Jukola – the largest orienteering relay in the world – starts Saturday at 22:00 CET (23:00 local time). 9 hours earlier at 13:00 CET the women start their relay – the Venla relay. Here you find all the information you need about the Jukola and Venla relays. This is the 70th edition of the Jukola relay and the 41st edition of the Venla relay.
Jukola 2018 is organized close to Lahti – and there will again be a high quality international webTV-broadcast available from both the Jukola and Venla relays (Euro 16.-). A lot of live GPS tracking and interesting interviews are promised. This international broadcast also has its own director, with 20 cameras in use.
A look in the back-mirror: IFK Göteborg won Jukola 2017 after an exciting relay – their first Jukola win ever. IFK was in the lead throughout nearly all of the relay – building up a 7(!) minute lead already after 3 legs. These 7 minutes shrank slowly leg by leg – until Eskil Kinneberg had only 1:40 left when starting on the last leg with Koovee’s Daniel Hubmann following in second place. Kinneberg decided the relay for IFK after a thriller on the last leg – which opened with a 2 minute mistake by Kinneberg. In the Venla relay, Alfta-Ösa won ahead of Swiss OL Norska after being in the lead all the way from start to finish.

Map and terrain
The competition terrain is dominated by many ice-age formed depressions along the edges of which are pine forests and rocky areas (see old map above). The terrain is rocky in many places, but there is are also areas of good runability. The deepest depressions are around 40 meters deep but the majority of the depressions are much flatter.
Illustration: Part of the Jukola 2018 area as seen in MapAnt – red contours are depressions. See complete MapAnt-map centered on this area here.
The area has undergone normal amounts of forestry work and these can be seen more clearly in the eastern part of the terrain where there are clear tree line patterns. There has been limited amount of fresh forest thinning, however visibility on the ground is good. All in all on offer is one of Finland’s largest genuine depression filled terrains. More information and pictures of terrain.

Route choices in Jukola 2018 terrain
The Jukola website has published several route choice “tasks” on their website with corresponding solutions which are interesting to read ahead of the relay:

- Task 2 solution
- Task 3 solution
- Task 4 solution
- Task 5 solution (solution seems to be only available in Finnish)

Thanks for the round up!
Do you know in which language the web-TV broadcast commentary is being broadcast? It doesn’t seem to mention on the organisers web page.
Thanks again.
JC
Should be in English.
👍
A small excursion to possibly useless statistics: after removing empty and obviously vacant names, there are 6289 registered persons for Venla and 12914 persons for Jukola – totalling 19203 persons.
Assuming (for simplicity) that a given runner can only run once at Venla and/or once at Jukola, there are 6227 unique names at Venla and 12582 uniques as Jukola.
Merging those and looking for duplicates only, we find 531 – that’s nealy 3% of total – names presumed to be running BOTH races.
Good luck to everybody!
WEB-TV DOES NOT WORK!! REALLY DISAPPOINTING SERVICE THIS YEAR!
Has anyone found out why web-tw dont’t work, and how we can get it to work?
Collect the money works without any problems, but then – as every year – the web tv dońt works! I want my money back
Now they want me to pay again…. Really bad.
It works! For two seconds
I worked a few minutes. And it died again …
Did everyone loose connection at aprox 22:40? 16€ for 5,7km…
yep
yes, lost it at approx 22.40. Anyone have Connection?
I hope we can re-watch the lost km’s :(
This page isn’t working
kepit.tv didn’t send any data.
ERR_EMPTY_RESPONSE
From the organizers:
I’m sorry to hear that. There have been problems with the stream. We have been informed that the web TV group has identified the problem and they are fixing it right now. We will inform you as soon as the problem is solved. We are sorry for the inconvenience.
– Nina
Well, 45 minutes now and still no response from kepit.tv webserver… I paid too see Live Jukola, a couple of legs before entering the bed. I have no idea when the problem will be solved or where to find any info about it. I really do hope they can fix the problem soon, but for me Jukola 2018 coachwatching is now over :-)
I have already asked kepit.tv 16€ repaid.
Any updates? almost one hour passed…
Found a back up link at http://vod.new.kepit.tv/jukola2018.html
seems to be dead now
Backup link also died! Unbelievable!
GG
it is also strange that a lot is happening in the forest – with intermediate points and GPS tracking. And the speaker goes on and on and on interviewing a guy about the future of GPS clocks …
Thank you for your kind update on the streaming. Could you please work on getting it to work, instead of writing what you see on your screen?
????
I am subscribing to the WEB TV service. I can only describe what I (cannot) see.
Ok. But could you please just make it work. I’ve paid 16€! Goodnight!
I wish I could … I also paid …
Finally found a live-stream youtube. You can watch by following this back-up link: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kZRCH39XrzI
The youtube works perfectly, but the commentary is bad, and the editing is bad. The commentator isn’t very good at English (excellent vocab, but literally can’t talk, it sounds like he has something in his mouth / having a stroke), is unable to build a story or any excitement, asks the guests quite stupid questions, and is generally bad. The procuder is not prepared for what is happening; they have missed IFK coming through TV controls, put on pre-recorded interviews whilst the chasing groups is coming through TV controls, . This is a very bad production. I don’t know how they think this is worth 16 euros.
Too bad to hear that TV was a disappointment. I’m glad that I decided to sleep instead of watching. 16 EUR seemed way too high price for it. Jukola seems overpriced both for participants and spectators…
I agree Mark. Now a day after, I can actually access a seemingly working recording (did not have time to listen to the full coverage yet), although it is not the same of course now that it is not live. Further problems with the coverage to me:
– Reading for minutes ongoing the list of teams and their runners punching at a control is not value add. In fact quite annoying! Live results website does this for us, there is also on-screen live team list of punching.
– It seems like the commentators are not aware of any voiceovers that is being played/added to the coverage. So we have situations where an interview is played out whilst the commentators are continuing speaking – which means we can’t actually listen to either…
I would rather not even go into the list of things that seems to be missing in the coverage. Certainly nowhere near the quality of the Tiomila coverage this year…
Cannot say anything about the web-TV broadcast, as I ran myself and watched some bits in the normal TV broadcast. BUT I have to completely disagree that the competion is overpriced for participants. The market also disagrees as Jukola keeps growing and growing…
