The terrain in today’s JWOC Middle Qualification required a lot of experience in Scandinavian terrain – and thus the Scandinavian and Swiss runners had a significant advantage. Heat winners were Imark (SWE), Andersoson (SWE) and Ojanho (FIN) for the men and Hagström (SWE), Müller (SUI) and Koskinen (FIN) for the women.
Most impressive today: Sara Hagström’s 3 minute win in women’s heat C – Hagström was among the big favourites in the sprint yesterday but had a bad race and was disqualified. Another race to note: Yesterday’s silver medalist Heidi Mårtensson had a big miss of around 10 minutes at the first control, but still managed to get into the final, nearly 12 minutes behind winner Hagström in heat C.
60 to the final
20 runners went to the final in each of the three heats – home country Norway was most successful with all 6 + 6 runners to the final. Of the non-Scandinavian countries Switzerland was successful as always – in addition note how the Czech women had a great day with all 6 women to the final.
