The Long Qualification courses had one really interesting route choice leg – the long leg from 4-5 in the men’s heats / 2-3 in the women’s heats. The rest of the course was all about accurate orienteering – especially direction running and actually finding the control point.
Typically, the route choice leg was not the most decisive in the course – however the route choice legs may very well be decisive in the final, so let us take a look at it. There was GPS-tracking only for the men, and thus this article is focused on the men’s course.
Men Heat 3
Above you see selected routes for the long leg in Heat 3 (click on it for bigger illustration). The routes are colored by split time – the fastest being green and the slowest red. Generally you can observe that the northern routes are faster (green), whereas the southern routes are slower. This is, however, just the case for this specific 5th control. As you will see below, the fastest route in Heat 1 is run on the south side of the big marsh.
In Heat 1 Peeter Pihl is the fastest with 12:14, one second ahead of Baptiste Rollier. Tue Lassen going all the way north on the road loses nearly a minute – nearly all of that is due to the extra length. Lassen runs around 400 meter longer than Rollier. Omdal loses some 15 seconds by avoiding the road (road running is not Omdal’s biggest strength) and running shorter. Even shorter runs Tero Föhr, but he chooses a route which is close to the marsh which is very wet these days.
Men All Heats
Here you see a similar illustration, except runners in all heats are compared. This is not a fully fair comparison, as the heats have different controls. It nevertheless illustrates a few points,
- Bertuks runs a very good leg urther to the south than most of the other favourites. Good terrain knowledge based on similar terrain in Latvia, or just running very fast today? Generally Bertuks had high speed – several smaller mistakes – but still won his heat.
- Gueorgiou also runs at the south side of the line, but looses compared to Bertuks on the last part of the leg. Neither marsh nor up-and-down in the end of the leg seems very fast.
- Novikov runs to the south – with a nice, big S-curve. Too long to run south – and too much up and down. Around 2 minutes lost.
- Hubmann runs north – with high speed – and makes a good leg to the control point his heat has.
- Merz also runs well on the leg, but makes a mistake into the control.
There is no simple conclusion on this leg valid for all heats, but generally although there are some time differences, a well executed route choice should not lose you more than 60 seconds – and several runners had larger mistakes than that elsewhere.
