Baptiste Rollier takes us to Switzerland and the Alps!

sowday4_part

[Updated with M21E course and higher quality map] – The terrain was amazing and the course challenging as there were many different terrain types in the same race, Swiss national team runner Baptiste Rollier says about his favourite orienteering course in 2016 – the 4th day of Swiss O-Week.

Rollier is retiring from top level orienteering after a long career on the Swiss National Team – this spring he won a European Championships Gold medal in the relay in Czech Republic. Even if he is retiring, orienteering will still be an important part of his life. As Rollier says in the interview below; – Orienteering is a passion and I will now have more chances to choose the nicest places out there.

Update November 20th 2016: Thanks to course setter Patrick Kunz for M21E course and higher quality map.

Read on for a long interview with Baptiste Rollier. This interview is part of the “Course of the Year 2016″ contest organized by World of O. In the introduction article you can suggest YOUR favourite course for “Course of the Year 2016″ – there are prizes to be won worth more than 5500 Euro.

Q: What was the best course you run in 2016 – and why?

Swiss O week stage 4 is my favorite for 2016. The terrain was amazing and the course challenging as there were many different terrain types in the same race. In general SOW 2016 offered very good terrains. [GPS comparison 3DRerun here].

Q: What was the most interesting orienteering terrain you ran in in 2016 – and why?

OOcup in Austria, Italy and Slovenia was amazing. All terrains had different characteristics and were very technically and very challenging. Unfortunately I was not running Ultimate Class, but I got lost anyway in some places.

Q: Usually the courses in interesting terrains are the ones you remember. But can you remember a very good course you ran in “boring” terrain this year?

This one goes to World Cup Long distance in Switzerland. The terrain is typical from Swiss Mittelland and not know to be the nicest for orienteering. The model event for this race was really green and with a lots of blackberry bush and undervegetation. But the race itself was set in a way so that the best parts of the map could be used and offered good route choices and way an enjoyable long distance.

Q: What is the worst course you ran in 2016?

This is always hard to write it down when organizers invest lots of time for a race and then runner don’t like it. But this was a national race in east part of Switzerland

Q: Did you set any courses in 2016? If so, is it possible to share the best (in your opinion) with World of O’s readers?

As a course setter I had the chance to set the JWOC relay. It was a very interesting experience to imagine what the runners would do during while running the course and where would be the decisive part of the course. I think, we succeeded in offering a challenging course and the feedbacks from the runners where positive.

Q: What is the most interesting routechoice leg you remember from 2016? Did you take the right choice?

EOC long offered many good route choice. The terrain was very suitable for a long distance. I took some good route choice but also some bad ones.

Q: What are your plans for the future now that you retired from international top orienteering? Will you continue to run international races?

I will continue working for Trimtex but increase the percentage. At the moment the training amount is quite low and playing with our 2 years old boy is the daily physical activity. But I want to run some international races in the future as Tiomila with Kalevan Rasti and some multidays events. Orienteering is a passion and I will now have more chances to choose the nicest places out there.

Q: Have you got any plans to do any work within orienteering in the future?

Yes, with Trimtex I’m connecting with orienteering and I’ve also other plans in coaching.

Q: Thanks a lot for a very interesting interview, Baptiste!

  1. During fourth day of Swiss o-week (his favourite) the speaker kept warning the runners: “Due to the rocky ground covered with dense undervegetation, don’t read map and run at the same time.” Baptiste says he will go to the nicest areas now as he retires. I guess what he defines as “the nicest” will be a bit different from the majority :-)
