Interesting articles

The Jukola webpage has several interesting English-language articles in preparation for the Jukola relay. Some of them:

  • Interview with Kalevan Rasti coach about how KR prepares for Jukola. – We examine old maps and speculate about the courses. Usually we’ve succeeded well with this and haven’t faced any surprises in the race itself. However, most important in preparation in the mental side.
  • Will a Swedish Team win Jukola again? 23 years since last time –  The [IFK Göteborg] coach, former national team member Fredrik Löwegren regards controlling the rhythm changes as a key factor in Jukola. […] Already the three first legs are decisive, since in Jukola it’s very difficult to come back to the race from further behind like often in Tiomila.
  • Discussion on favourites in the men’s class. – The number one challenger from many years back, the Norwegian Halden SK is racing without their star Olav Lundanes who’s still recovering from slight overtraining. On the other hand, substituting Olav is e.g. the Finnish national team “cannon” Fredric Portin, who represented the Jukola host Paimion Rasti just on last season.
  • Discussion on favourites in the women’s class.  – The recent Tiomila victor Domnarvet has twice taken also the Venla challenge trophy home. National team stars Emma Johansson and Lena Eliasson are a strong frame for the team. According to coach Peter Löfås, the Venla relay is often a bit difficult race for Swedish teams. The terrain looks challenging, and margins are small so one mistake might be all it takes to make a difference.

Map and terrain

Two different renderings of the Jukola area from LIDAR data are available: One version made by  one version made by Terje Mathisen (top of page) – and one version made by Jarkko Ryppöö (above this paragraph).

The area consists mainly of bare-rock terrain typical of southwestern Finland. Runnability is above the average. In addition to bare-rock hills, predominant terrain types are heath forest and a rather extensive, overgrown sandpit area including ponds. Some marsh areas also exist. In some parts of the area there are plenty of logging areas and different-aged planted forest that slow running. The relief is moderate. Take caution on the steepest slopes! The highest and most dangerous cliffs are cordoned off from above with a white and/or red-and-white tape with text ”Jukolan viesti – STOP”.
