From Castelcivista in Italy to hilly Danish terrain: Kasper Fosser about 2019 favourites!

mapjwoclongmen (1)

The Norwegian junior Kasper Fosser represented one of the biggest surprises in the 2019-season with his fantastic silver medal at the World Orienteering Championships (WOC) Long distance in Østfold, Norway this summer. In this article you can read about his favourite courses and terrains in the past season.

Fosser has been a very promising runner for many years, dominating at many races at the Junior World Orienteering Championships (JWOC). But although he was among the outsiders at the WOC Long distance, it was still a surprise that only one man could beat him on this day.

This interview is part of the “Course of the Year 2019″ contest organized by World of O. In the introduction article you can suggest YOUR favourite course for “Course of the Year 2019″ – there are prizes to be won worth more than 6000 Euro.

Interview Kasper Fosser

Q: What was the best forest course you run in 2019- and why?

Hard to pick a favorite, but I did like the course at JWOC long distance in Denmark. Lots of challenging route-choices and I think the course-planner did a good job out of a limited terrain.

[Editors comment: Fosser won the JWOC long distance with 3 minutes and 5:30 down to bronze – more about the race here.]

Q: What was the best sprint course you run in 2019 – and why?

Perhaps World Cup sprint in Laufen, i really enjoyed the course there. I also had fun running the knock-out sprint the day before, well done Switzerland.

Q: What was the most interesting orienteering terrain you run in in 2019 – and why?

Castelcivista, a training at MOC camp back in March. Downhill sprint-intervals in a really challenging old-town in Italy, super hilly, small passages, stairs and a very nice view.

Q: What is the most interesting course you ran (or saw) in your own home country in 2019?

I really enjoyed Smaaleneneløpet this spring, in some of Østfolds nicest terrains. I might not be impartial on this one as it was my grandfather (Per Fosser) who planned the courses. The course was an old-fashioned long-distance with lots of long legs and complex routechoices.

Also the long distance at O-festivalen looked really cool, some of the most special type of terrain we have in Norway.

Q: What is the most interesting routechoice leg you remember from 2019? Did you take the right choice?

Leg 10 to 11 at WOC long distance was interesting as so many of the best runners lost a lot of time here.

WOC2019M_11C_12001

I took the best route backing out from nr.10 and going around on road. The last part in the forest also created time-differences, here I lost some time to Lundanes by taking sub-optimal routes.

[Editors comment: Below is an overview of routes from the analysis article at WorldofO.com – see the full analysis of WOC 2019 Long for men for more details and analysis]

Q: Did you set any courses in 2019? If so, is it possible to share the best (in your opinion) with World of O’s readers?

I planned the courses for my clubs “Hemingløpet” this summer, the first and only time I have been a course-planner. Interesting experience, gave me some respect for all the effort that lies behind a good course.

Q: What is the race you look most forward to in 2020?

WOC sprint-relay in Denmark.

Q: What are your goals for next year – and do you plan to change your training and/or focus in order to reach your goals in 2020?

My goals for next year are primarily at WOC, that means sprint is my main focus.

I have made quite a few changes in my training for this, adapting both my mind and body for the faster running on hard surfaces

I have made quite a few changes in my training for this, adapting both my mind and body for the faster running on hard surfaces. The speed will also be handy for the fast Czech forests at WOC 2021.

Q: Have you got any comments about the development of international orienteering?

World Cup in China was an eye-opener for me. I realized just how vulnerable our sport is without our values on fair-play. It is a bit of a dilemma as we want our sport to grow and spread to new countries, but the bigger we get, the harder it is to keep our competitions clean.

Q: Thanks a lot for your answers – and good luck with working towards the coming season!
