– It kept me busy all the way and I found it challenging enough considering my physical abilities on that day, Edgars Bertuks says about his favourite course in 2013 – the WOC Middle distance.
And from this interview with the Latvian World Champion middle distance from 2012, it is quite clear that WOC has been – and is – the main focus for Bertuks. Read the complete interview below.
Q: What was the best course you run in 2013 – and why (please provide a link to the map or the map as an attachment)?
Since I haven’t been competing in extraordinary terrains so much, my vote goes for WOC middle distance final. It kept me busy all the way and I found it challenging enough considering my physical abilities on that day.
Q: Did you set any courses in 2013? If so, is it possible to share the best (in your opinion) with World of O’s readers?
No, not really. Maybe I have planned few training for myself or team mates, but can’t recall any particular one.
[Editors comment: Even if Bertuks has no courses to share, I found this video from a training in January this year which is enjoyable.]
Q: In which race or training did you have most fun in 2013 – and why?
That would be WOC long final. I could virtually run faster at any given moment and that didn’t happen before during the season. I totally love that feeling – when everything is possible.
[Editors comment: I spent a lot of time with the course setter – and many hours with the map & GPS-data to analyze the courses – and especially the women’s course had a lot of nice tricks which worked very well. See the complete analysis for men here and for women here.]
Q: What is the race you look most forward to in 2014?
WOC long distance. It will be very challenging if not most in my career so far.
Illustration: Bertuks with his bronze medal from WOC long distance 2012. In 2014 Bertuks wants another medal in WOC long distance.
Q: What is the worst course you run in 2013?
Sorry to say that, but 2nd day of Kapa 3 days competition in Latvia. The course itself would have been very interesting and fun if the terrain weren’t totally under water at the moment competition took place. I think it should have been considered beforehand.
[Editors comment: This course was actually suggested at the “Course of the Year 2013″ by Taivo here – interesting… The terrain sure looks wet even on a dry day from the map.]
Q: Which elements in an orienteering course are most important for you in order for it to be a good course?
I like when there is some diversity between legs and challenges in those. In my opinion those are often too similar (length of separate legs) in long distance races. I also like when it’s kind of “same for everyone” meaning that I like when basic rules and skills of orienteering work the way it should be. Less about luck in short. WOC in France was fun, but bad example of that.
Q: What are your goals for next year – and do you plan to change your training and/or focus in order to reach your goals in 2014?
My main goal is WOC long distance. I will continue with the training system I had for last 2 years, but will focus more on terrain running since I want to get to the level where I could run well during whole season and then peak in WOC.
[Editors comment: Below is a course from the neighbor terrain from WOC long distance 2014 – from a WRE race in late September this year. The orienteering looks like it will be very interesting with many route choice options.]
Q: Will you focus on the World Cup even if all races count in the overall next year?
As for now I have planned to take part in all WC races, but it won’t be my main goal so there can be changes in that during season.
Q: Thanks a lot for your time, Edgars – and good luck at WOC in Italy!
