Interview: Boström about Course of the Year 2013

wocsprintmen2013

– My fav course of the year would have to be the WOC 2013 Sprint. I won with big marginal even without being able to find all the best routechoices, World Champion sprint from Vuokatti, Finland earlier this year, Mårten Boström, says when asked about his favourite course this year (see the course above – click for full size).

– The course included most elements of challenge one can think of in a sprint race including zigzags being the fastest route, leaving controls in 180′ opposite to control line, new fences and legs with equal routchoice options – altough we’ll have to wait for water obstacles till Venice., Boström comments.

47 fences – 616 meters

And there is no arguing that lot of work was put into the WOC sprint course. In addition to the usual course setting, there were total of 47 fences which made total length of 616 meters. In the map sample below (from the WOC 2013 page) you can see all extra fences marked red around the existing fences. According to the organizers, some extra fences were there to make orienteering more difficult, some were placed in order to make the competition fair and safe, and a few shorter fences were also used as control points. In addition some wild stories were told about the how the course setter used hours after hours to prepare everything 100%.

About “Course of the Year 2013″: The rules are simple: Suggest a course from a competition or training in 2013 using this link, and state the reason why you think this course deserves to be “The course of the Year 2013″. The best among all the suggestions will be chosen – and there will be a voting process among the readers of “World of O”. Sponsor prizes of around 3500 Euro are to be won by the ones suggesting / voting:  Andalucia O-Meeting in Spain February 14th-16th, MOC in Italy March 13th-15th, Bergen Sprint Camp in Norway January 31st-February 2nd, 3+3 Sälen in Sweden June 27th-29th, Ilves-3 in Estonia May 2nd-4th, OOCup or Bubo Cup in Slovenia at the end of July/start of August, Orievents training camp/NAOM in Portugal in January,  Portugal O-meeting in Portugal March 1st-4th, the North Americal Champs in Canada October 10th-13th, and 3 days of Trenches in Italy May 31st-June 2nd. See all details about the sponsors & prizes below – to me all of them are tempting!

Q: Did you set any courses in 2013? If so, is it possible to share the best (in your opinion) with World of O’s readers?

None of them are publishable since the actual course setter usually made an even better course

I’ve set quite a few courses on old maps etc. in preparations for races but none of them are publishable since the actual course setter usually made an even better course…

Q: In which race or training did you have most fun in 2013 – and why?
I remember this one training we did with the national team in April in Barbate, Spain really clearly. It was a 6x1km/2′ interval orienteering with at least Pasi Ikonen, Antti Parjanne, Aaro Asikainen & Hector Heinz running together with me. It was cold and rainy, but I was really well focused for the training as I knew the terrain would be challenging but fast. I was 3rd in from the 1st course, but was able to squeeze into the first place on all the other loops doing the right things all the way through. That made me confident that I could do well at WOC Long distance and I ended up running another whole loop around the courses picking up the pace again towards the end…

[Editors note: See Pasi Ikonen’s description of the same training in his training diary]

Q: What is the race you look most forward to in 2014?
I think WOC Sprint in Venice will offer some awesome challenges in sweet setting and see it as my main goal for next season, but I am equally as much looking forward for the fantastic terrains at high altitude at Swiss Orienteering Week.

[Editors note: Yesterday, Street View for Venice (sprint final) and Burano (sprint qualification) was published in Google maps. That means that drawing a good preparation map will be a lot easier – the Street View cameras even used boats and followed the small narrow streets with wearable cameras. Below an orienteering control in Burano and interactive Street View from the WOC final area]

Q: What is the worst course you run in 2013?
Finlands Huippuliiga Final in Teisko, where the course was UNFORKED even if all 40 guys started within a few minutes (Note: check what the time was)!!

[Editors note: You see the map below – and can read about the race here]

Q: Which elements in an orienteering course are most important for you in order for it to be a good course?
Route choices including surprising variants, long legs (no short legs needed!), legs with steepness/bogs/thickets forcing to vander off from the control line.

Rules

The following rules are given for “The course of the Year 2013″.

  • The course must have been run in competition or training in 2013.

  • You must give a reason for why you think this course deserves to be named “The course of the Year 2013″ (or why it is the best course you run/set this year). All reasons are valid.
