Another gold medal for Tove Alexandersson (Sweden) – and gold for Gleb Tikhonov (Russia).  In hot weather in the second largest city of Slovakia, Kosice, the Nordic countries dominated with 4 out of 6 medals and 13 within Top 20.

Medals among the men went to Tikhonov, Jan Petrzela (Czech Republic) and Eskil Kinneberg (Norway). Among the women Emma Klingenberg (Denmark) and Frida Sandberg (Sweden) took silver and bronze, respectively. This was Junior World Championships medal number 18 for Alexandersson!

Fantastic performance by Alexandersson

Alexandersson’s run was a very impressive one – the Swedish runner who already has a World Cup victory among the seniors won all splits except two – and was never more than 2 seconds behind the best split time (see splitsbrowser above).

– 2 seconds from best split time at EVERYTHING. #SICK. Good race? YES!, Alexandersson Tweeted after the race (translated from Swedish).

The men’s race was a much tighter one – but Tikhonov took the victory with 17.3 seconds in the end after a very strong performance in the last half of the race.

Maps and courses

Today’s course was a traditional city sprint in a flat city – but still with quite many route choice options.

– The course had lots of alleyways, and you had to count where to turn. There were a few dead end traps, Canadian Trevor Bray explains at the Team Canada page.

According to the Canadian runner who finished 161st, there were a lot of spectators in the streets.

– The alleys looked like regular doorways so they were hard to see when running at high speed. It was weird to have so many people on the streets watching us. In some places officials waved people to the side when we came running.

Another of the Canadian runners explained that even though the course was challenging, it could have been trickier.

– The course was not as technical as it could have been. There were no difficult traps, but it was still challenging at the high speed.

  1. I’m only a little familiar with Sprint maps, as we don’t have many Sprints where I’m from– can someone tell me what the light shade of pink is? Thanks!
