Fantasy WC: Bushmen on top

Posted by Jan Kocbach, 12 Jun 2009@12:00

worunners_s.jpg
The Bushmen Team with Kristoffer Fiane Pedersen as manager has taken the lead in the Fantasy World Cup after this years seconds World Cup race – the NOC Sprint in Salo, Finland. Anders Skarholt’s Scary-team dropped three places, and is now in fourth place – 13 points down on Bushmen. We have got 10 teams within 25 points – and still everything is very open.

Note! Results are preliminary as I am still waiting for official World Cup results at the IOF site . Updated 13/6/09 12:00 CET: Official World Cup results are now up at IOF site, and the Fantasy World Cup results have been updated accordingly. Note that runners who were disqualified in the Final – and runners who were in 12th, 13th and 14th spot in the Qualification – also got World Cup points.

Time for Last Jukola Preparations

Posted by Jan Kocbach, 12 Jun 2009@8:00

lastjukola_s.jpg
Jukola is only one day away – and it is time to make the last Jukola preparations. There are old maps of the area to be studied, map samples of the new map, and lots of Jukola trainings made by other runners which may be relevant. Below I’ve collected some of the most relevant information.

I had planned to make a few Webroutes on the old Jukola map as well and publish them here, but found it wise not to, in case I would get “unlucky” and get some legs correct (which might by unpopular among the Jukola route planners). So I guess you’ll have to that part of the job yourself – you find the map below…

Old Map for Jukola 2009

The organizer provides the old map on the Jukola 2009 page, but with an annoying red ‘Forbidden area’ text on it. There is however also another version available on a Doma site:

Map samples: Competition map for Jukola 2009

In addition to old maps, there are map samples available at Jukola2009.net – thumbnails of which are shown below. Try to find these on the old map – it ain’t easy…

DSQ of Weltzien reverted due to map error

Posted by Jan Kocbach, 11 Jun 2009@10:00

weltzien67.jpg
A small drama involving Audun Weltzien after the NOC Sprint Finals yesterday: As everybody could see during the GPS-tracking (see screenshot above – full tracking here), Weltzien ran through a hedge marked with ‘Impassable vegetation’ between controls 6 and 7. Thus he was disqualified by the organizers. However, a protest from Weltzien made the organizers revert the DSQ.

- Note that the hedge looks to be drawn with thickness of about 0.2 mm [Note! According to comment below, the hedge was drawn with thickness 0.3 mm on the map], while the minimum width of a hedge of this type is 0.4 mm according to the ISSOM, Håvard Tveite – leader of the Norwegian mapping group – comments. – Thus it is very difficult to see that this hedge is drawn as impassable. It looks like several other runners have been tricked by the same, as several others have also started in this direction.

- Audun Weltzien called me, and I advised him to deliver a protest on the disqualification, Tveite continues. According to Tveite, the protest was followed, and Weltzien is now in the official results of the organizers in the 19th spot for the World Cup. The official results at the IOF page – including WRE and World Cup points are however not posted yet (thus no updated Fantasy World Cup standings as of yet).

NOC Sprint: Fastest route leg by leg

Posted by Jan Kocbach, 10 Jun 2009@20:00

Todays NOC Sprint did not have a lot of route choice alternatives – the most important thing was to make a quick decision for each leg – and avoid small mistakes. For the longer legs, mostly the alternatives where similar in time. Below you see the route choice giving the best split for each of the longer legs in both men and women categories taken from the GPS Tracking.

If you want to further analyze the race, use the following links:

All pictures below are screenshots from the excellent GPS Tracking, provided by the NOC organizers / Tracker. Note that this is the route which gave the fastest split for each leg – and not necessarily the best route. E.g. Khramov had a fantastic last part of his race, winning all legs from control 12 to the finish.

The NOC Sprint Live Blog can be replayed below. The GPS tracking worked surprisingly well for a sprint, and with GPS Tracking on all runners, the NOC Sprint was excellent entertainment for the viewers. We had around 1800 viewers watching part of the Live Blog today – why not join in yourself on the next Live Blog on Jukola?
