leading from the 18th to 20th control, losing 11 seconds and the lead at the 21st) until Daniel Hubmann took over the lead at control 21 of 26 controls and kept it until the finish.

EOC 2023: All You Need To Know

The European Orienteering Championships (EOC) starts off individual Sprint in Verona Italy on Wednesday October 4th ...

  1. Very strange this 24th control, when looking at the map it seems like a beginner control but Tero, Emma and more than a dozen of other athletes loose time here… There might be something strange there, at least very tricky.
Anyway a very nice live service, it was very exciting to watch, and so happy for Young Lucas Basset! ;-)

    • I totally agree. The control description of control 24 seems particularly strange to me. It sais: “South-eastern end of a linear thicket”. Without a doubt this thicket is clearly visible on the map beside the fence and the description is correct. But why didn’t they use something that has to do with the fence, because from the map it looks like the control is situated directly beside the fence.
I may be wrong, but thats my opinion on this control.

  2. In the “Maps and GPS-tracking” section, the wrong map (Sprint final) is linked.
    Otherwise great analysis as always!
    Keep up the good work!

  3. is there a picture available somewhere of the fence that may well have cost gueorgiou and johansson the gold medals?

and – the conditions were the same for everyone, of course, but was there possibly a flaw in the map at control 24 and does this have an impact on the fairness of the race?

  4. Jan, many thanks for your outstanding work!

You bring us phenomenal insight to WOC races. I follow races with great respect and high admiration of top runners. What level of mental toughness on top of technical skills are needed to win. It’s great to see how wide potential winner’s field is getting. In the end, no matter how good they perform, they are out of medals with 30 sec mistake. In my eyes this is sport at it’s best.

  5. Tornai Szabolcs

It would most interesting to know what Thierry and Emma actually tell about this “tricky” control and why they made this banal mistake. Do anybody know what they said?

  6. Links to some pictures and opinions about that control here

    http://www.attackpoint.org/discussionthread.jsp/message_1087758

Cat Taylor made a comment and in the absence of comments from Johansson and Gueorgiou, I for one tend to rely on her note since she was 5th so clearly visited that control under similar race conditions…

  7. I’m hopelessly unqualified to criticise the great Thierry, but assuming the contours are right – and this seems to be borne out by Jan’s video, shouldnt he have noticed he was going uphill and the control was on the flat?

  8. So now the focus for Thierry’s defeat shifts to control 17-18. I guess if you throw enough mud, some of it will stick. But here I agree with him.

This section was subject to extensive forestry work in April and should not, in my opinion, have been used because nobody ever test ran there in summer conditions. But the planner doesn’t always get his way. You can read more details on my AP log.

If Thierry is offering to prerun WOC courses once he’s retired, I’m sure future organisers will be delighted. this can only be good. But let’s not pretend it’s easy – the former WOC Champion who preran the course just one day before told me it was “far too long”… And does anyone believe an elite test runner would forget to turn right, go straight into the thick undergrowth looking for a fence and 24, just so they could run through the thick undergrowth beside the fence when the control is just along the path? And even if they could, would they figure out that the fence would get knock down some time in the next year, maybe during the race?
