Course of the Year: Gustav Bergman shares many courses with us

– It was a good course that lured you into high speed the first controls, and then became a lot trickier before you had to speed up again towards the end, Swedish top runner Gustav Bergman tells about his favourite course of 2013.

The course Bergman is talking about is the course from 25manna-korten –  in a terrain which was very special.

– A big burned area completely changed the forest, and made it completely unique – the rest of the terrain was typical detailed Stockholm-style, Bergman explains.

Note that there has been some controversy about the map – that doesn’t take anything away from the course though… Read the complete interview below.

Q:Did you set any courses in 2013? If so, is it possible to share the best (in your opinion) with World of O’s readers?

I have set some courses, but none that is any special, really. I kind of like this one, though, with the technical countour at night.

Q: In which race or training did you have most fun in 2013 – and why?

I think the one I enjoyed most probably was O-ringen stage 1, with it’s beautiful nut tough terrain. I also really liked the sprint at Antalya O Days in February, being a really technical and special kind of sprint.

Q: What is the race you look most forward to in 2014?

Probably the World Champs. I haven’t thought about it that much, but of course WOC is always something to look forward to! I also think that the Swedish champs is going to be very nice, taking place in Uppsala. I really like the terrain there, so I’m hoping for some great races.

Q: What is the worst course you run in 2013?

It is always difficult to tell what the worst was, but one that I was disappointed with was the O-ringen sprint. A very easy course, with a lot of running.

But you can’t really say that this was the worst course of the year, maybe just the one I was most disappointed with.

Q: Which elements in an orienteering course are most important for you in order for it to be a good course?

It’s hard to say! For me, it is usually all about the experience when you run, so the terrain plays a big part in it. I’m also quite weak for really tough long legs and really technical orienteering, so if you can combine those 3 you’re definitly on the right track!

Q: What are your goals for next year – and do you plan to change your training and/or focus in order to reach your goals in 2014?

My big goal is WOC, and I am hoping to do even better than this year. I’m really going to do anything different, I’ll just stick to my long term training plan and that means a little bit more training this year compared to last, but it is all part of the plan. Hopefully I will be able to take another step physically, and by that do even better results than this year.

Q: Will you focus on the World Cup even if all races count in the overall next year?

Well, I will probably do like I did this year: Run most of the competitions, but only focusing on WOC. That works quite well for me, I think, and I think that if all the races count I will have a better chance of getting a good position, since I am always quite high in the results, never having any really bad runs.
