Orienteering Achievement of 2013: Your Nominations count!

achievement2013_plakat_sp

Suggest a nomination for the Orienteering Achievement of 2013 and win some great prizes! Remember that we are not necessarily looking for the best orienteer/team of 2013 – but rather the best achievement. There is one class for men and one for women – juniors can also be suggested, the same goes for teams.

Among all really good nomination texts, we will draw one or two of the great sponsor prizes (more about the prizes below in the sponsor section). The number of prizes drawn will depend on the number of nomination suggestions being posted. Many suggestions = more prizes drawn.

  • Write your nomination text at the World of O Facebook pageRemember to add a note about which sponsor prize you are interested in – it would be a pity to win a prize you are not interested in?! Check the sponsor section below for the details.
  • As an alternative for non-Facebook users, write your nomination text as a comment below

To get you started, see the nominees for 2012 along with their stories/nomination texts here:

Great Sponsorprizes for “Lucky voters”!

  2. Prizes from our sponsors will be drawn among all people voting.
  3. In addition some sponsor prizes will be drawn among the ones suggesting GOOD nomination texts. Among all really good nomination texts, we will draw one or two of the great sponsor prizes.

Route to Christmas: Day 19 2024

Today’s leg in Route to Christmas 2024 is a long leg from the long distance ...

  1. Simone Niggli of course! She had a great year with three medals at Woc and I hope she would come to 2014 Woc next year… She is not only a super athlete, she’s also a super person. I was very amazed when one day during Woc a child asked her to take a picture and she was going away very fast, but even if she was in hurry she stopped to take the photo. Everyone have to learn from her and not only o-skills!
And about the best man: Marten Bostrom! He came again to run in orienteering and he won the sprint at Woc!! Amazing! And also he did a lot of races (he came in Italy too) and winning the title of best 2013 orienteer he will never leave orienteering again and he will train harder for next years.
(I am interested in Lipica Open or 5+5Days)

  2. MEN:Ukraine WOC Realay Team: Taking an unexpecting bronze medal in the WOC realay. Making a stand that more nations wants to fight about the medals.

WOMEN:Tove Alexandersson: Taking 2 WOC medals at very young age and almost beating Niggli inthe overall WC.

    Sponsor wish: Five+Five

  3. Carolina Delgado

I vote for Daniel Hubmann in men because of his fantastic results just after recovering from his injury. He was second in the world cup ranking and did very good results in woc.

I vote for Minna Kauppi in women because she did very good races in woc and she was nearly there with two 4th places in the long and middle distance.

( I´m interested in 3 days of trenches)

  4. Mårten Boström. After being away from top orienteering for several years and not making it to the Team for WOC 2012, he decided to go for it and he made it, crushing the field by 17 seconds in a surprisingly demanding WOC Sprint in Vuokatti. He became the face of the WOC 2013 in Finland.
    (Riga Orienteering Week)

  5. Men: Thierry, gold in WOC long, fantastic leg in relay, and proving in the middle that he’s human (and after all thanks to that we’ll can see him in Italy…)

Women: Simone. No words for describing her. The best of all times!

    I’m interested in Cerkno Cup.

  6. Male: Leonid Novikovs race in WOC middle. Biggest suprise in WOC this Year – topped up with gold also in the relay. Perfect exampe of performing when it matters the most.

Female: OK Pan Århus Venla victory. Danish domination in Venla relay with a young team.
(Of course all the gold medals Sime once again got is impressive, but as that was allready nominated above I had to come up with somethin else.) :)

    [MCO2013]

  7. Switzerland has not only cheese, chocolate and watches – there’s as well an
Impressive athlete coming from the small country in central Europe, who
Managed to dominate the orienteering world for years. Beside of all her success she made
Orienteering getting more popular in all the years. She was all the time close to her fans and
Never got arrogant, as other big athletes sometimes do. Probably she is the living
Example, how the orienteering spirit should be lived.

Now, as the queen of orienteering retired, the stage is open for new stars in our rising sport.
Impossible is nothing, but her «Palmarès» might be tricky to achieve:
Gold, 23-times (and those are only the ones from WOC) and an almost never ending list of
Great results. Every runner is doing big efforts throughout the whole season, always
Listening to body and mind, which makes our sport fascinating every second we do it, but
Imagining what SHE did in her career, she deserves this prize one last time!

    Sun-O, btw…

  8. I have to say it’s really difficult to point out just two names, especially taking into account the outstanding figure of Simone. I am not adding any word to describe her brightness.

    Here’s my suggestions:

MEN: Matthias Merz. He deserves a nomination, after a long top orienteer period, and as an homage to his career.

WOMEN: Tove Alexandersson. She’s already proven herself as a greatly raising star in orienteering, and I believe she will show her power more and more in next years. She has also shown to be at very top level in international competition, and almost winning the WC while Simone still competing is a great result and hope for the future.

Prize: 3-day of trenches or Lipica Open

  9. One of the really big achievements of 2013 is the Austrian relay bronze medal at the World Games in Cali. Nearly noone thought of an Austrian medal there. And all four members of the team made one of their best performances ever:
First runner GERNOT KERSCHBAUMER came in on top together with Murray Strain; the junior ANNA NILSSON SIMKOVICS stayed “cool, calm and collected” and remained close to the world top female runners competing there, ROBERT MERL as third Austrian runner also kept the really good position and the finisher URSULA KADAN could beat the fast Czech girl Tereza Novotná by better route choice in the finish.
And all four managed something which not all top runners were able to: they made nearly no mistakes and checked out all the right controls!

If the mixed team does not fit in the scheme “men or women” they would deserve a special extra prize for their focussed, ambitious and courageous performance!

Preferred prize: Lipica Open or Riga Orienteering Week

  10. MEN: Matthias Kyburz – World Cup winner and double World Games champion. It’s not so easy to dominate in men’s class.
WOMEN: Nadiya Volynska – Maybe she is not the best but she could be a best newcomer to very top, also 3rd place in World Games middle.

BUT why only nominate foot-o athletes?

MEN (MTBO): Tõnis Erm – 2 golds in 2 days in a row, plus relay bronze at WMTBOC.
WOMEN (MTBO): Marika Hara – 2 golds from WMTBOC and gold from EMTBOC, also World Cup winner.

    In ski-o I don’t know the names so well…

    (Riga O-Week)

  11. Thanks for all great suggestions & nomination texts so far! I’m just collecting them and have started writing the nomination texts – there is still room for more though :)

  12. Aleksandra Voytova

The Best of the best men:Leonid Novikov of course, because this year he scored two gorgeous victory at the World Championships, and he showed good results on 10mia,Jukola,25-manna… and just because he is a wonderful person.

The Best of the best women:I only need a few seconds to think about it because there are no other options, strong, beautiful and wonderful mother of three children Simone Niggli.
    (3 days of Tranches)

  13. My vote in category women goes to Merja Rantanen for her WOC Middle Distance bronze medal. She’s already had a long and successful international career, but no personal WOC medal until now. After nearly having dropped from the Finnish team due to bad qualification run before WOC her performance before home crowd in the middle distance final was phenomenal. Bronze well deserved.

  14. Why not add the relay to the usual men and women category. I´ve already seen some relay teams in the suggestions.
